~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada

070207-F-1695N-300

Nellis Air Force Base (IATA: LSV, ICAO: KLSV) is a United States Air Force base, in Clark County, Nevada, on the northeast side of Las Vegas. An installation of the Air Combat Command (ACC), Nellis is the location of United States Air Force Warfare Center and a major training location for both U.S. and foreign fighter aircraft aircrews. The base is named for William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas resident and Air Force P-47 pilot who died in action during the Battle of the Bulge.

Nellis, an integral part of the United States Air Force's Air Combat Command, is known as the "Home of the Fighter Pilot." It is the pinnacle of advanced air combat aviation training. The base's all-encompassing mission is accomplished through an array of aircraft: A-10; F-15C; F-15E; F-22A; F-16; RQ-1A and MQ-1 Predator remotely piloted aircraft; and HH-60G helicopters. Nellis' work force of approximately 12,000 military and civilian people makes it one of the largest single employers in southern Nevada.

A Western Air Express dirt runway, a water well and a small operations shack eight miles north of Las Vegas was the setting of the original site of today's Nellis Air Force Base.

In October 1940, Maj. David Schlatter, of the U.S. Army Air Corps, surveyed several areas in Utah, Arizona and Nevada looking for a site to locate the "first" American flexible aerial gunnery school. Major Schlatter was particularly interested in the Nevada site since about 90 percent of the area north, northwest and northeast of Las Vegas was desert wasteland.

On Jan. 25, 1941, Las Vegas Mayor John L. Russell signed over the property to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps for the development of the flexible gunnery school. The mission of the new school, the Las Vegas Army Air Corps Gunnery School (located on the new Las Vegas Army Air Field), was defined as "training of aerial gunners to the degree of proficiency that will qualify them for combat duty."

Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is one of the largest fighter bases in the world. Aircraft from Nellis operate on the Nevada Test and Training Range, which offers more than 15,000 square miles of airspace and 4,700 square miles of restricted land.

More than 75 percent of all live munitions used by the Air Force for training are dropped on the Nevada Test and Training Range. Many communities in southern Nevada see and hear Nellis aircraft 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From 100 feet above the ground to twice the speed of sound, Nellis conducts advanced combat training, performs operational test and evaluation, and develops tactics.

The U.S. Air Force Demonstration Team, The Thunderbirds, is located at Nellis Air Force Base

The 3600th Air Demonstration Team was declared operational on June 1, 1953, although the team itself had been together and practicing for about 6 weeks prior. At this time the team had no name. There already were the Sky-Blazers, Blue Angels, Acrojets, and now the 3600th Air Demonstration Team? This just wouldn't do. During June 1953, a contest was held at Luke AFB, home of the 3600th, to pick a name for the new team. The name chosen was "Thunderbirds".

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you
The love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you
Wherever you are, God is,
And all is well.
Amen.

BLESS THIS HOUSE
 Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

Love, INC
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. —Colossians 3:17

When I heard about the service agency called Love, INC, I assumed that meant Love, Incorporated. But it actually means Love—In the Name of Christ. The organization’s goal is to mobilize churches to reach out to a hurting and needy world in the name of Christ.

Throughout history, people have said they’re acting in Jesus’ name, when in reality it was for their own advantage. During World War II, the horrors of the Holocaust were sometimes rationalized by those who labeled the Jews “Christ-killers.” Today racist groups dare to use “Christian” in their name or literature while using violence and hatred to intimidate people.

The Word of God is so saturated with the word love that it’s hard to imagine how anyone could justify doing hateful acts in the name of Christ. Love is at the core of the gospel: Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was motivated by God’s love. “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9).

As grateful followers of Jesus, we are told to “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17). When we represent Him to other people in word and deed, they should see love, in the name of Christ.

Teach me to love—this is my plea;
May all the Spirit’s graces shine through me;
Tear from my heart all hate, foolish pride;
Help me to live like Christ the crucified. —Peterson
© 1968 John W. Peterson Music Company.

Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, . . . but have not love, it profits me nothing. —1 Cor. 13:3

Years ago we were refueling A-10's on Texas Dry Lake (Nellis Range) from a C-130. Our safety technician was a well endowed blonde who donned her halter top and climbed the ladder with a slice of watermelon for the boys in the cockpit while being gassed up in the 100 deg temps.

Couldn't do it today; and the mission commander (me) would probably be in Gitmo. But they loved it, she loved it, and it snowed the Brits like they'd never been.

The world, and it seems especially the US, has become a sad paranoid place.
