BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Conan O'Brien will take over the "Tonight" Show next June — and what happens to deposed host Jay Leno after that is anybody's guess.

Leno's last show will be Friday, May 29, and O'Brien will start the following Monday, June 1, NBC executives told a Television Critics Association meeting Monday.

I agree. I was a teen back then, but I remember Carson being so much better than Leno.

Question: Is there anybody who has a good, late night TV talk show?

I used to like Letterman, but haven't paid attention to him for over 10 years.

The Tonight Show died when Letterman got the shaft from NBC.

Letterman's NBC run was brilliant; he resurrected the tradition of Steve Allen and added his own cynical, modern attitude.

Letterman earned the right Johnny's chair.

NBC blew it big time and Letterman has never been the same once his NBC chemistry was removed.

Sure was. Those 1.5 hour shows back in the 60s and 70s were incredible.

I remember one night with Bob Hope, George Gobel, and a third person.

Hope came out and stayed for the whole show like they used to in those days. Carson, Hope, Gobel, and possibly John Wayne sat there and talked about their lives and bantered back and forth. Man that was fun to watch.

These airheads today come on for one seven minute segment to hawk their next movie, and prove how shallow they can be.

These shows today are a major embarrassment by comparison.

” I remember one night with Bob Hope, George Gobel, and a third person?”

That “third person” was DEAN MARTIN!

Remember Dean flicking his cigarette ashes into ol’ George’s drink. LMAO

Letterman couldn't hold a match to Carson!

Letterman is about as funny as a rubber crutch!

I was a teen back then, but I remember Carson being so much better than Leno.

All I remember of Carson is '70s leisure suits, painful to watch skits involving such characters as Karnak, Aunt Blabby, etc., and spectacularly unfunny monologues topped with thick layers of Ed McMahon's forced laughter. Dana Carvey's spoofs of Carson on SNL were funnier than anything I ever saw Carson do himself.

As for Conan, he's become a ham and his interviewing technique has never been good. But he's still got the best writers of any late-night show and he's also got the same quirky wit and appreciation for the absurd that Letterman used to have before he turned into a crabby old man. Hopefully Conan will avoid Letterman's fate and still be funny when he moves to 11:30.

None of those named are funny. They laugh at their own not-funny jokes and are loud. Another one who fits that bill although not late night is Joy Behar. Really not funny, laughs and looks around to give the laugh cue to all and is so grating and loud. She doesn’t even write her own jokes so her delivery is what is so bad. Ugh!
Very funny comic is Jim Gaffigan. And he doesn’t laugh at his own jokes and isn’t loud.

I’ve only seen a few minutes of late night talk shows in the last decade or more, but Leno is far better than Kimmel and O’Brien put together.

I was a huge Carson fan since the mid 60s.

I watched Letterman for a few years on CBS. I was a Letterman fan until it became obvious he was such a dumba$$ leftist. He made a Bush crack (During the 2000 elections.) and I haven't watched him since. I only watched Leno a handful of times.

Conan is an idiot.

I'd watch a 30 minute Leno show about cars, on the Speed channel, if he had one.

So much fun, and you don't get the sense that Hope, Martin or Gobel would slit someone else's throat if they felt they weren't getting equal air time. Three guys who seem pleased and self confident enough to just hang out and let what happens happen, whether written material or ad libbing.

I recently read DINO by Nich Tosches, which gave me a whole new perspective on Martin. My respect for him has skyrocketted since I read that entertaining book, and I suggest it to anyone interested not just in Martin but in how entertainment and celebrity has altered in the past few decades.

I partially agree with you.

Last Friday night, I actually stayed up long enough to see part of Conan O’Brien’s show.

It was freakin’ awful. The guy is not very funny. I really can’t picture myself watching the Tonight Show when O’Brien takes over.

Leno, on the other hand, is funny. He takes potshots at everyone and has a unique sense of humor.

Conan blows bigtime. Fallon will make Conan look like a genius and no one wants to tune into CBS to watch a rich and bitter old man, aka, Letterman.

If Leno goes to, let say to Fox, that’s where the audience is going too. Leno can name his price and Fox will pay it.

Letterman is just a bitter and rich old man. The change to NBC had nothing to do with this. For the first few years on CBS, things were fine. Now Dave’s old, married with a kid and still worried about his own mortality.

And I quit caring.

Class, today's exercise is - "Use Conan and funny" in a sentence.

Conan is NOT funny.

I liked Carson and watched often. I only record Leno on Mondays to watch Headlines. Letterman hasn't been funny for years and his bits are very lame. Conan is unwatchable to me. At least Jay Leno is funny.

I agree totally. One thing tho’, I don’t believe Letterman ever married the mother of his child.

Stopped watching Letterman years ago also, watched Leno for a while, then stopped, but if forced to watch I’d choose Leno. Johnny Carson was the best!

Coincidentally (I’m not being sarcastic - this is really true), my work schedule changed drastically in June of 1992, and I have not seen much late night TV since.

I still think of Leno as “the new guy.”

I’m much more of an expert on early-morning radio these days.

Steve Allen got the Tonight Show off to a great start in the 50’s, Jack Paar was OK, but a drag sometimes and then there was the KING, Johnny Carson. Late night shows have gone dark since. Greg is interesting but I can not understand what he says sometime (my problem, not his). Please excuse any misspelled names.
