The White House this afternoon accidentally sent to its extensive distribution list a Reuters story headlined "Iraqi PM backs Obama troop exit plan - magazine."
The story relayed how Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told the German magazine Der Spiegel that "he supported prospective U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,'" the prime minister said.
The White House employee had intended to send the article to an internal distribution list, ABC News' Martha Raddatz reports, but hit the wrong button......"

I don't believe that. Why wouldn't something like this happen on a less sensitive item? The McClellan factor is working here.
I call B.S. on the “accident”.
“I don’t believe that. Why wouldn’t something like this happen on a less sensitive item? The McClellan factor is working here. “
I was thinking much the same thing. I smell a rat.
This would not happen on that level, the people pushing such, “buttons” would be better than that and there would be safeguards on sensitive information.
My guess would be that the WH KNEW what Maliki really said and had expected Der Speigel to report it correctly, instead Der Speigel MISPRESENTED, MISINTERPRETED and MISREPORTED the facts. Should NOT surprise anyone.
German newspapers (as has been posted here) view Obama as the next JFK.
And the sand rats we helped will stab us in the back the way Maliki stabbed Bush in the back.
Fine - pull them ALL out - NOW. Let the sand rats deal with insurgents on their own.
Bush’s incompetence in delaing with these people has been astronomic.
I’m not sure I believe the story the way it’s written...Sounds more like they picked up on what WAS already printed...
Oh yeah, there are more than 1 “send” button on your email...riiiight...
Ok. Yea. Right. I've been seeing Bush enemies dangling all over the place for almost eight years. Bush knows how to beat his foes. I am in awe. Go Conservatives !!!!!!!!!

Statement by the Press Secretary on Iraq
White House News
In Focus: Iraq
President Bush and Prime Minister Maliki spoke yesterday in their regularly scheduled secure video conference, about a range of matters including the improving security situation and the performance of Iraqi Security Forces across Iraq, from Basra, to Maysan, Baghdad and Sadr City, and Mosul. The two leaders welcomed the recent visit of Prime Minister Erdogan to Baghdad and the successful visit of Prime Minister Maliki to the UAE. They also discussed ongoing initiatives to follow security gains with Iraqi investment in its people, infrastructure, cities, and towns, which will be aided by a $21 billion supplemental budget now before the Iraqi parliament.
In the context of these improving political, economic, and security conditions, the President and the Prime Minister discussed the ongoing negotiations to establish a normalized bilateral relationship between Iraq and the United States. The leaders agreed on a common way forward to conclude these negotiations as soon as possible, and noted in particular the progress made toward completing a broad strategic framework agreement that will build on the Declaration of Principles signed last November, and include areas of cooperation across many fields, including economics, diplomacy, health, culture, education, and security.
In the area of security cooperation, the President and the Prime Minister agreed that improving conditions should allow for the agreements now under negotiation to include a general time horizon for meeting aspirational goals — such as the resumption of Iraqi security control in their cities and provinces and the further reduction of U.S. combat forces from Iraq. The President and Prime Minister agreed that the goals would be based on continued improving conditions on the ground and not an arbitrary date for withdrawal. The two leaders welcomed in this regard the return of the final surge brigade to the United States this month, and the ongoing transition from a primary combat role for U.S. forces to an overwatch role, which focuses on training and advising Iraqi forces, and conducting counter-terror operations in support of those forces.
This transition and the subsequent reduction in U.S. forces from Iraq is a testament to the improving capacity of Iraq’s Security Forces and the success of joint operations that were initiated under the new strategy put in place by the President and the Prime Minister in January 2007.

To the very end, this White House staff continues to display the disloyalty and/or incompetence that has plagued it’s efforts to keep America informed and motivated on the Iraq War since day one.
LOL... Everyone misses the point....
THE SURGE WORKED....
The idiots on the left can’s have it both ways they were for Retreat before they were for Victory. They were against the surge... therefore any point they make on removing troops at this point is moot... Obviously troops had every intention of drawing down when Al-Qiada was no longer a threat....
Too bad most of America gets duped by the rats into thinking that this was all part of “THEIR PLAN”....
From a friend of a friend...Please refer to Obama as Junior!!!!
His campaign hates it!!!!
The McClellan Factor. That’s it.
As for PM Maliki’s sentiment, I tell you: when all is said and done, Muslims do and will support each other at the end of the day.
Dick Dastardly: new White House Communication Adviser
jeez
BS meter, somebody?????????????????
This bitch is a democrat plant. The Bush administration continues to be excellent at hiring plants, and traitors.
“From a friend of a friend...Please refer to Obama as Junior!!!!”
Please thank your friend and let me know where I can send some sort of restaurant gift certificate. this is action that deserves rewarding!!! Real American!!!!!!

Wrong button = wrong groupmail in the address line?
Presumably the PR guys have address books for the people they normally send emails to, and groups of various kinds as well, such as media or staff.
And you would hope they would have groups for friends and foes in the media, but the Bush administration mostly seems too stupid to tell the difference.
It was a stupid thing to do, or possibly it was malicious mischief. But at least it was nothing but redistributing an article already in the public domain, and probably full of lies, not the release of confidential information or a direct communication from Maliki.
Obama operative on the inside. The news traveled at the speed of the internet. I really hope there will be some real "Dorky" pictures of Hussein on his trip.
I know a nice young lady from Germany and I was not happy with some of her comments about Bush and McCain (how he is just like Bush, etc.). I told her he wasn’t anything like Bush because he votes against him most of the time. She smugly said he didn’t. I smugly told her that I LIVED HERE and knew the difference. Cheez.
No one could be this stupid. I’ll only believe this if someone gets fired for what would be a truly stupid blunder. There must be some reason that they wanted this information to be publicized.
Fixed it... '-}
Good “/sarc”
{Im not sure I believe the story the way its written...Sounds more like they picked up on what WAS already printed}
I agree.
Sacajaweau, BTW, ever been to the Patagonia?
I don’t get why this is an issue, but it keeps coming up. Are all the reporters so stupid they couldn’t watch the wires for a Reuter’s story, and therefore didn’t know about it until the White House e-mailed it?
I agree.
It sounds like Maliki is now disowning the German intrepretation of his remarks.
Nothing like this happens in a vacuum. If the White House released it, it is because, in quoting someone else, it could turn out to be untrue. Just watch.
Another MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
And today's news...Iraqi PM disputes report on withdrawal plan
