Sen. Reid Says Polygamy Is 'Form of Organized Crime'

Thursday , July 24, 2008

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took a rare opportunity Thursday to switch roles and testify before his colleagues to blast polygamy, a still-used practice among some who practice the Mormon faith.

Reid, D-Nev., is Mormon himself and noted that while his church had cast off its polygamist past, some members continue the practice of men maintaining multiple wives.

The groups that still practice polygamy "are a form of organized crime," Reid told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Give the Left ten years and they'll be singing a different tune on polygamy.

He’s 100% right, but he’s got more important things to be worrying about right now, like changing his mind and allowing a vote on drilling in ANWR and elsewhere in this country.

I’ve got mixed feelings on this issue.

My first thought is always the same: I love, adore, cherish my wife and we get along exceptionally well. But good Lord, why would any man want 2 of them at the same time?

My second thought is: What a legal nightmare to have heirarchies of asset sharing. It’s worse than having multiple partners in a business.

Finally, although I don’t agree with it morally, I could care less if someone has multiple wives. I mean, can’t a man marry one woman and have 5 live-in girlfriends? Is there some law against that? The only “problem” with that approach is that there is no legal tie to the women/children.

It just seems unenforceable and petty to me. The only thing that worries me is that by making it illegal in some sense, we are causing the women to be isolated from the outside world. That can’t be good.

Well pencil-neck, so too is your true religion of socialism also known by its more user-friendly name of liberalism.

Hard working, productive citizens are robbed chiefly via the taxation system. This, to provide income and benefits to individuals who either outright refuse to work, or feel that the score should be evened because better trained, harder working, and more capable people are making more money than they are.

Romney is not going to be picked!

MITT MATCH
While Mitt Romney’s set of paid PR minions are busy pushing out Mitt for Vice President spin, McCain campaign insiders say that while it’s true they have polled Romney on the bottom of the ticket, the data confirms that such a move would be a political disaster for the party.

“Mitt tanks the ticket,” says a McCain insider. “We lose fiscal conservatives. We lose social conservatives. We lose Catholics. We lose evangelicals. All the groups were spending time and money on bringing into the camp would be lost. He just doesn’t help us enough to do something like this, as much as Mitt might think we should. He doesn’t even win us Massachusetts.”

Human nature makes us not want to share our partners.

Would you like to be one of 5 guys sharing the same woman?

That is why these people are so isolated. The men must brainwash the women into accepting the heartache of polygamy as part of God’s plan.

So Harry is right in a way. It is just some glorified sex slave operation.

And by about 1 billion muslims...

Polygamy is actually pretty rare even where it is allowed- only something like 5% of Muslims are in polygamous marriage.

In the Muslim world especially, multiple wives are only an option for richer men- remember, the type of men who have multiple wives in Islamic countries are also the type who do not let their wives work. So the men have to be able to afford the multiple wives and many children.

Weirdly, polygamy, or group marriages, might actually work better in Western societies where women are more likely to work outside the home (not that they're a good idea here, either). But I doubt your average educated Western woman has much interest in sharing a husband with other women.

Joseph Smith and Brigham Young are rolling over in their graves...

I wonder if Reid had his tongue in his cheek ????

The Dilemma

From: Mormonism - Shadow or Reality, Jerald and Sandra Tanner, p. 243:

Mormon leaders find themselves in a rather strange situation. On one hand, they have to uphold polygamy as a righteous principle, but on the other, they have to discourage the members of the Church from actually entering into the practice.

If they repudiated the doctrine of polygamy, they would be admitting that Joseph Smith was a deceiver, and that the church was founded on fraud. If, however, they openly preached and defended the doctrine many people would probably enter into the practice and bring disgrace upon the Church.

Their position is about the same as a person saying, "My church believes in water baptism, but we are not allowed to practice it."

Because of this peculiar dilemma, the Church leaders prefer that there is not much discussion of polygamy. Kimball Young stated: "Today the official Church wants to forget that it is a unique and different people. ... Among other items that they want to forget is the plural marriage system. The general authorities do not like members to talk about polygamy if they can avoid doing so." Isn't one wife enough, page 456.

