Italians Shocked After Sunbathers Relax on Beach Near Dead Bodies
Fox News ^ | 07/21/2008 | Fox News

Naples Photographs that depict Italian sunbathers relaxing at the beach despite the nearby presence of the bodies of two Gypsy girls who had drowned, have raised questions about Italian attitudes toward the Roma minority, The U.K. Guardian reported.

The incident took place outside of Naples on Saturday. At about 1 p.m., four Gypsy teens, who had reportedly been begging beachgoers, decided to go into the water, despite apparently not being able to swim. The girls were hit by an unusually large wave, resulting in an attempted rescue by life-savers from a nearby beach. Two of the girls were saved. The other two, aged 14 and 16, could not be reached in time, The Guardian reported.

Not to sound callous... but they’re DEAD! What are you going to do about it? You might as well enjoy your day at the beach...

Why would they just be left at the beach, why weren’t they taken away is the real question.

Laz needs bail?

Let's see now ... I go to the beach and see a couple of bulges under some wraps/towels .... which is more morbid? ... go take a peek or lie down and cop some rays?

Rays win.

Umm. I think it raises more questions than just that.

How do they know the people knew?

They last thing I would think is that dead bodies were being left on the beach covered by towels.

Only way to prove prejudice, is to get some White bathers, drown them, put them on the beach on towels, and see if anyone acts differently.

In June, I was at a resort in the Dominican Republic that was inhabited by 95% Italians, if it started to sprinkle, they ran for cover (duh, hello, you are in a swimsuit on a BEACH), how bizarre they sit there with dead bodies like it’s nothing....

I wonder how long it took the authorities to show up. This being Italy, I imagine it took a little while. But what were people supposed to do, abandon the entire beach?

According to The Guardian, Italy is reportedly plagued by anti-Gypsy sentiments.

This sounds like folks took a look at the feet (the rest was covered up), decided they were Gypsies, and THEN decided to not do anything.

Or else the paper is trying to cry racism just for fun, or out of habit.

They wouldn't do that, would they?

Perhaps the other beach goers saw the drowning unfold and didn’t really care.

Do you mean like...

humans are just evolved animals, and after they’re dead, there’s nothing to follow but rotting of the body

vs

humans are the crowning glory of the creation of God, made in His image, for the purpose of His glory, and have eternal existance?

If I’m not mistaken, these two competing belief systems would lead to differing attitudes toward the lives of these two girls.

If they offed themselves in a creative and imaginative manner, we would be laughing about Darwin Awards.

Check the photo of the two sitting on the beach. The lady has her hand over her mouth. It doesn't look like they are having a good time. They are just sitting there. No one is dancing and there's no volley ball game going on with the two bodies used as boundary markers.

By the way, you lost the discussion with the hitler remark.

I agree that it looks like someone took a picture and made up a story to go around it. It doesn’t look like the people in that picture are having great fun. Perhaps they were staying there to watch over the bodies until the authorities came. I can’t see the woman’s face, but the man looks deep in thought.

I don't see anything disrespectful about the sunbaithers remainging where they were

This does look like more than a few meters away too.  It looks like there's 20 to 30 feet between the baithers and the bodies.
The photo appears to have been taken with a mid-range lense, which makes the bodies and the baithers look closer than they actually are.

This is unprofessional reporting IMO.  It seeks to cause a rift based on essentially nothing at all.

This is the type of thing that causes civil disturbances, while the reporter goes off on their merry little way, oblivious,
or worse yet, to get awards for covering the carnage.

I haven’t looked at any other pictures but this one doesn’t show callousness, they could just as easily be pondering about the sadness of the deaths for all we know.

I dunno - I can be a pretty cold sort of guy at times, and I’ve seen a dead body or two in my life, but I think I’d be profoundly disturbed at that sight. Yeah, I’d leave. Others’ mileages may vary.

She doesn’t have her hand over her mouth, as if in shock. She has her chin resting on her palm in a bored manner.

The callousness shown is being equaled by the response to death on many of our FR threads as of late.

How terribly, terribly sad that they couldn’t be saved.

As for the uproar about this picture, it’s nothing. These two people are apparently the closest ones and they’re far enough away.

From the headline one would think it was like Coney Island crowded except with two under the blankets instead of on them.

Actually, those people might be several hundred feet away. Telephoto lenses create a major optical illusion by compressing depth.

This article said it was near Naples, not in Naples. If it is near Amalfi the climb from the road to the Med is a good one, especially with “dead” weight.

I won’t criticize those for enjoying what they can of the day; but would criticize those who did not help rescue the girls. That’s the real issue here. Lifeguards helped and others watched?

We don't know the conditions or who else was at the beach. Were there very strong waves, were the only people nearby aged, or not good swimmers? Rescuing a drowning person in a strong current is very difficult- without the proper expertise, you are likely to become just another victim for the lifeguards to rescue. If these girls could not get back to shore because of the conditions in the water, that leads me to believe that the people on the beach were right to wait for professional lifeguards to arrive. And when they do arrive, you're better off staying out of their way rather than trying to help.

This story isn't all that full of details.
