Nine face stoning death in Iran
BBC News ^ | July 19, 2008

At least eight women and one man are reported to have been sentenced to death by stoning in Iran.

The group, convicted of adultery and sex offences, could be executed at any time, lawyers defending them say.

The lawyers have called on the head of Iran's judiciary to prevent the sentences from being carried out.

The last officially reported stoning in Iran last year drew strong criticism from human rights groups and the European Union.

The eight women sentenced, whose ages range from 27 to 43, had convictions including prostitution, incest and adultery, Reuters news agency reported.

The man, a 50-year-old music teacher, was convicted of illegal sex with a student, reports said.

Moratorium imposed

Under Iran's Islamic law, stoning to death is the punishment for the crime of adultery.

In 2002 Iranian judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi imposed a moratorium on stoning, but at least three people are reported to have been executed by stoning since then.

Shadi Sadr from the Volunteer Lawyers' Network, which is representing the women, said: "We are very worried as there are at least eight women and one man with a definitive verdict which can be carried out any moment.

"There are no guarantees that the punishments will be halted or commuted."

She called on the international community to back their efforts, adding: "We are in close touch with human rights organisations and many of them have supported our campaign."

Fellow defence lawyer Mariam Kian-Arsi said: "Our specific and clear demand is to have the stoning sentence stopped by Ayatollah Shahroudi since the defendants are liable to be stoned at any moment."

Women 'poorly represented'

In theory the penalty of stoning to death applies to both men and women.

But the lawyers say that in practice, many more women than men receive the sentence because they are less well educated and often poorly represented in court.

Human rights group Amnesty International earlier this year called on Iran to abolish "this grotesque punishment" and said many facing execution by stoning were sentenced after unfair trials.

Under Iran's strict penal code, men convicted of adultery should be buried up to their waists and women up to their chests for stoning. The stones used should not be large enough to kill the person immediately.

In islam there is no “He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone”.

They seem to get a thrill killing by any means possible.

Perhaps they should follow Obamas advice and just talk to the judge more.

Prostitution = 1 woman x many men. Somehow these numbers don’t add up. Adultery = 1 woman + 1 man, and these numbers still don’t add up. If you are going to use these laws, at least be just about it. That’s what makes them work. When those in power abuse or distort the laws, and they all do, that’s when they need to be thrown out. No one lives up to their own rules. That’s why Jesus had to die. Sermon for the day.

Where are the liberals who flag this leader as a hero? Where are the outcry for justice? We can’t put to death a man who is a horrible menace to society and convicted of murder in a humane way, but it’s perfectly ok to cruelly torture a person to death for a sex crime?

Hell, Bill Clinton would be stoned to death in that country. Has anyone considered that?

My guess is that one man had raped eight women and there’s probably something in islamic law about all of them having to die if the guy gets caught.

Shari Law isn't based on common law or natural law like Western legal civilization jurisprudence, so justice is not the underling premise

It's based on the babbling of a sixth century stark raving madman who a married a six year and then at nine year old had sexual relationships with her, so what makes you think Islamic laws are fair, just and work in dealing with sexual crimes and women ?

Somehow these numbers don’t add up.

That's because the women native to Iran are particularly misbehaved. The men are forced to throw rocks at them, cut their heads off, shoot them and, in order to preserve the family honor, once in a while a father has to stab a daughter to death.

You would think they would try to get these b*tches to behave by putting a bag over their heads - or something.

I don’t get it. Why would you have illicit sex with just one person and get stoned to death when you can blow yourself up in a shopping center killing several dozen innocent people and then get laid by 72 virgins?

Ann Coulter is right. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.

You mean there are contradictions in the Koran? Is their form of stoning any different than Biblical O.T. stoning? (serious question)

Hey Free, those muzzies migrate to the United States and kill their women just like they do in the arab lands. One fellow just strangled his daughter in FL and another, somewhere in the NE, with the help of his brother killed his daughter for dating the wrong fellow, then buried her under the front steps. They do it there and in this country too. What are we to say???
Have you read about the mosque in the Hq bldg at FT Bragg? Returning soldiers, from Iraq and Afphaganistan must pass this room when they sign back into base. How’s that for a slap in the face?

There was a lot of appreciation here when they executed a guy who had killed several children. They hung him from a construction crane in front of a large crowd. Some of the victims’ family members “managed” to break through and assault the guy (one stabbing IIRC) before they hung him.

A ground-breaking, feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Antony Thomas, The Qur’an asks what Islam’s holiest book actually says about issues such as equality, punishment, peace, relations with other faiths and suicide bombing.

The world’s one billion Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the word of God, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad nearly 1,500 years ago. From women’s rights to freedom of speech, and from punishment to forgiveness, it touches on all aspects of life. Yet this one volume, often seen as a unified code for living, includes a huge array of attitudes.

When you can cite for me the last time someone was stoned for criminal offenses based on Biblical O.T. law?

When you do, I'd be glad to answer your strawman question

What about that Mexican murderer AI and the world court was trying to keep from being executed in Texas?

Did the killer fry yet?

Hey, the Quran consists of whatever happened to occur to Muhammed on any given day. And as he couldn’t read in order to remind himself of what he, er, that is Allah, had said the previous week, there are contradictions galore. The only things that didn’t change are the first principles...the reasons for the creation of Islam. And those are, kill anybody who disagrees with you and steal his stuff. After all, how many followers do you think Mohammed, er, Allah would have had if you had to pray 14 hours a day and take a vow of poverty??!!

None that I know of since hundreds of years before islam was invented.
(Serious answer).

Your point?

The last sixteen hundred years aren't recent enough for you?

Okay, so they’re not all bad, although the punishment seems too lenient.

Boy, you guys are touchy! I just love theology and am a little familiar with the Bible, but have never read the koran. You are all posting about it, so I was hoping I could get some insight into the book without having to read it because of my paranoia about translation. Thanks anyway.

Qur’an is written like a big circular rhythmic poem. It sounds good in Arabic, sounds like crap translated. It’s meant to be read out loud.
