Maybe 25 years ago, but not these days. Especially for a vice-presidential choice.
Abortion is still a major national issue for each parties base voter. I don’t expect Obama to buck his liberal pro-abortion base and choose Hagel as his running mate. He’d lose significant support among Democrats. And I seriously doubt McCain is foolish enough to buck the GOP`s conservative base on the abortion issue. Especially these days! Most conservatives will not accept anyone less than a pro-life running mate.
