Holy Moses! PBS documentary suggests Exodus not real
OrlandoSentinel.com ^ | July 21, 2008 | Hal Boedeker

Abraham didn't exist? The Exodus didn't happen?

The Bible's Buried Secrets, a new PBS documentary, is likely to cause a furor.

"It challenges the Bible's stories if you want to read them literally, and that will disturb many people," says archaeologist William Dever, who specializes in Israel's history. "But it explains how and why these stories ever came to be told in the first place, and how and why they were written down."

The Nova program will premiere Nov. 18. PBS presented a clip and a panel discussion at the summer tour of the Television Critics Association.

The program says the Bible was written in the sixth century BC and that hundreds of authors contributed.

"At least the first five books of the Bible come together during the Babylonian exile," says producer Gary Glassman.

The program challenges long-held beliefs. Abraham, Sarah and their offspring probably didn't exist, says Carol Meyers, a religion professor at Duke University.

"These stories are unlikely to represent real historical events, but rather there's some kernel of ancient experience in there which has survived and which helps give identity to the people at the time the Bible finally took shape centuries and centuries later," Meyers says.

I guess all those original texts from the first century which exist escaped the producers pot fogged mind. I’m referring to the New Test of course. The Bible is the most documented text of all time.

You should know that any person, site or event in the Bible is fictional, don’t you read the media or watch TV; that’s the only way we can be brainwashed to dispel the Judeo-Christian faith.

Mohammed (piss upon him)and islamist are the real deal.

Another shocker: The program contradicts the biblical view that the Israelites came from somewhere else into the land of Canaan. "The film shows that they were Canaanites," Apsell says.

I guess that's it. They have video proof. I wonder if they sent back a robot into ancient prehistory and had it record events, or maybe they have a machine that opens up a window in time that let's us peer backward thousands and thousands of years. Now we can answer all our questions about the past... Like who killed Kennedy (either), or what really happened at Tora Bora, or where the heck was Obama born?

But I doubt the producers of the show are not going to give us access to all their time traveling equipment, so we'll just have to trust them to show us the truth. Besides, they have video.

They string together this possibility, and that conjecture, and they think that maybe it happened this way and note that this could have been caused by that ...

And why do they jump through such hoops? Because they have an overwhelming need to attack any worldview which is based on Faith.

Irony, anyone?

When did someone start challenging this? There is ample evidence of the existence of Abraham outside of scripture. Shoot, archaelogists are pretty sure that they know which group of houses (if that's what you want to call them) in Ur of Chaldea he lived in.

More PC anti-religious, hate-filled propaganda. And if you don’t think this isn’t connected to the Nov. elections, you’re dreaming. Every single thing they do is Liberal agenda driven.

On a lighter note, early am Boston news, channel 4, reports that our wonderful governor, Deval Patrick, is laughing off rumors that he might be nominated to the Supreme Court when (not if), Obama wins. He wants a second term as MA. governor. This is reported giddily by the blonde reporterette. I find myself so nauseated I can’t eat breakfast.

This is more crap from the same guy who's past crap has always been proven fraudulous. Never gives up, does he. As an aside, this time he's really pushing his luck. If what he says is true, Islams entire claim to be descendants of Abraham through the bastard child (which can't be true anyways because Bedouins already existed, his bastard child was the result of his Bedouin slave woman getting knocked up) is false. (the Islamic version of the story is messed up anyways)

Therefore, Islam doesn't exist. That ought to get his head chopped off if he's caught in a dark alley by a ROP nut.

>>>PBS = NAZI channel

Well I don’t know about that. The History Channel used to be the Hitler Channel though. I’m afraid it’s become the Alaska Channel since then. I miss Panzers.

I don’t think it’s a news bulletin the literal story of the Exedous is doubtful. Decades of archeology indicate strongly the Pyramids were built as public works projects employing Egyptian volunteers building up spiritual credit for serving their Pharaoh-God while living on government rations.

C.B. Demille style slave crews would slow the work down. They’d be more trouble then they’d be worth when professional workmen were volunteering.

The strong make many, the weak make few, the dead make none. And slaves aren’t big on quality control.

That said I have wondered that another theory might be more likely. That some bands of Hebrew tribesmen had been allowed to settle in Eastern Sinai to work the land and help defend the frontier, that they failed to adapt to Egyptian ways and ultimately broke their oaths of loyalty and escaped back to Judea. Instead of “Pharoah’s hosts” in pursuit there might have been a local garrison, or more likely the Egyptians would have said good riddance.

"But I doubt the producers of the show are not going to give us access to all their time traveling equipment, so we'll just have to trust them to show us the truth. Besides, they have video. "

I'm sure he has a good explanation of how all these sixth century authors predicted the temple destruction, how Herods stones which still lay where they were thrown down by the Romans, plus all the damage to the stone road from when these huge stones fell.

There are simply too many prophecies that show proof that the bible IS the word of God, and written by the Prophets over vast periods of time inspired by the Holy Spirit and unknown to each other.

