Randy Brinson says he "almost fell out of my chair" when he heard that expected Democratic nominee Barack Obama had chosen Zanesville, Ohio, as the setting for a recent speech in which he embraced the concept of using faith-based groups to help carry out government social service efforts.
It wasn't that Zanesville struck Brinson as an odd locale. Quite the opposite. It was that Obama had clearly figured out something that Brinson already knew.
"Zanesville is Ground Zero for conservative evangelicals in Ohio," says Brinson, who, as founder of the voter registration organization "Redeem the Vote," knows a thing or two about where to find conservative Christians. It's a place, he says, that is populated with just the kind of recently reliable Republican voters Obama has tried to woo with a strategy that Brinson and other Christian leaders say they have found remarkable.
"They've researched where the votes are, and they've thrown away the old Democratic playbooks," says Brinson, who is among the evangelical leaders the Obama camp has reached out to. "Instead of just relying on a large number of urban votes, they're going to suburban areas and reaching out to a large number of conservatives." And so are Obama supporters: the religious political action committee Matthew 25 has already aired a pro-Obama ad on Christian radio in Colorado Springs, Colo., home of evangelical leader James Dobson of Focus on the Family, a harsh critic of the Democratic candidate.

Evangelicals who don’t pay much attention if he is in fact making progress with them.
Maybe Brinson, the so-called “leader of Ohio Evangelicals” missed the part that BO is Muslim.
How many of these bullshit articles have we seen already? Expect many, many more from the lying, commie media.
Like Hank Williams Jr. said, they say send your dollars to Jesus and then they give you THEIR address. I’m not into evangelicals. I can see where it would be easy for those people to fall for Obama’s line of bovine scatology.
That’s true - I remember these from back in 2004 - prime time news stories about how even the GOP base was abandoning Bush in Ohio...election night told a different story.
Evangelicals still aren't finding their way to Obama, study finds
Democrats like to say that, this year, they finally will dig into the Republicans traditional advantage among evangelical voters. After all, social conservatives are skeptical of John McCain, and Barack Obama seems so comfortable talking about his faith (at least when his former pastor isnt involved).
But a new analysis from the nonpartisan Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, finds that Obama is doing just as badly among white evangelical voters as his partys 2004 nominee was at this point.
The report, based on a national Pew poll conducted last month, found that just 25% of white evangelicals support Obama, compared to the 26% who said they backed John F. Kerrys candidacy in the summer of 2004. (Kerry wound up winning just 21% of that group, according to exit polls.)

Oh good grief. I can’t believe anyone that would call themselves Evangelical would even give Obama the time of day.
Yawn. mmmmhmmm.
If this is true, what the heck is wrong with the Evangelicals? Come on guys, we need you as an anchor to keep America from becoming a socialist European country!
crystal meth-odists?
I'm no evangelical, but I can't see the evangelicals I know supporting that.
Eh
You can file this into the “Long time Republican voting for Obama” media narrative file.
Probably former Huckabee supporters.
Nothing against Evangelicals, or Blacks, or Evangelical Blacks, but I am so tired of the “key words” that the media throws out there concerning the election... I am tired of their use of Evangelical, Black, White, Mormon, etc. The one thing the media seems to of avoided this election is dividing this country into the haves and the havenots.
2Thesalonians 2:11: And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie
2Thesalonians 2:12: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness
Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works?
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.
1st Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Liberals and the MSM just do not seem to understand that to real evangelical Christian the words, Abortion and Sam Sex Marriage go together with Satan and the Devil.
To libs like Obama, the words Christian, Bible, Jesus and God are “JUST WORDS”.
I wonder how many of them know Obama’s church had a gay choir director who was also an elementary school teacher and was murdered?
Another story we can call B.S. on. Another “I used to support the GOP until they blah, blah, blah...” canard. The MSM doesn’t like to publish articles showing Dem voters willing to vote for McCain. Don’t want to look too balanced and fair.
