Paterson's Paranoia (Gov. David Paterson plays race card)
nypost.com ^ | July 18, 2008

Posted on 07/19/2008 4:06:03 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

I am known as New York's accidental governor.

I would like to point out a couple of facts. The two adjoining states to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, have had three government changes in the last five years. None of those people were called the accidental governor. ... Nobody called Teddy Roosevelt an accidental president. Nobody called Truman an accidental president. And nobody called LBJ an accidental anything.

So why was this non-illustrious title held all of these years for me?

I will leave the answer to all of you and the Freudians in the audience because I haven't had the chance to think about it.

-- Governor Paterson, address to the NAACP, July 17, 2008

Indeed, Mr. Paterson must not have had a chance to think about it. If he had, a person of his intelligence would have realized that rather than reserving the title of accidental governor for an African American, as was Mr. Paterson's clear implication, Americans have used the term widely to apply to politicians who took office when misfortune befell their predecessors. A quick check of Amazon.com — maybe Mr. Paterson just sees the Web site as a cow to milk for sales tax revenues rather than as a source of useful information — discloses that entire books have been written naming no less than four white Americans as accidental presidents.

The first of them was Robert Sherrill's 1967 book about Lyndon Johnson, "The Accidental President," putting the lie to Mr. Paterson's claim that "nobody called LBJ an accidental anything." There is a 2001 book about President Bush titled "The Accidental President: How 413 Lawyers, 9 Supreme Court Justices, and 5,963,110 Floridians (Give or Take a Few) Landed George W. Bush in the White House."

I’ve never seen a man so blind as Paterson: legally blind, morally blind, mentally blind.

An amazing triumph of governmental evolution.

Paterson has worn out his welcome with me. That he ever had one from me is saying a lot for a dem. But it’s gone.

His comments about if Obama is not elected President are racist.

Codey was called ACTING Governor after the gay governor resigned.

Would dufus rather be called ACTING Governor?

The stupidity of this man is astounding. He was shameless in announcing his numerous extra marital affairs which appear to be continuing.

Doesn't matter. Facts cannot be allowed to intrude on a minority person's perception of racism. In fact, even the act of disputing a claim of racism is in itself racist.

Haven’t seen any women play “The Chick Card” under these same circumstances when confronted with criticism, which I’m SURE they encountered, starting all the way back in 1917, when women were still considered chattel...

“Of the 203 women who have served in the House, 36 were elected to fill vacancies caused by the death of their husbands. Fifteen of the 36 were subsequently elected to additional terms.”

i remember that.

he did what most people would do:

he had extrra-marital affairs, as did his wife,

so, he came clean.

what could he do? wait and hope it would go away. not.

the question is, why do so many people in public life have so many similar problems?

It might be a pipe dream at this point but I really hope the GOP is able to hold onto the Senate. We’ve got two more years until the governor’s up for re-election and I can’t begin to think of the damage that can be done during that time with a one-party state.

He was an accident because no one thought Spitzer would ever go anywhere, or fall so fast. Here in CT, and in NJ, Rowland and McGreevey’s corruption was known for a while, as I recall.

NJ has had two changes of government? Corzine was elected in 2005. No one has called him an accidental governor because there was no reason to! Jodi Rell became gov. in CT in 2004 and somewhere along the way, someone must have called her “accidental.” There were plenty of articles and editorials talking about how this obscure state rep. moved up to be lieutenant governor, then took over the top spot when her predecessor resigned in disgrace. Sounds like Paterson is just a big whiner and wants to keep racial divisions going as most Demos do.

The NY GOP better get it’s act together. Spitzer and Hevesi gave us a give we could not have planned any better. Two power hungry lefties get tossed after an election for ethics. The NY GOP better thank their lucky stars that happened. They need to start grooming the next governor now, not months before the next election.

You know it’s just amazing that there are any black governors, senators, congressmen, mayors, etc. anywhere at all considering how obviously racist everyone in this country apparently is. /s

On a serious note, any person who has managed to attain such a high and powerful position as governor, mayor, senator, or presidential nominee yet still thinks that he is being somehow personally discriminated against needs to quit stealing the public’s money and resign because he is obviously either too incompetent or too paranoid to hold office.

She’s young and pretty and her position on his staff has raised questions that have of course, gone unanswered.

Only those with no ability to do the job will rely on "woe is me" victimization tactics to pat themselves on the back.

People don't want to hear excuses from our elected - or "accidental" - leaders...we want results.

If we wanted to hear the whiny, "woe is me I'm black" routine we could just turn on the local news on any given day and get an earful.

It is far and few between to find a black official who doesn't use his color as an excuse, or as a crutch, to justify the job s/he is doing. MLK said it was the "content of character" that matters, but obviously that message has only been drilled into the heads of those who are NOT racists.

Patterson, either you can do the job, or you can't...it's that simple. If you spend the hours in office making every comment about you into some racial oriented gaff, like being called an "accidental governor", then you're ignoring affairs of state (oops...maybe I shouldn't use the word "affairs" in the same sentence with "Patterson") instead of being so thin-skinned.

Or, in short, GROW THE HELL UP...lead, follow, or get out of the way.

As for the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut, our search found dozens of stories describing the Garden State's Governor Codey as an accidental governor. A January 11, 2006, editorial in the Star-Ledger of Newark began: "Richard Codey is often called the accidental governor because he was in the right place — the Senate president's office — when former Gov. James McGreevey stunned the state and nation by announcing he was resigning because he had an extramarital affair with a man."

I guess you didn't bother to read the story.

if his predecessor hadn’t been caught in his relationship with a man, corzine wouldn’t be there. now, if that’s not an accident?

to the point, some people don’t like a blind, unattractive black governor.

that’s the real issue.

and, like other politicians today, he’s had his extra-marital affairs too; so he’s not defensible.

you and others want a hollywood attractive white male in the office.

and, indeed that’s the message of television. the public expects attractive men and women in the public domain.

i have a different view than you.

people would not be calling him the accidental governor if he looked like tiger woods.

get it?

tiger is telegenic and pleasing to the television palate. ladies eat him up.

in contrast, the governor of new york is an ugly black guy. in fact, he looks unshaven in some photos. he suffers the same persona as dick nixon.

he does not appeal to television ladies.

so, they wonder, what right does that gross, ugly unkempt black guy got to be governor? and why is he in my face on my tv?
