Pawlenty's Promise And A Romney Float...
23 Jul 2008 01:10 pm
The political world is buzzing today about Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who spent hours yesterday at John McCain's Arlington, VA campaign headquarters and who, according to a source of CNN's Dana Bash, was mentioned by McCain quite favorably and without bidding during a meeting.
Someone else in the meeting confirmed that McCain indeed mentioned Pawlenty but did not find McCain's tone unusual. (McCain also praised Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani.)
McCain's campaign awaits his decision. A full-time staff has already been appointed to service the political and scheduling needs of the eventual vice presidential nominee, and prominent floor space at campaign headquarters has been set aside. The staff reports to campaign manager Rick Davis.
Some allies of Mitt Romney have suggested, in meetings with campaign advisers, that McCain make his pick -- Romney -- sooner, rather than later. They're floating this scenario: McCain picks Romney in early August, and Romney spends three days holding closed-door fundraisers. Then, Romney cloisters himself, bones up on everything that needs boning up, and gets reintroduced at the convention with a major speech. And then McCain and Romney embark on a Midwestern bus tour a la Clinton and Gore in 1992. Just a thought...

Lots of Tim Pawlenty buzz today, as reflected by Pawlenty's price at Intrade doubling.

Whereas Romney is down a few clicks:

(these graphs, BTW, report current information while on the thread)
The information Ambinder reports on staffing and office space is interesting, as it comports with the Novak imminent choice theory.

He needs Mitt.
He needs a name that is known...and he needs his economic expertise...not only that he needs someone with a little fire.
Lastly, he needs cash..Romney knows how to raise cash.

I can’t think of any useful reason to name a VP choice so early. Methinks it’s just an attempt to distract people from the Obamapalooza tour. Novak is probably right... he got played.

"Mitt tanks the ticket," says a McCain insider. "We lose fiscal conservatives.
We lose social conservatives. We lose Catholics. We lose evangelicals.
All the groups were spending time and money on bringing into the camp would be lost.
He just doesn't help us enough to do something like this, as much as Mitt might think we should.
He doesn't even win us Massachusetts."

And they think Ridge will help???
Last night Brit asked The Panel...Dr. K. says it will be Mitt and Jindal if McCain is really desperate. Bill K. loves Palin but thinks it will be Ridge. (sniff) Jeff Birnbaum says definitely Ridge (but Jeff's a lib). I think Ridge would be a terrible choice. There's no excitement factor and he's too tied in with W--we'd hear McCain/Bush, McCain/Bush.

Welcome Diogenesis, with your usual monomaniacal anti-Romney spam.
In this case, you are copying and pasting back what I initially posted at FR:

Interesting tidbit at
American Spectator :
MITT MATCH
While Mitt Romney's set of paid PR minions are busy pushing out Mitt for Vice President spin, McCain campaign insiders say that while it's true they have polled Romney on the bottom of the ticket, the data confirms that such a move would be a political disaster for the party.

There are no particular shortage of Romney threads to which you can lay further waste. Go back to those. It would be nice to have a thread discussing McCain's Veep choices without a thousand repetitive malevolant anti-Romney posts. We know you don't like Romney, allright? You've posted the reasons, okay? You don't have anything new to add, as evidenced from your resorting to reposting my posts from 3 days ago. Unless you have anything new, cogent, and relevant to the thread to add, please buzz off.

” We lose Catholics “
WTH? Where did he get this crap? The liberal Catholics ( think women priests, gay marriage and abortion for one and all ) will never vote for McCain.
The traditional Catholics all favor McCain by default and not one of them have I have spoken to dislike Mitt. They’ve no issue with his religion. I’ve spoken to priests, people in my bible study and more people than I can remember at the last Boston Men’s Catholic Conference.

The sooner we get a Veep the better. McCain needs all the help he can get.
I will bet that Romney gets the nod by the end of next week.
Pawlenty, Ridge, Jindal, etc. are just red herrings.
To: Miss Didi
Ridge is a rather bland, safe choice. Not Mr. Excitement.
I didn’t like Romney at all for President, but he strikes me as be an excellent vice-president, as he can go negative very effectively.
To: Manic_Episode
Don’t count your chickens, it isn’t a done deal yet. Yesterday the Political World was Buzzing about the conversations McCain had with Jingdal. Day before that the Political World was Buzzing about how Romney had the lock. It ain’t over until the old codger sings.

I cant think of any useful reason to name a VP choice so early. Grab headlines away from the Obama Traveling Circus Tour.
To: Diogenesis
I’m a fiscal and social conservative Catholic living in Naples, Florida.
I have already given just under $1000 to Romney’s campaign, and would only donate to McCain’s campaign if Romney were on the ticket.
And everyone I speak to is holding on to their campaign contributions until McCain selects Romney.
It seems your “McCain insider” doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
He’s also discounting the fact that Romney would deliver Michigan in November.

We lose Catholics WTH? Where did he get this crap?
The Romney-loathers cite unnamed polls from anonymous sources in which Romney underperforms with Catholics. That is now. Back when the primaries were in full swing, Romney's strength with Catholics was recognized and respected by his opponents. Witness this guide for Huckabee supporters in MI ( How to Win Michigan for Huckabee , written by FR Romney-loather AFA Michigan) which stressed that Catholics voters should be "left alone".

But don't expect an explanation about voting demographics from Diogenesis. He just copies and pastes any spam that he can that is anti-Romney.

McCain also praised Rudy Giuliani.

What do you think of Rudy ????
To: Tennessee Nana
On most policy, Rudy is too liberal (but I think he’s far more honest about his stances than *omney and didn’t go the weasel/opportunistic route of changing all his positions after he left office). He wants to be NY Governor in 2010, so let him have a shot at that, just not VP (although, again, if McCain loses, he may use the 2 years as Governor to try to win the nomination in 2012).
