MEXICO CITY - MEXICO has awarded US Democratic Sen Edward Kennedy the country's highest honour for his work defending the rights of immigrants during his decades in Congress.
The Mexican government said in its official gazette it presented the 'Aztec Eagle' honour to Mr Kennedy in Washington on Friday.
'He has denounced injustices suffered by immigrants,' and 'promoted initiatives to promote full political participation and increased access to health and education services for the Mexican-American community,' the official announcement said.
The veteran Massachusetts senator fought for an immigration reform bill in the US Congress that failed to pass last year.
Mr Kennedy has been a vocal critic of Republican President George W. Bush and actively campaigned for Mr Barack Obama in his bid to become the Democratic nominee in the November presidential election.
Mr Kennedy, 76, was hospitalised in June for brain surgery to remove a tumour but showed up in Congress this month to vote on a Medicare bill opposed by the White House.
Last year Mexico presented Bill and Melinda Gates with the same honour for the philanthropic work of the Microsoft Corp co-founder and his wife in Mexico where they have donated computers for schools and promoted public health programmes.

Gee, I always thought most Mexicans thought the highest honor was a green card from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I guess the government of Mexico must have issued Kennedy a counterfeit green card.

Ted, whose “hands are red because of the babies whose blood he’s shed,” made massive immigration more necesary to gain more funds, to replace those who normally would have been born but were aborted, many times because couple felt it would reduce their standard of living.
But be assured, when he dies his church will give a grand funeral, replete with the adulation of multitudes, few if any of which will tell the truth of his eternal horror, which await an unrepentant, immoral, so-called Christian.
