There seems to be a kumbaya moment occurring on the conservative front, and it’s one that would apply a salve to Senator John McCain’s uneven, unsettled relationship with the religious right.
Enter James Dobson, who has at times been blistering in his criticisms of Mr. McCain. The religious right’s more favored candidates — from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to even former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson — are no longer options.

Thank you, Obama.
Dobson is getting a good look at Obama.
Anything else would be VERY stupid on Dobson’s part.
That was an excelent radio show when they took on line-by-line what Obama said about the Bible.
I can’t stand McCain. I am voting against Obama AKA Jimmy Carter jr.
Obama has the ability to make McCain look like a favorable choice.
Don’t do it, Dr. Dobson.
The lesser of two evils is still evil. Don’t harm your stature by endorsing evil.
Don't sugar coat it.
I love this. Dobson may flip flop.
He must be very concerned that he won't have a place at the table if he doesn't get on board.
Frankly, I believe McCain has already written him off and doesn't want or need him.
Dobson must be getting scared of being left out.
Nothing like a guy who has rock solid core values and stays true to his word.
Reality was bound to set in sooner or later...
Kerry was a BAD choice for America. Obama is a DANGEROUS choice.
If Dobson had endorsed Thompson at the critical moment, he wouldn’t be in this embarrassing position now. But, no, he had to go with that snake oil salesman Huckabee, splitting conservative voters at the critical moment just before the Florida primary, and letting McCain in to fill the gap.
I said at the time that I thought that conservative Evangelicals would see through Huckabee, but not soon enough to do much good. And that was what happened. Huckabee guarded McCain’s flank against Thompson, and Dobson unwittingly helped him do it.
Arrgh.
No way! If this is the conservative front then conservatives are in worse shape than I thought.
Looks like Dobson must’ve had a divine revelation.
Or George McGovern's first.
Frankly, I don't care what McCain does. I wrote him off a long time ago. Let the Democrats have him, that's who he is appealing to.
I think a LOT of us, not just Dobson, have become more and more terrified, actually, of what an Obama presidency might mean. Virtually every position that man takes is directly opposite of what I believe, and the fact that he has the MSM in his back pocket is alarming. There is no limit to the damage he could do in just four years, damage that would not be easily undone. I support McCain after opposing him initially, and in no way am I a flip-flopper.
McCain has not changed, but he is definitley the lesser of two evils and he knows it. So there was no reason for him to suck up to the conservatives.
“The lesser of two evils is still evil. Dont harm your stature by endorsing evil.”
I’m not even sure if Obama is truly evil. I don’t think it’s good to dillute the meaning of the word.
Well, I do that out of respect for the FR folks here who might like the guy.
Personally, I'm with you.
There is absolutely no way that the nomination of my party's candidate, or any part of a national election should have to go through a radio deacon in Colo Springs.
Here’s why:
Obama...
Voted twice against BAIPA
Singlehandedly blocked it in committee
Voted against blocking porn from school & library computers
Voted agasint barring early release for criminal sex offenders
Voted agaisnt a human cloning ban - and then for it
Supports repeal of DOMA
Openly supports homosexual marriage
Supports sex-ed for kindergarteners
Supports the rabid pro-abort freedom of choice act
Voted against keeping adult stores from within so much of schools & churches
Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan & Phleger
"I respect Senator Obama's religious beliefs and Dr. Dobson doesn't speak for me"- John McCain
You are so dead wrong in your assessment of Dobson! I take much offense at your remark!
Obama’s uber-pro-abortion stance, his termination of abortion-surviving babies, and his ludicrous claim that the Sermon on the Mount gives a “thumbs-up” to gay marriage ought to be enough for any evangelical to steer way clear of him.
Unfortunately, you’re probably correct.
anti-DOMA too
Jim, this is no time to go wobbly.
As for me, I won’t be going wobbly on McCain—he still won’t be getting my vote.
I don’t vote for pushers of amnesty or global warming, regardless of what letter comes after their name.
Exactly. This clown Obama has so many agendas it’s hard to keep up. Except that most of them subvert traditional American values.
Agreed. Been pissed at him since he played hardball with House Leadership ten years ago. Remind me why he and Tony Perkins and others are allowed to hold this party hostage?
If it is true that you meant no offense, then why say what you said? I believe you did mean to offend.
I'm interested in your opinion, and will not criticize.
Dobson could do the courageous thing and endorse Chuck Baldwin or Alan Keyes, both solid Christians with constitutional platforms. However, like many of our national Christian leaders, Dobson seems to embrace unBiblical pragmatism when it comes to endorsing politicians.
Amen! Dobson's stubborn, constipated manipulation denied us the better candidate.
Baldwin is anti war, a 9/11 Truther like Michael Moore and some of his sites and links head into anti Catholic comments and sites.
Keyes is would to tight and couldn’t even win the senate seat in Ill.
Why do you even bother typing that? “No offense to his fans hereabouts.” Right.
Tell me two things you know about Dr. Dobson (note that he has earned a Ph.D., something of which you are clearly ignorant).
I just tire of FReepers who hate those who follow Christ simply because they follow Christ. You tire me, Seaplaner.
If you “couldn’t care less,” why bother leaving a comment?
Does Dr. Dobson as an “uber-ego”? What do you know about him, besides the fact that anti-Christians hate the man? Do you hate all high-profile Christians?
I guess we can now say:
White Evangelicals are to Republicans what Blacks are to Democrats
You’re right. Christians should just shut up and not let their opinions be known. Keep ‘em closed up in the basement. Right?
Why so antagonistic toward this Christian man who wants to express his opinion? Do you hate Christians? Do you hate God? Or only Christian leaders? Or have you simply bought into the liberal media’s smearing of this fine Christian man?
Bull. You're a disrupter. You're a phony. Go to DU. You'll be welcomed there.
Yes, I'm being ungracious toward you. I just get so tired of the anti-Christian rhetoric on FR, a place that used to be frequented by decent people and that has become infiltrated by sophomores like you.
You really believe Dr. Dobson has that much power?
If not, why did you write that? If so, why not see him as an ally?
Baldwin may be anti-Iraq war, but he is not a liberal opponent of the war, and he is solid on the Constitution. Please provide a citation for the claim that he is “a 9-11 truther like Michael Moore”. That seems to be a pretty outrageous claim.
The best candidates will NEVER win so long as we accept the premise that one of the media anointed liberals must be selected. Dobson, supposedly a leader and not a blind follower of the media, is only reinforcing his irrelevancy by endorsing a far left liberal like McCain.
Dobson and his comrades are knuckleheads if they think they can ignore the electoral needs of the Party and then see a dime of federal money coming into their “faith based” programs.
