Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) - For "reasons of safety", bars are forbidden to serve "blacks"" and Mongolians or place tables in the street. Street musicians are being banned, and so is buying medicines containing "stimulants" without a prescription. Prohibitions are on the rise for the Olympic capital, while the first leaks reveal a grandiose fireworks display for the inauguration.
Bar owners around the Workers' Stadium in downtown Beijing say that public security officials are telling them not to let in "blacks" and Mongolians, and many of them have even had to sign a pledge. The official reason is the fight against drugs and prostitution, dominated in the past by Mongolians and persons of colour. Moreover, public places must close by 2 a.m., for security reasons, and the bar owners are being asked to remind their clients that they must always have an identification document with them. There is even doubt over whether the bars within a radius of two kilometres from the Olympic buildings will be able operate, or whether they will have to shut down for the entire period. In some areas, tables are not permitted outside, because "the presence of too many foreigners gathered outside could create problems". There is also an attempt to shut down outdoor musical concerts, to prevent disorder.

Admittedly, I didnt read the whole article..but if this is true, I think the entire world should boycott the Olympics.

The line about “The presence of too many foreigners gathered outside” could be a problem: They may have Capitalism 101 mastered better than our own Presidents, but I don’t think the Chinese quite understand what an Olympics entails.
For a couple of weeks, they are going to have “foreigners” running out their ears, their institutionally paranoid security forces will be operating at “incoming threat” overload levels conducive to nervous breakdowns, and God forbid, a LOT of these furriners will actually communicate one-on-one with native Chinese.
Hypothetical: What will the Chinese do when a few thousand Europeans decide to hold a “moment-of-silence” sit-in at Tienanmem Square, with a sprinkling of “Free Darfur/Tibet/Whomever signs? Physically blockade or water-cannon them? Arrest, beat and deport them? And then hope that Sarkozy will show up for closing ceremonies and shut up about it? Sarkozy’s wife, mistress and voters can’t shut him up, what are the Chinese going to do, arrest him?!
By all means, let the Games begin! China, with a controlled press, has limited experience with the fine art of “spin”, which is so old here, we would understand it as such anyway.
I guess I understand their desire for “prestige”, but I think the Chinese have gone “a bridge too far” at this point. Let the average Chinese see too many Rolexes on the wrists of fat and happy tourists, and the new growth industry in China will be the “sharpening pitchforks and fueling (non-Olympic) torches” concession stands.
Of such perceptions are revolutions made. Not that he would have, but I don’t think Tony Snow as their hired spokesperson could have spun what will happen in a positive light.
You ordered it, China, now eat your breakfast. One positive: the fireworks, literal not political, should be the best ever seen anywhere. As a big fan of this most ephemeral of art-forms, that I really look forward to.
If you haven’t heard. Shirley Temple Black is still with us and seems to be conservative.

I’ve got a couple of people in Qingdao and Shenzhen and they say they haven’t heard anything like that.
If it is true, it is not alarming. C’mon racism against blacks is nothing new. When my dad went to study in Britain in the 1960’s there were Landlords putting up signs saying “No Dogs, No Irish, No Blacks”. My Dad and his colleagues learned to ignore that nonsense.
If the Chinese want to be racist against blacks - that would be extremely stupid. There are thousands of them in Africa - and we could VERY EASILY substitute them with Indians.
The feedback I get from Africans who live in China (mainly business people) is that Chinese are neither more nor less racist than most people (they are definitely less racist than the Japanese). They are more interested in business and have little time for anything else.
A Shirley Temple is just a 7-Up with some grenadine and a cherry in it.
