Network Won't Fire Michael Savage
Newsmax ^ | July 24, 2008 | Staff

Posted on 07/24/2008 1:47:42 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Talk Radio Network, the syndicator of Michael Savage's "Savage Nation" radio show, issued the following statement today:

On Michael Savage's Autism Comments

There have been numerous calls in recent days for Michael Savage, who hosts “The Michael Savage Show” for Talk Radio Network (the “Network”), to be fired or suspended for his brief 84 seconds of commentary concerning autism during the July 16th broadcast of the Show.

Promptly after the Network’s management learned of the comments in issue, the Network commenced an investigation into the particulars and the circumstances of those comments. This investigation began with the Network’s CEO, Mark Masters, personally contacting Dr. Savage to address the concerns and obtain an explanation of the comments directly from Dr. Savage.

In that conversation, and other subsequent conversations between Mr. Masters and Dr. Savage, Dr. Savage explained the circumstances and intent of his statements in considerable detail. The Network also carefully monitored subsequent broadcasts of the Show, on Monday, July 21st and Tuesday, July 22nd, which were devoted to the subject of autism and further explanations by Dr. Savage of his views on the subject.

From the article.....

>>Dr. Savage has clarified that his July 16th statements concerning autism were not directed at those who are in fact challenged by this horrible affliction, but were instead addressing efforts to broaden the concept of autism beyond those who truly are autistic to a broader “autistic spectrum” of behavioral symptoms which are also manifested by persons who do not suffer from autism, and his concern that many children are being misdiagnosed as autistic due to the subjective nature of autism diagnosis (due to the lack of known biomedical indicators, such as blood tests, to definitively confirm or deny the actual existence of autism).

Dr. Savage has also explained his belief that there have been efforts by certain professionals and professional organizations to expand diagnoses of autism more broadly, for various reasons, and his concern that this victimizes and stigmatizes children who are misdiagnosed as autistic. On multiple other occasions Dr. Savage has expressed his concerns that other conditions, such as ADD and ADHD, are overdiagnosed and result in improper medication of young children, which Dr. Savage regards as abusive.<<

I don’t often agree with Savage, but I do on this.
He probably put it horribly wrong as he often does.

"TRN is target number 1 of the Dems...."

If you meant TSN, then I disagree.

The Savage Nation serves the purpose of the DNC so they can point out what liberals have always said about Conservative talk show hosts, which is that they are extremely obscene, say things they know nothing about, constantly scream into the mic, are horribly rude to callers...etc.

I think Levin is on at 11PM here in Austin.

Everytime Weiner steps in it, I lobby the station to either dump Weiner, or switch times with Levin.

Maybe Weiner's pal Moonbeam Brown helped save Weiner's job?

Of course I have. I live in the Austin area, which is much like San Fransisco, i.e., full of whacked out libs and loosertarians.

Your "soprano voice" confirms what I think of many Weiner fans though. You guys are impressed by a tough talking guy with a NY accent eh? That's Weiner's schtick in a nutshell.

Thanks for posting this Vet, you are a great Ameri.. oops wrong show, lol! This is a great article and brilliant response from the CEO of Talkradionetwork who I'm sure came nowhere near the consideration of firing their money maker.

Savage is with the perfect syndicator for him, any lesser network probably would've folded before the pressure, Talkradionetwork owned by the Masters family surely understands the forces that they're dealing with here and promptly assesses the blame for this orchestrated controversy where it truly belongs, Media Matters, haters of all that is good, an organization led by of all things a Sodomite, how appropriate and symbolic.

Nobody was talking about censorship- only government can censor. This was an issue of whether Savage’s comments had pissed off so many people that his network did not want to be associated with him.

Nobody is claiming Mr. Weiner does not have the right to his opinion, however idiotic. But if his employer decided to drop him because his opinions were causing them business problems, that would be their right.

The fact is that he’s right. I have a 21 year old autistic nephew. HE IS AUTISTIC. Today, any child who doesn’t act within the “norm” of how the parents think they should act are labeled ‘autistic.” It’s not only wrong, but it’s devestating for the child who is now labeled for life.

