To CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" host, we live in a world of absolutes - because the potential of a government bailout of two publicly traded government-sponsored enterprises condemns the entire concept of free market capitalism.
On the July 22 broadcast of Dobbs' show, he attacked proponents of free-market capitalism because of the potential trouble of the two government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM) and Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE).
"Well the - it's a, it's quite a mess, quite a mess indeed," Dobbs said. "And I love the idea that all these free traders, free marketeers now got to have the government to, to bail them out. If I hear one of these ignorant, hypocritical, sanctimonious free traders ever talk about free markets again, they should be pilloried. I mean they are absolutely - this is an administration of jerks and cowards and fools. I mean it's unbelievable."

“Lou Dobbs: Populism rules, capitalism drools.”
Explain to us how bailing out two mortgage ‘giants’ by the taxpayers is capitalism?
Please! The left perverts the language enough, must we? What is happening is NOT the free market. It’s tax payer subsidized corporate socialism.
25 billion bailout for the banks - why not, beats the 450 billion they give the farmers not to grow stuff.
Leave it to Lou Dobbs to criticize capitalism and free markets for the failure and taxpayer bailout of national socialist style government corporations.
Sad to say he’s right. The professed free traders are mostly hypocrites in calling for a bail-out. One of the rare exceptions is Ron Paul who has opposed a bail-out. The true test of whether someone is for a free market is whether they stand by it at pressure points like this.
Absolutely. But don’t expect any whining as long as a Republican is in the White House. After that? Get ready for some squealing.
Boggles the mind, doesn't it?
I don’t watch Dobb’s show, but he might have a point here. There are very few free markets. About the only true free markets to exist in the US were markets for commodities and other products (the real markets, not the exchanges) in the days when most were were produced and sold in the US. As markets became more international, more state owned or state subsidized producers became involved and the markets became less free.
But all these pretend US capitalists lose their free market spirit with amazing speed when their business begins to fail and the only way to save it is a government bailout. How quickly they lose their love of the “market discipline” and “creative destruction” and “efficiency” they are so fond of using as reasons why it’s just fine to enter trade agreements that will with a certainly force some jobs and manufacturing operations to cheap foreign labor.
Yes, these pretend capitalists can’t get to the government trough fast enough when the market discipline and market efficiencies are illustrated by the imminent failure of their businesses, or businesses in which they have significant ownership interests.
They represent the “best” of National Socialist economic policy.
Dobbs is too dumb to understand, he obviously doesn’t have a clue about the roots of Fannie/Freddie...and who is this they you are speaking of....any names/examples?
Free Markets exist and they perform when they do.
The Faux Free Market types are just another type of collectivism...also know as Fascism!
Do you know another person on the TV who supports Border Agents Ramos and Camp. and wants to secure the border more than him?
“.and who is this they you are speaking of....any names/examples?”
All shareholders of those two entities. Any capitalist, free market shareholder would be raising objections to any form of government bailout. Any big brokerage houses raising objections? Any shareholders at all raising objections to a bailout?
“Free Markets exist and they perform when they do.”
List some markets you consider to be free markets.
That’s the obvious point he was making.
How is something euphemistically called “government sponsored enterprise” a “free market”?
The “free traders” have been lying all along because if Benito Mussolini were alive today, he’d be very proud of these falsely named “free trade” enterprises.
TV and Newspapers have been totally taken over by Socialists or worse. Virtually all the people with brains have been purged.
I agree with Lou!
dittos
Free trade free market phony capitalists. They love to privatize profits and socialize losses
I love capitalism but I see the hypocrisy
..he attacked proponents of free-market capitalism because of the potential trouble of the two government-sponsored enterprises..
FOLKS ...AS DISSAPPOINTING DUBYA HAS BEEN ON IMMIGRATION, ON SPENDING, ON EXPANDING FEDERAL PROGRAMS ETC.....he is great compared to what Barry will bring...
DON'T VOTE BARRY IN....KEEP HIM OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE...
This is just one of two or three issues Lou and I agree on.
even here on FR.....its capitalism and free markets until it affects someone's caboose....
I notice we have a lot of people who defend the hedge fund mangager, the Ceo's with multi million dollar packets, the sports guy who gets $100,000,000 contract.....its all what the "free market" will bear....
except, when it comes to unionized workers...then they can just go to hell.....
the woman who called Rushbo last week about "limosine conservatives" is right....there is a mighty big disconnect between people with conservative values in the work force and those who are rich conservatives....
Sorry Cherry.
The GOP acts conservative when there is a Rat President.
Lou Dobbs, who called for Bush to be impeached over non-existent salmonella tomatos.
BUMP!
"Free trade" ain't free and it certainly has nothing to do with "free markets."
This is no different from the Democrat caused high gas prices and then blaming it on Big Oil.
Nope, in good times, they keep it all.
But when their ill conceived recklessness doesn't pay off - they expect taxpayers to ante up.
How dare they...

Really? Link please.
You obviously don’t know anything about economics. It figures, people are dumb when it comes to free trade, they blame it at all costs. Nothing that’s wrong today is free trade’s fault. Wake up! Profits aren’t bad either. I know I’m stepping in with you rabid Lou Dobbs fans.
LOL. I have a few degrees and a few decades of experience that would say you are very, very wrong. It figures, people are dumb when it comes to free trade, they blame it at all costs.
Wrong again. I didn't blame it for anything. I simply stated fact: "Free trade" ain't free and it certainly has nothing to do with "free markets."Nothing thats wrong today is free trades fault. Wake up!Have you ever actually sat down and read a free trade agreement?
That sounds as misguided as the global-warming cultists.Profits arent bad either.
Agreed. I am all in favor of capitalism, free markets, and profits. It's so called "free trade" that we're talkin' about, a wholly different animal.
I know Im stepping in with you rabid Lou Dobbs fans.
Again, wrong. I rarely watch his current show. I did used to enjoy the interviews on his old program, "Moneyline."
