LONDON There was a time, not all that long ago, when he was the invisible man whose name was a battle cry, his appearance known to most people only from an out-of-date photograph, a hidden hero on a prison island off the coast of Africa.
But as he celebrated his 90th birthday Friday, Nelson Mandela was anything but invisible, a figure of reverence whose nine decades have been marked and observed at a huge rock concert in Londons Hyde Park, a gala dinner for his childrens charity in the august, chandeliered Long Room at Lords cricket ground and a host of tributes.
His birthday Friday was supposed to be a quiet affair in his ancestral village of Qunu in the southeast of his country with a mere 500 of his closest friends in attendance, and a wry self-deprecation.
We are honored that you wish to celebrate the birthday of a retired old man, who no longer has power or influence, he said in a public radio message, according to news reports.

Mandela and Castro, two nasty old commie farts and dictators.
I agree and look at South Africa (Zimbabwe) now. Electing Obuma will lead to the possible demise of the USA, as it did to a once rich/prosperous South Africa.

“Necklacing.”
Q: Are South Africans better off or worse off now that the crony-Marxists called the ANC are in charge?
Pardon me whilst I refrain from throwing a party in his honor.
Yes sir! Another fine example of morons worshiping socialist scum.
South Africa is a hell on earth. And I could not care less.
Did I only dream it or was there a time when the evening news included the closing numbers on the South African stock market and the rand? Nah, I must’ve dreamt it.
I guess it’s true what they say about only the good dying young. 90? How many never got to see 19 because of Mandela’s thugs?
Boy, is that true. On the one hand you have Tony Snow, 53, dies so young and so full of promise. On the other hand, you have Mandela, a communist, disgusting individual and he is still kicking at 90. Life definitely is not fair.
They should NEVER have let that Marxist out of jail.
The libs love him and Mandela is the pure embodiment of corruption and everything we don’t want.
(Is the evil b*t*h still alive? Oh well, I really don't give a sheet.)
To those who have said that John McCain’s POW tenure disqualifies, or does not alone qualify, him for the office of the Presidency ...
... would they say the same of Nelson Mandela’s political prisoner status?
H
When was Mandela a dictator?
Who cares?
No one is required to, I suppose — I simply thought it was interesting to note the double standard from the left.
H
He’s a PC cultural icon dictator to the left.
The specifics of his governmental service or non service don’t really matter.
He’s still just another lefty commie do badder. He’s like Obammy, style with no substance at all. Just more leftist baloney.
He’s also like Obammy in that he has not actually done much of anything of substance except spend a long time in prison. He’s like Al Gore who “won” a Nobel Prize for pretty much nothing except more leftist narcissism and self congratulating smug hubris.
Anything else you’d like to know?
Thank you and good for you.
“Liberals” are the most faux naif and bone headed, self-righteous narcissists on the planet. Completely detached from reality.
Yes, so when you say he was a dictator it wasn't true but that did not matter to you? That is what I find interesting about this forum anyone can say anything with little regard for reality.
“Yes, so when you say he was a dictator it wasn’t true but that did not matter to you? “.
I don’t think Mandela’s election is really the salient point about him. I still think he’s a communist, leftist, fascist, black racist or whatever you want to call him elected or not. He’s just another commie wolf in faux sheeps clothing.
South Africa is a mess and it’s going to get worse, not better. It’s going to be like Zimbabwe. I have friends that just returned from there and they said that most white people don’t go anywhere with guns or guards. You’re lucky not to get killed in Jo’burg.
It would be nice if some African country would actually elect a capitalist and democratic president, not just another socialist/communist thug.
And furthermore,........
” That is what I find interesting about this forum anyone can say anything with little regard for reality.”
You mean like on all the “Democratic” forums, like the DU, Daily Koz and Huffington Post?
Well the ANC violently crushed all opposition and essentially became the state.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COMRADE!

Exactly.