Dr. Savage is not tactful for sure. However medical professionals are sometimes pressured by parents and school official's to upgrade diagnosis to some degree of autism on children who exhibit behavioral/developmental problems. Both parties (parent and school) can then take advantage of federal programs to enhance their cash flow. Another side benefit to both the parent and the school is that in such situations, they can be considered victims and avoid responsibility for working with the child to better his/her condition. That said, true autism is a diagnosis that I would not wish upon any child or family.

Deep, manly voices have always been a staple in radio. They call it a “radio voice”. It is not the fault of TSN fans, Rush fans or any other talk radio personality that Levin does NOT have a voice for radio.

Yes we're definitely impressed with Savage's 'schtick' as you want to call it, as I guess are 400 radio stations and 8-10 million Americans making Savage the 3rd most listened to talkshow host in the country.

Of course the Savage schtick isn't for everyone and that's unfortunate. It's rare these days and refreshing to finally hear someone who doesn't back down from his convictions and apologize in what has become an apology nation where 'apologizing' for offending some group has become the requirement and order of the day.

What are Weiner's convictions? Is it to fund Moonbeam Brown again while still pretending to be a Conservative?

Yes, the gullible always think that "their guy" is "the only one" to "finally hear someone", etc.

The left is in a two way bind here. They want everyone diagnosed with something and drugged in order to have better control of the population and to promote the idea that everyone has to be under the care of Big Brother. At the same time they hate Big Pharma as much as they hate Big Oil and Big Cheese and all other large Capitalist entities.

If all I can do is listen to someone, they should sound good. Most radio personalities (male or female) have voices on the lower end of the spectrum. (One of the reasons I haven’t tried to get into radio.)

A wonderful radio voice is one of the reasons I’m a fan of you know who. ; )

Such a sweet voice too eh?

I love it when someone calls in to say "how are you Dr. Savage". If the caller persists in being nice, Dr. Savage's voice gets sweeter and sweeter right?

How about the time he was fired from MSNBC. He used that "wonderful radio voice" at that time too didn't he?

I should really try and train my ears to the wonderful intonations of someone screaming to the top of their lungs on my car radio.

Thanks for awakening me to that persective.

Savage is, of course, nuts. But why shouldn’t he have the same right to free speech as we all pretend to have? Parents with autistic children have every right to be angry with his remarks, but, surely, there are countless offices and agencies devoted to their cause, offices and agencies that will bombard the media with endless statistics and anecdotes to justify their positions. Why must one man be silenced for saying something that runs contrary to the ‘official line?’ Over the past few years, lots and lots of commentators have said things about America and the current Bush administration that I find both wrong and inflammatory, but, like many Americans, I have held my fire and accepted the fact that people have a right to be nuts and to say so in the public forum.

Levin's monologues are always good. Unfortunately after that, his show is one of the dullest on the air. Levin has perhaps the dumbest callers in radio, and he is clearly irritated by them. It is just awful radio. Savage has superior call screeners, takes fewer calls and they are always well-selected and entertaining or informative.

"Your radio station and Savage are both obviously smarter than you are."

I would challenge the later. If anyone has ever gone to college, they instantly realize that "smarts" don't always translate to "common sense" when dealing with someone who has a PHD. Weiner is a case in point. Sure, he can remember the scientific name for the rare "woogawooga" flower in New Zealand. That's smart. However, saying that "99% of Autism cases..." is just plane stupid, thus lacking in common sense. You would think that a man of "science" would be "scientific". No, he prefers to tickle the ribs of the fawning lemmings who listen intensely to his every word as if it were actually true.

If popularity and money is your measurement of "smart", then I have tons of examples to refute that assertion.

It's idiotic to talk about fake and misdiagnosed autism cases? Dr. Thomas Sowell has spoken of the same problem. Professor Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University is an expert and has also pointed out the problem of misdiagnosed cases.

Obviously they upset everyone also and their respective employers will have to fire them if it harms the institution. Gee, too bad. I'll miss Dr. Sowell

Why is fake and misdiagnosed autism so important to protect?

RE: "extremely obscene"

Savage is extremely obscene? How so?

As for the rest of your calumny I remember the decades of conservatives being screamed at (Racist! Bigot!) everytime they attempted discourse. The conservatives' reaction was to shut up, act servile, and try to explain.

Never again!

Personally I like the way Mark Levin and Michael Savage give it back in kind.

BOTH Levin and Savage have put mediasmatters on notice -- Levin yesterday and Savage at this very moment.
