(CNN) — Support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama extend to death row Wednesday.

According to The Jackson Clarion Ledger, a Mississippi newspaper, death row inmate Dale Leo Bishop's final words before being executed Wednesday night included an appeal to Americans to vote for the Illinois senator.

"For those who oppose the death penalty and want to see it end, our best bet is to vote for Barack Obama because his supporters have been working behind the scenes to end this practice," Bishop said, according to the paper.

Bishop was convicted in 2000 of participating in the murder of a man who was beaten to death with a claw hammer two years earlier.

Oh, yeah, that convinces me!

As if I needed one MORE reason not to vote for Obama...

This one will certainly do. Convicted murderers need to be permanently rehabilitated. And the death penalty does that.

He is/was one of our all stars here on death row...

Haley has been trying to get him gigged for a bit now. They came to him for a reprieve in the last hour, and he just said “No”...

Bishop would be your typical Obama supporter in the free world.

It’s Mississippi, may not matter. We have some counties with 5000 voters who have cast 8000 votes a few times...

Man, I dunno - when you look at the spectrum of support Obama is getting, from Hamas to the Iranian Bassij, Kim Il Jung to Ahmadinejad, a claw hammer murderer to a suicide bomber, well, I have to tell you I’m pretty impressed. That’s the maniac demographic all sewed up. Even Al Capone is voting for Bambi - first, he’s a Chicago homeboy, second, he’s a crook, third, he’s a homicidal maniac, and fourth, he’s dead. Classic Democrat.

What was Dale doing ‘behind the scenes’ to get himself in slam? How many helpless old ladies did he murder ... how many little kids did he ruin ... how many cops did he off????

Former Obama Supporter

Former???

Just because he's a felon, and dead, is no reason to assume he won't be voting for Obama.

Ahh, but being a democrat trumps death when it comes to voting and the fact that he was a felon is a democrat resume enhancer.

He should have spent all of his final breaths admitting his guilt and begging for the forgiveness of society and moreso the family and friends of the person he murdered.

Damn him to hell.

On the way back, Jessie, who was seated in the front passenger seat, asked Gentry why he "narced" or "ratted on" his little brother. [FN2] Gentry denied doing so. Jessie said, "Yeah, you did," then reached down to the floorboard, grabbed a hammer and hit Gentry between the eyes. [FN3] The car coasted to a stop and Gentry begged Jessie not to hit him again. Bishop, who was seated behind Gentry, grabbed Gentry in a headlock and hit him. While he was being held, Jessie struck Gentry in the head again with the hammer. [FN4] Bishop and Jessie next made Gentry move over into the front passenger's seat, and Jessie began driving. He turned off the road and went down a little field road. When Jessie stopped the vehicle, Gentry jumped out of the car and ran. Jessie told Bishop to catch him. There is some discrepancy in the chain of events. In his statement, Bishop indicated that Jessie initially "decked Gentry with his hands." Then Bishop grabbed Gentry and Jessie hit him "probably just twice" with the hammer. After about five minutes Bishop came back with Gentry and forced him to get on his knees in front of the car. Bishop and Jessie began kicking Gentry. Jessie struck Gentry numerous times with the hammer. At one point My hand was asked to hold Gentry while Bishop retrieved beers for himself and Jessie. In response, Myhand begged Jessie to stop. When they finished, Bishop had to dislodge the hammer from Gentry's throat, and then he and Jessie drug Gentry into the bushes. While returning to Myhand's apartment, Jessie and Bishop discussed finding a shovel with which to bury Gentry. At Myhand's apartment, Jessie and Bishop washed off and changed into some clean clothes given to them by Myhand. When Bishop, Jessie, Cory and Rakestraw finally left the apartment, Myhand and Dobbs called the police. Myhand took the officers to the site of the murder, and Gentry's body was recovered. Gentry's car was there, and a shovel was found nearby. Bishop and Jessie apparently fled the scene when the police car pulled up. They hid out in the woods until they were apprehended on December 13, 1998.

Burn in hell you worthless piece of Obamasupporter.

“...Bishop’s attorneys have argued that his life should be spared because he did not swing the hammer that killed Marcus James Gentry on Dec. 10, 1998. Bishop also claims his bipolar disorder prevented him from making a sound decision when he waived jury sentencing at the end of his 2000 trial and asked the presiding judge for the death penalty.

Bishop acknowledges participating in the attack, but another man, Jessie Johnson, admitted striking the fatal blows. Johnson was tried separately and sentenced to life without parole.

Epps said he discussed Johnson’s role in the crime with Bishop.

“He indicated to us he thinks Johnson should be where he is on death row,” Epps said.

The attack began in Gentry’s car after a night of drinking and drug use and continued on an isolated road near Saltillo in north Mississippi, court records show. When Gentry tried to run, Bishop chased him down, holding Gentry while Johnson bludgeoned the 22-year-old victim. Prosecutors said Gentry was hit 23 times before the hammer lodged in his throat. The man was left for dead in bushes along the dirt road.

Bishop said he later changed his mind about wanting to die after being prescribed medication for the bipolar disorder that was diagnosed in prison.

“He wants to live, at least that’s what he indicated to us,” Epps said.

Bishop would be the youngest person executed in the state since 27-year-old Connie Ray Evans was put to death in 1987 in the gas chamber. Bishop would also be the second man executed in Mississippi this year.

Gentry’s mother and uncle planned to witness the execution, but Corrections officials said they declined interviews.

Bishop’s parents, ex-wife, oldest brother and nephew visited him Wednesday afternoon. Bishop’s younger brother is serving a 13-year sentence on an unrelated manslaughter charge. Two of the condemned inmate’s teenage sons were on his visiting list, but it was not immediately clear if they met with him....”

Finally, after the trial judge read his verdict, he gave Bishop the opportunity to address the court. Bishop stated the following:

DEFENDANT BISHOP: I just want to say to James there, I’m sorry for what happened to Mark. Mark was my friend. You know, I — I thought Mark needed his ass kicked. I did. I didn’t know Jessie was gonna go all out like that. Mark was a good man. I mean, he was straight up. He was cool. Mark’s in heaven right now. I ain’t never gonna ask Mark to forgive me for what I did, for my part in it. I ain’t never gonna ask God to forgive me. So you ain’t got to worry about me ever seeing Mark. I ain’t going to heaven; I won’t allow it. For what I did, I deserve to die. I ain’t gonna ask this Court to spare my life and let me grow old. I ain’t gonna do it. Your Honor?

THE COURT: Yes, sir?

DEFENDANT BISHOP: These people here, some of them would like to kill me. They can’t. They don’t have that authority. If they did, they’d be in the same position that I’m in right now. But you do. You’ve got that authority. I mean, look at them. They would like to see, you know — their son was killed, you know. I played a part in that. If I hadn’t did what I did, Mark would still be here, he’d still be alive right now. So I’m asking you to do what they can’t do, kill me for what I done. I deserve it. I know it.
I want you to sentence me to death. That’s it.

THE COURT: Mr. Weddle, anything you need to add?

MR. WEDDLE: Nothing further, your Honor.

THE COURT: Mr. Daniels?

MR. DANIELS: No, your Honor.

THE COURT: Mr. Bishop, I’m gonna grant your wish.

DEFENDANT BISHOP: Thank you.