An excellent summary of the problem, IMHO.

Mr. Reid and his colleagues nationwide are responsible for making homosexual marriage a possibility. They are the ones who have made perversion normal behavior.

Accordingly, regardless of what Mr. Reid says of polygamy, it will probably be allowed in America at some point in the future.

The standard has now been dashed, therefore, anything may pass now as holy matrimony.

Perhaps someone will be able to marry his goat, legally, at some distant date?

Docrine and Covenants Section 132 says otherwise....

John Taylor, third president, once declared: ". . . we are not ashamed...to declare that we are polygamists....that we are firm, conscientious believers in polygamy, and that it is part and parcel of our religious creed'" (Life of John Taylor, p.255).

Brigham Young, the second president of the church, once stated: "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 11, p.269).

Today the Mormon leaders teach that "Plural marriage is not essential to salvation or exaltation" (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, p.523). Bruce R. McConkie also stated that "Any who pretend or assume to engage in plural marriage in this day,... are living in adultery, have already sold their souls to satan, and... will be damned in eternity" (Ibid., pp.522-23).

The only difference between then and now is their ability to get away with it....

As I suspected, Sen. Reid (D-NV) is only interested in demonizing Christian polygamy and ignores Muslim polygamy (here in the USA).

That is a lie and a smear, you can't even ID the “insider” and even if it is true and from an insider it is false.

Mitt is the only one who will save the ticket!

He is sooo wonderful and good looking, and 2-3 sound bites from “gotcha” reporters 15 years ago (plus his voting record, stances, publications, own words, health care plan, recent joining the NRA, etc. etc. etc...) does not change his lengthy Conservative record over the past 18 months.

And McCain adores him just like everyone else on the whole planet (and others I hear) does.

I know this is fact, Ii have it on good authority from truly unbiased people with no agenda what so ever. I promise!

If a man can put up with that much bitching let him have as many as possible.

I don't think there's much bitching within the FLDS, that wouldn't be "Keeping Sweet"

This is Annette, Warren Jeffs' 1st wife. She was the home economics instructor at Alta Academy.

Once, in front of boys and girls gathered in the meeting hall, Warren grabbed Annette's long braided hair, twisting it slowly around his hand, tightening his grip until she dropped to the floor, her face turning crimson and contorting in pain.

She didn't make a sound or movement of protest.

He told the boys that this was how obedient their wives had to be to them. He let go and left the room with no apology to his wife, who stood up, straightened her hair, and went back to teaching.

Annette grasps well the concept of 'Keeping Sweet.'"

When Warren was captured, he was with Naomi Jeffs, a beautiful 32-year-old blond with hair to her knees who was both Warren’s former stepmother and the wife he reportedly called "91".

Someone penned this Top Ten during the Primary race...

Commander in Chief Mitt Romney’s Top Ten Priorities

10. Replace office of vice president with offices of First Counselor and Second Counselor

9. Reduce current size of Cabinet from fifteen to twelve to match the number of oxen supporting Mormon temple baptism fonts.

8. Call the Three Nephites to assume the Office of Homeland Security.

7. Disconnect the “Red Phone” from the link to Moscow to a link to Salt Lake City’s Church Administration Building.

6. Order all military personnel to wear Mormon temple garments for protection from bullets, fire, knife wounds, weapons of mass destruction and sexually transmitted disease.

5. Suggest to Gordon Hinckley that he call Hillary Clinton as first non-Mormon General Relief Society President in order to get more Democrat votes for his second term.

4. Call Boyd K Packer to head up the Federal Bureau of Investigation into any and everything of a personal nature to young men.

3. Rename the Department of the Interior to the Department of the Inferior and call his wife Ann as the director.

2. Begin each cabinet meeting with gang-like handshakes, tokens, signs and penalties and conclude the meeting with the “True Circle Jerk Order of Prayer.”

1. Make Re-formed Egytian the official language of The United Nations.

Can you add any more?
