Obama Has Helped Make His Own Good Luck(I feel suddenly sick)
IBD Editorials ^ | July 24, 2008 | Eugene Robinson

It was as if the fates had conspired to give Barack Obama the kind of foreign affairs photo-op that a campaign manager would only see in his wildest dreams.

Damp, gray Berlin was alive with bright sunshine. A crowd police estimated at more than 200,000 filled the heart of the city. They cheered not only when he talked about global warming or called for a world without nuclear weapons, but also when he spoke of the fight against terrorism and the need for Europe to remain engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right, has become all too common," Obama chided — and Berlin took the admonishment in stride. What were the odds on that?

There has been much comment about the extraordinary luck that has followed Obama's new Boeing 757 around the globe like an escort plane. Indeed, from the Obama campaign's point of view, it would be hard to script a better series of set pieces.

He lands in Afghanistan just as allied commanders and even Bush administration officials endorse his view that more U.S. forces are needed there urgently. He moves on to Baghdad, and Iraqi officials promptly echo his call to set a timetable for U.S. withdrawal. He tiptoes through the minefield of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and somehow comes out unscathed.

After all this good fortune, the Berlin stop became more like a state visit than a political foray. The huge media contingent traveling with Obama, lacking gaffes or controversy to grill him about, was reduced to asking how it felt to be welcomed by cheering multitudes whose hosannas would embarrass a conquering hero.

It would be funny if he won and then found himself unable to really do anything but continue what Bush started.

Eugene Robinson usually writes for one of the Obama News Network dailies - the WaPo or the NYSlime. He has been so unapologetically in the tank for The One that it really is unrealistic to expect him to write anything that could remotely be construed as evenhanded.

Obama does not make his own luck. People like Robinson are trying to create it for him out of thin air.

Eugene you are a flaming idiot! The speech was carp. The crowd was not impressed. There was no “there” there. Obama did not make any luck, this pretentious pompous moment will backfire. HOW IS THAT LUCKY?

A vote for McCain is a vote against Obama!

The sunset at his back was impressive, but his head constantly swiveling right to left and back (to read the teleprompters) was annoying. It was like he was watching a tennis match.

Why are NONE of the news outlets mentioning that they had a free Reggie concert before the anointed one was to speak.

Any bets how many in the crowd came for the free concert?

It would have been fun to see how many would have turned up without the concert...

Lets dispense with this; Obama is a pretentious lightweight

Marcus_Traianus July 24th, 2008 at 8:43 p.m.

Never in the history of Berlin has such a sophmoric, platitude laced speech been made, save when Honecker was still around. Pick up a history and read the text of any great speeches; this doesn’t even rate next to a remarkable donut shop opine.

The headline screams that Obama says we should defeat terrorism together. We tried that and ended up with the check in Iraq (read the UN Resolutions). So instead, while the Europeans were trading food for oil, we were paying with our blood to keep Iraq from becoming another world threat. Meanwhile, they were inviting terrorists into their country, appeasing them, screaming about fallacious rendition while the women wove their armpit hair.

Now Obama wants to, depending on the day, either take credit or say we need to do better; once again demeaning America and her patriots on behalf of world socialism. I say, perhaps their is an opening in Saxony he can run for.

He is getting NO bump in the poles back here where it counts.

He has the MSM along with their ANCHORS controlling what gets seen, orchestrating -

I'm sure the whole team thought this would catapult him to such a lead that he would make history as the one who won the largest margin of any candidate in history.

and not even a bump!

It just may be that the people of the United States are beginning to see through this buffoon...

Methinks they went to far with this one...we need to make sure that his campaign picks up most of the bill. He has admitted it's a CAMPAIGN TOUR. Illegal to take our money to pay for it.

And what about all the coverage and money the MSM are putting out for this dog and pony show. Isn't there something about “Equal Coverage”?

Boy, I can't wait to see all the coverage McCain is going to get to catch up....riighht

Seriously. This is totally unprecedented - even for the MSlimeMedia...How can it stand? They are shills for his campaign. ARe we going to let it ride? If so, we need no more voting. Just let the media tell us who will rule.

The manipulation is amazing. With the Race Card Shield he's almost impenetrable. The biggest chinks in his armour are his stupidity and hubris (excessive pride, self-confidence, arrogance).

I can't wait to order the NOBAMA '08 stickers to put on my truck--next to my (homemade) "Don't Feed the Curb Monkey" sign. Hey, I've had do look at their Obama stickers, now they can look at mine. ;^)

“He lands in Afghanistan just as allied commanders and even Bush administration officials endorse his view that more U.S. forces are needed there urgently.”

Excuse me while I barf, but I dont recall any resounding senate floor or primary debate “We must increase military efforts overseas!” I *DO* recall that he was some sub-committee chairman on Afghanistan and held NOT A SINGLE HEARING. I also note that he was in that country for a grand total of 1/2 hour, hardly time to gather his thoughts, let alone break any new ground.

What is novel to the point of bizarre is how these Obamedia flaks take a position that obama has recently adopted and make it sound like the Bush folks are following his lead, where in reality obama is jumping in front of the parade saying nothing new.

“He moves on to Baghdad, and Iraqi officials promptly echo his call to set a timetable for U.S. withdrawal.”
BS. The American generals hate the idea and said it was wrong. you make decisions based on metrics not rigid timetables; war is not a train schedule!
And the iraqis want any timetable to be on *their* time, not the US time.

“He tiptoes through the minefield of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and somehow comes out unscathed.”
Because he actually did jack-diddly-squat for anyone. Nothing changed. What did he expect, for the palies to spit on him? Didnt this obama foot worshipper not recall how kids on gaza strip are going online to support Obama?!?
And HAMAS ACTUALLY ENDORSED OBAMA??!??!

“Why are NONE of the news outlets mentioning that they had a free Reggie concert before the anointed one was to speak.”

Oh, for the same reason they never mention the free concert that happened in Portland for his other big event. he’s like the half-time filler for the concert.
It’s ALL about Obama.

Did you see his speech earlier today? “This is the moment” for a completely vapid, cliche-ridden speech.

It would have been more substantive if he had just read the lyrics to “We Are The World” from his teleprompter.

Meanwhile TROOPS GET DISSED over the fact that he cant turn a visit into a campaign event:

This trip will backfire:

Another comment on the speech:

-I was nauseated that Obama would present his silly “We are the World” speech in front of a monument to Prussian agressive war victories.
