I learned a lot this week. Namely, Boy Scout leaders are pedophiles in togas.
Obviously, that is preposterous and offensive. Sadly, it's part of the information I gathered while reading a comic book produced by the re-election campaign for County Commissioner Brent Rinehart. The whole 16-page affair is expected to be mailed to voters, Rinehart told The Oklahoman. The point was to be lighthearted, he said.
Lighthearted campaign materials: Good idea. Insulting as many people as possible with cartoon drawings: Bad idea.
Then again, I've never run for political office, so who am I to say what works in the life-and-death battle for votes? Maybe some people will enjoy the comic book, which includes a balding man with glasses explaining the history of Rinehart's time in office.
Rinehart is the commissioner representing District 2 of Oklahoma County, which includes all or parts of Bethany, Choctaw, Del City, Harrah, Midwest City, Oklahoma City and Valley Brook. He was elected an Oklahoma City councilman in 2000 and then a county commissioner in 2004. He's running for re-election this year.
Election years always stir up trouble. I always get frustrated with smear tactics and rudeness. But I try to keep an open mind for as long as possible. I'll read everybody's material regardless of party affiliation. So, I read Rinehart's comic book, which is available on News OK.com.
I learned a lot of things I did not know, including the thing about Scout leaders in togas. These are the highlights:
•Rinehart was in the Air Force and his head is the size of an airplane.
•Run-on sentences and comma craziness is OK.
•There are lots of ways to spell the word pedophile, including using an f.
•The phrase "anal sodomy” is OK to put in a comic book.
•Satan is a relatively short guy, and angels have hugely disproportionate heads.
•Corporation Commissioner Jim Roth is the leader of all gay people.
•Liberals wear trench coats and hang out near lampposts at night. They look sort of like Dick Tracy.
•Satan himself has lost track of how many times he's tried to smear Rinehart's reputation.
•Sheriff John Whetsel carries a gun.
•Some man who looks like an angry Mark Twain wants Rinehart to shut up.
•Satan plans to vote for Brian Maughn or J.D. Johnston. (Apparently not even Satan will vote for the Democrats.)
To be fair, some of these things may be true. But I doubt Satan is even registered to vote in Oklahoma County.

I think the comic book is a bad idea (it seems below the dignity of the office), but did you check it out before posting this atrocious hit job? Contrary to the article, the comic does not in any way state that "Boy Scout leaders are pedophiles in togas."
What it states was that his opponent's idea, which the Boy Scouts resisted would allow pedophiles to become Boy Scout leaders:

On the other hand, whether Jack Chick may be a Satan-possessed schizophrenic abused by a convicted criminal into believing outrageous slanders, or simply a willful genocidal maniac wanna-be, he’s much better at drawing.
