Auto industry on unsustainable path: Ghosn

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AFP) - The global auto industry is heading down an unsustainable path and needs new technology to cope with record fuel costs, Nissan-Renault chairman Carlos Ghosn said Tuesday.

"The doubling of oil prices to 130 to 140 dollars per barrel means that one billion dollars is being transferred every day to the oil producing countries," Ghosn told reporters as he dedicated Nissan America's new headquarters.

There is a large, untapped market for electric vehicles, Ghosn said, noting that a recent study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology predicted that there would be 10 million electric vehicles in the world by 2016 and that half would be on US roadways.

And where does he imagine all that electricity is going to come from?

Unfortunately this is an issue on which many FReepers are on the wrong side. Electric and hybrid vehicles are the future, and gas guzzlers are on their way out.

Don't need 'em. I'll just use my gasoline-powered emergency generator to charge it.

I think it's worth remembering that George Washington had no SUV. The 'petroleum economy' is a relatively recent thing and won't last forever. Whether or not your are right, things will change. And that's real change, not political change.

They're the FUTURE all right. Back to the Future. What are the farmers going to use to run the combines to harvest the corn necessary to run those hybrids? Flux capacitors?

You’re absolutely right, but not just because of a shortage of gas or global warming. The main problem is that we’re sending hundreds of billions of dollars directly to our enemies. The Saudis, Venezuelans, Russians, Iranians and Libyans are making a killing and much of their profits will be aimed at killing us.

I hope that the auto industry sells a gazillion electric and hybrid vehicles. That just leaves more gasoline for those of us who prefer high performance cars.

Ghosn also predicted that US auto sales will likely sink to 14.3 million units this year. "We're seeing '09 as no better," he added. "I think we're going to see a very challenging couple of years.

What a genius! He heads a car company that will make electric cars in the FUTURE yet can't provide them today.

Say you own two cars. An SUV and a small car. You want to replace one of them to save gas costs. Assume you rack up the same mileage on both cars, and maintenance and all that is about equal. So now, should you either:

Replace your current SUV that gets 12mpg and replace it with one that gets 15 mpg

or:

Replace your car that gets 25 mpg with a super efficient car that gets 40 mpg. Which option gets you further ahead?

Door number one is a 25 percent improvement and door number two is a 60 percent improvement. Is there a door number three?

This may come as a suprise but....he didn't have an electric car, either.

You want to replace one of them to save gas costs.

And how many years will pass before the amount you've saved through having a bit more fuel-efficient car surpasses the various additional expenses incurred through the purchase of a new car?

I ran the numbers for a motorscooter replacing my mini-SUV. If gas cost zero for the former, it was still close to 2 years to break-even, and that meant using it all year 'round, including in Seattle's infamous dark winter drizzle.

Question was which option saves you the most in gas costs?

Nope, no surprise. But my post was of course about the inevitability of technological change.

It's pretty much a wash.

At 12 MPG it takes about 8.3 gallons of gas to go 100 miles. At 15 MPG it takes about 6.7 gallons. That's a difference of about 1.6 gallons.

At 25 MPG it takes 4 gallons of gas to go 100 miles. At 40 MPG it takes 2.5 gallons. That's a difference of 1.5 gallons.

It's pretty much a wash.

I guess, but at 10,000 miles driven with $4 gas the small car upgrade costs 10% more than the SUV upgrade.

What would that be? About 1% of the world's vehicles?