Yep, last time it was some “pastor”. When I did a simple google search the woman was not a pastor, or even an associate pastor, at the place she claimed she was from. She apparently had been shuffled around from one place to another before being demoted to youth directer.
Back in April 2006:
"Three years ago, Randy Brinson would have been the first to tell you that he was an unlikely political player and an even less likely Democratic collaborator."
"If being a player in this world meant calling for the heads of moderate Republicans and ginning up fake controversies like a supposed "war on Christmas," Brinson wasn't terribly interested."
"In quick succession, the lifelong Republican found himself meeting with advisors to the incoming Democratic leadersRep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.)field directors at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and aides to Howard Dean at the Democratic National Committee. " "Randy Brinson is proof that some evangelicals are willing to take their chances and cross over to see what Democrats have to offer. "
So 2 years later he once again is a...life long republican who is leaving the GOP.
I'm guessing in 2010 he will still be a lifelong republican who....can you guess? Is leaving the GOP.
Relax, this is U.S. socialist News and communist
report.
They must poll black evagelicals. Their support is a given.
No news here, move along.
I instinctively knew something was crooked about this article without even reading the details or researching this ‘evangelical’ feller. Many times have I looked deeper into this type of article and found it to be a ruse.
Thanks for proving my instincts correct. It is incredible that the MSM continues to follow this same old marxist tactics year after year after year.
Yeah....and some people profess NOT to understand why the MSM is going out of business.....
I believe Hank was referring to the TV evangelists...not evangelicals. Evangelicals are, in very simple terms. Christians who believe in a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus. True evangelicals will not vote for Obama because of his position on abortion.
How can this be???? This has to be psyops. How can evangelicals support a guy who opposed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act (who blocked the Induced Infant Liability Act in Ill.) that would protect babies that SURVIVE late term abortion — babies with a heart beat and breathing on their own but were somehow included in the “abortion rights” of the Freedom of Choice Act that BHO supports? This guy’s a murderer.
This is really a terminology or semantics issue. And a campaign strategy.
The cultural populists have been in the GOP for 40 plus years. The cultural populists are sometimes called cultural conservatives or social conservatives, but, for them, cultural issues are important. The sub-groups are religious culture, rural culture, southern culture, gun culture, etc.
OTOH, the economic populists are a democratic constituency. The sub-groups are blue collar, union, social justice/welfare, environmental justice, etc.
The dems recognize the bonds between the cultural populists and the GOP are strained and are trying to bring them back into the democratic party. And they have had some success.
The strategy, especially with the religious right, is to appeal to their sense of social justice, fair wages(living wages), and caring about the environment.
The dems are trying to unite the cultural and economic populists as democratic moral populists.
LOL. Another wishful-thinking article from the liberal media. They must really be getting close to panic mode with Barry O to be trotting out this garbage so early.
Oh sure barack mcgovern is making “progress” with Evangelicals - riiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!!!
There are a few posters who like to use articles like this (or any other excuse they can find) to bash evangelicals for being stupid, ignorant, easily deceived, etc.
All I can say is, in the evangelical circles I frequent, I don’t know ANYBODY that will vote for Obama.
As with any religious group, there are a bunch of EINABO’s out there ... Evangelical in Name and Background Only.
This is the biggest jug of kool aid the leftist media has servred up yet. Christians don’t vote democratic. A vote
for a democrat is the same as killing babies and promoting
homosexuality. No way around it.
Every single one of these evangelicals are going to be in shock when the breath of Obama’s past liberalism is finally brought to light in September-October.
He’ll make progress with this evangelical when he stops supporting baby killing, and gives back all his Planned Parenthood donations to prove it.
Not before.
Corrupt preachers/ministers/priests are a scourge of every denomination. Jesus Himself warned of them, telling in Matthew 7:15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
They are not a defining characteristic of evangelicals, nor are evangelicals dumber than other believers.
Rather, I would say we are more literal than some Christians so that when Jesus says:
Matthew 28:18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
we try to do that.
That's what an evangelical is.
