Gun briefing backfires in China

Three Chinese reporters attending a police briefing on the success of an anti-gun campaign were accidentally shot, media reports say.

An officer picked up one of the weapons on show - a confiscated home-made gun - but it went off in his hand.

A reporter needed surgery for injuries to his ankle, crotch and chest, after being hit by what appeared to be pebbles fired by the gun.

Two others were slightly injured in the incident in Nanchong, southern China.

According to the Chongqing Times, the home-made gun had been designed for shooting birds.

It was demonstrated 10 minutes after a news conference giving details of a special campaign against illegal explosives and weapons.

"Journalists from 13 media outlets were led to a hall on the second floor after attending the meeting on the 12th floor,'' one woman called Lin told the newspaper.

"One officer picked up a confiscated pistol and demonstrated it to the journalists.''

Lin said she heard a bang and saw West China City Daily reporter Su Dingwei collapse.

"White smoke was rising in the room and crushed stone-like things were scattered all around,'' she was quoted as saying.

Gun powder. Originally used in fireworks.

Chinese home-made one-shot apparently made from fireworks (white smoke/black powder?) and rocks.

Kinda goes to show that no matter how restrictive the society, people will find ways to arm themselves.

Beat me to it. First rule my old dad taught me about gun safety, always assume every gun is loaded and check or double check for yourself. Never believe anyone else.

Always control the direction of the muzzle.

And always have some one hold your Tsingtao or your foreign owned Bud.

Home made guns are notoriously dangerous...
My dad had a late WW II Japanese single shot zipgun. It would fire the shell when you gave it a hard look.

“One officer picked up a confiscated pistol and demonstrated it to the journalists.’’

I bet that the journalists will be very careful not to ask that guy any uncomfortable questions in the future!

Depends on the resistance/home-fabricator. The Chechens have turned out truck loads of a well designed and easily homebuilt 9mm submachine pistol. Of course, quality varied as would expected but the design is well proven and safe, all else being equal.

It shows the remarkable resilience of private folks who refuse to give up.

Home made guns are notoriously dangerous...

It depends on who is doing the making. Many of the firearms designs used today are based on prototypes that were "home made".

Federal law doesn't prohibit individuals from making sporting firearms for their own personal use; most of the engineers I know (and all of the good ones) have at least considered building their own design at some time, and more than a few of them have actually done so.

I have a local gunsmith's .50 cal air rifle. Check out Quackenbushairguns.
It fires a .495 ball and is a hoot to shoot.

The first picture on that page is impressive; I would've never considered an airgun for bison.

The .50 moves at just under 900 fps with about 2500 ft. pounds of knock down. It will go through a quarter inch of pine board.