The it's confirmed again by the Gospel of Christ, written by the Apostles whose original parchments still exist today.

Simply walking through the holy lands today, looking at the landmarks and ruins described in the bible prophacies before they even existed is wonderous.

You sure are assuming a lot. You are assuming slaves of the time would be rebellious and difficult workers, delivering shoddy work.

Nothing could be further from the truth. They were born into slavery, and were the professional workers, their crafts handed down father to son. Many slaves achieved higher social status, just as the bible describes.

I’ll have to go back over the story, but I don’t think the Israelites made the pyramids, according to the bible. They are mentioned as working the fields and making straw bricks.

Slaves of those times weren’t beaten and worked till death. It was simply their station in life, and they lived in acceptance of that social order within that society. They WERE the professional craftsmen, not subordinates of them.

Abraham and Sarah are more real than ethics and honesty
at PBS.

But then if Abraham was gay, or a dictator, then
PBS would be on its knees before him.

I doubt they did either, but if any were built during that period of captivity, then they would have been skilled enough to do it.

The skills to build thew temple in Israel (Herod's stones for example) had to come from somewhere, so no doubt their were many stone masons among them. Also farmers, and every other type of craftsmen

This isn't exactly new news. The books and ideas have been around for many years, even if PBS just discovered them.

I have one of the books, but haven't looked at it in awhile and am too lazy to do so now. But from (flawed) memory;

Textual analysis indicates 3 or 4 principal sources for the first 5 books of the old Testament.
In stories about events which supposedly occurred in the 10th or 11th centuries B.C. there are references to customs and practices which characterized the 6th century and were unknown to the earlier time.
There are no references in Egyptian records to the events described in the Bible.

That's all I can remember but it's pretty interesting stuff. Worth looking at.

My guess is the part about Abraham not existing will be minimized, though the rest, beginning with Sara won’t... The reason? Well, Abraham was the “father” of Judaism, Christianity, and islam... And while PBS will have no problem with claiming that the first two are based on lies and stories, we must remember that this IS a leftist front group, and as such, is inherently cowardly. And in this case, for good reason. Because though PBS and their ilk will talk about Christian “NAZIs” and such, they do know that insulting muslims regarding their faith WILL get them killed.

There is another thread on this same PBS program. Some good comments there.
Personally I’ve found the whole myth of the literal existence of PBS hard to swallow, especially the Nova story with the part about learning to be noncommercial under the leadership of a producer Glassman.
It may be shocking but recent scholarship has discovered clear evidence of commercials between programs that was long thought to be only sponsor information.
Further details of “membership drive” rituals to follow.

Without a definition of "Canaanites" then you can say anything at all.

The Bible attests that the Hebrews were living in Canaan before the Egyptian Captivity and between the Egyptian Captivity and the Babylonian Captivity - if residency is the test, then they were Canaanites because they lived in Canaan.

Yet their ancestors came from Aramaea and they spoke an Aramaean language, and it is clear that they had different customs from and were in constant conflict with the other peoples in Canaan.

Ho-hum. This is the same bag of menel that's been rammed down our throats for almost two hundred years and PBS acts like it's just been discovered for the first time? They imply that most people interpret the Bible literally and will be shocked to learn these hoary old theories?

But I thought no one had ever interpreted the Bible literally until ignorant rednecks appeared on the scene after being influenced by nineteenth century positivism! You mean that's not so? Rednecks aren't the only people who believe the Biblical stories are true? Who'da thunk it???

Considering the number of "religious" people who dismiss the first eleven chapters of Genesis as mythology, I find it hard to believed anyone would be shocked at the logical conclusion of such thinking.

On another thread, we were just discussing the DNA evidence (to back family records) that the Kohen line (the line of Aaron) has a common male ancestor circa the time of the Exodus.

http://www.cohen-levi.org/jewish_genes_and_genealogy/the_dna_chain_of_tradition.htm

Yes, all this definatively proves is that one man was the ancestor of the Kohenim.

At the time of the historical Exodus.

Proving amazing maternal marital fidelity for some 35 centuries (something like 99% of all purported Kohen had the gene sequence).

And corresponding to family and Biblical history.

Coincidence? I think not.

Your posts assumes two things not in evidence:

(1) That the Bible says that the Jews were the slave laborers who built the Pyramids. The Bible makes no mention of the Pyramids.

(2) That there was some large Egyptian middle class of skilled workmen.

A more accurate picture of Egyptian life was this: 95% of the population were subsistence farmers. There was an elite of priests, scribes and fine craftsmen and these urban upper classes had slaves and eunuchs to serve them and to oversee their households and lands.

The pyramids were built not by volunteers, but by farmers whose taxes were extracted from them in kind by pressgang labor. The work was supervised by artisans and architects, but there was not some vast army of well-to-do craftsmen who decided to work for a few years for free.

Construction projects yes, of course. And the Jews were busy in construction, no doubt about that.

But the Pyramids in Egypt (especially the classics at Giza) were built too early for Moses' era.
