Are we talking about gasoline or natural gas?

China was smart enough to reject British Opium; and yet China appears to be stupid enough to get itself hooked on BP Oil.

A little collaborative effort between the Empires, perhaps?

If the Chinese people think they are slaves now, wait until their life revolves around feeding an idol called an “Automobile”.

Tyranny of the appetite.

It’s a pretty narrow statistic. Check the article.

Interesting. Assuming that the number is right, California should pull down well over 8 billion dollars in gasoline/diesel taxes, yet the actual number is 4.4 billion.

So, either the draconian state sales tax system somehow missed picking up over 3.6 billion dollars, or the numbers provided in the article are a gross exaggeration once again. It wouldn’t shock me, however, if they’re counting /produced/ gallons, which would include all the gasoline sent out of state via our pipelines.

California is an interesting state. I believe it is the 8th largest country in the world by several measures. They enjoy a laid back life style. However, they want to do so using others resources. Think water. Think electricity. Where do you suppose the refineries are located that made that gasoline. I will lay a dollar to a doughnut that they are out of state. Don’t put that smelly plant (which also might pollute) in my back yard, but continue to sell me the gas.

Ask the question when the last dam was built it California so they could have more water? We will bring the water in from out of state where they can have the unsightly dam. etc. etc. etc.

"Amazing Stat: California Uses More Gas than China"

Really?

Should read China is now consuming almost as much oil as the State of California.

Now just how do you suppose you greedy Americans are supposed to feel about that?

Better get ready for the caves, and eating a diet of bugs and berries, because that's where we are headed unless we all don't wake up.

One of the foundational elements of American economic growth was cheap oil, from a time when the US was the Saudi Arabia of oil. It’s going to be rough going for India and China to growth rapidly with oil at $140 a barrel, let alone $500. My feeling is that coal gasification is about to become a growth industry.

Good thing you're not a high roller, 'cuz that's a bet you'd loose.

Avon. Martinez. Point Richmond. Wilmington. Long Beach. We've got it goin' on, out here. Big time.

California refineries run at or near capacity 24/7/365, and then you throw into that mix the fact that our we-know-better state government idiots have mandated that California have its very own "boutique" gasoline formulations...I'm not even sure we CAN bring gasoline in from out-of-state; even if we NEEDED to.

IIRC, the Law in California is -- or was, at least -- so tight that so-called "California spec" gasoline couldn't even be made at a facility that didn't supply it exclusively. So, refineries in Houston, for instance, couldn't go to bat for California if one of our own facilities went off-line for some reason. Consequently, we pay more, and if a California refinery DOES go down, we face our own custom-made supply crunch, which -- naturally -- drives local prices even higher.

If the other 47 of the Contiguous 48 States knew what was best for them, they'd make the importation of California liberals a felonious crime punishable by death.

We've got lots of refineries here in the SF Bay Area. However, we have always had the highest gas prices in the nation. The gas gets shipped elsewhere where it is priced cheaper than what we pay in SF just across the bay from the refineries. Our water also comes from here (at least in the north, LA is another thing in the south).

The claim by this article can’t possibly be true. China consumes 8 million barrels of oil per day and the US 20 million per day. Unless California consumes nearly half of the US oil conumption, I really doubt the legitimacy of the statistics put forth by this article.

Yeah, I meant our SF water comes from Hetch Hetchy, locally in California. While LA gets it from multiple sources including out of state. If environmentalists are successful in converting Hetch Hetchy to it’s original native state, we could end up buying bottled water along with our oil from the arabs. I hate anti-growth environmentalist libs.

Or not. They can afford to arm 300,000,000 people with AK's and march them all the way to Iran, without losing much of their national productivity.

There is a huge refinery near Long Beach and a Nuclear Plant near Camp Pendelton. This is the home state of Nixon and Reagan... though I agree its getting a bit kooky, it is my home state and I won’t surrender just yet.

True, but still it just seems rather stupid to deliberately create an economy based upon oil when the production numbers are declining (peak oil) - and there are alternative energy sources available. How many nuclear plants have the Chinese built?

And the wisdom of addicting folks to millions of Automo-Idols, having witnessed the challenges our oil addiction has created here in the U.S. seems especially suspect.

The Chinese may discover why Envy is one of the seven deadly sins. Too bad for them they can only steal and mimic the innovations that were made possible by Freedom in the west.

I sometimes wonder if the Communist Chinese aren’t a proxy in a game of Good Empire / Bad Empire; pawns who will, in the end, succumb to the tyranny of their own appetites.
