UPDATE: Obama Campaign Blames Pentagon for Troop Snub in Germany
Thursday, July 24, 2008 | Kristinn

Posted on 07/24/2008 6:59:36 PM PDT by kristinn

The Obama campaign has issued a new statement blaming the Pentagon for Obama's controversial decision to scrap visits to U.S. troops and Rammstein Landstuhl military bases in Germany on Friday.

Der Spiegel initially reported this morning that Obama had cancelled the visits without reason. Then as word spread through the political world after the story was first posted at Free Republic, Obama's campaign issued a statement saying Obama thought it would be "inappropriate" to visit the troops while on a campaign trip.

After the McCain campaign issued a statement upbraiding Obama for snubbing the troops saying that it is never inappropriate to visit troops, Obama's campaign issued a new statement blaming the Pentagon:

"We learned from the Pentagon last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event. Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perveived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go," Maj. Gen. Scott Gration, USAF (Ret), Obama spokesman.

How thoughtful of Sen. Obama.... wouldn’t want injured troops to look like pieces of marxist propaganda meat on display next to the “messiah”.

I can understand his excuse now. Funny how if John McCain were to visit injured troops no one would see it as propaganda. I wonder why?!?

Weaker than you think. The authorities at Landstuhl had a problem with a campaign staffer accompanying the haloed one. That presence would make the visit political. Rather than simply tell the aide to stay behind and go accompanied by senatorial staffers the haloed one bowed out, That’s from a source to NRO from USAF Germany.

Nice try, Major General Gration (ret.)... Where’s attribution to anyone at the Pentagon? If Obama can visit troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and visit the wounded at Walter Reed, why wouldn’t he be able to visitthe wounded in Germany? No, he was working out...

The troops could not attend his political rally, there was nothing to keep him from visiting wounded troops.

So he meant to visit the troops without all his entourage along to record everything?

He was intending to go quietly, without fanfare, and really pay his respects to the troops...

Right.

Hey, obamination, YOU are the one that said it was a CAMPAIGN trip - you could have left your “campaign” behind at the gym and gone without cameras....

You are a disengenuos, self-centered, megalomaniac who sees himself as the leader of the new Marxist world he envisions.

But you might want to be careful. You are only a figurehead for the people pulling your strings - some of who I doubt you are even aware of. If they manage to get you to the WH, you may soon have a rude awakening...you will dance to the tune of your puppet masters...

Paraphrasing from this AP article..........

Obama decided it would be inappropriate to visit the wounded troops on a campaign stop.

Obama made the decision "out of respect" for the troops.

It’s a little more than that: NO PRESS WOULD BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. That is why he didn’t go — he is on his worldwide photo-op tour, so in his mind: screw the troops, give me the photographers.

Again, it sounds like he doesn’t want to campaign for their votes.

Obama apparently can’t figure out a way to have a campaign event with the troops where he won’t just be using them as props.

I’m guessing McCain has no trouble campaigning for the votes of our servicepeople.

My thought exactly, but then, except for a staged photo op, Obama dissed troops in Iraq and Afghanistan also.

Kind of like when Pelosi and the EX-Marine Murtha came to “visit the troops” in Jan of 2007, they pointedly ignored us Soldiers and instead went into conferences with the Dept of State and promptly told the world the US was losing the war without ever leaving a two block area of the Green Zone.

AQ and Al Jezzeria promptly parroted them and renewed some moral among the islamofascists.... Till the surge fully hit.

Obama proves, yet again, that he is a hateful, elitist hack of a Marxist who cares only for himself and the acquisition of absolute power. He despises the US Military as it is a purposeful Constitutional block to this dictatorial power he seeks.

Another reason his “Civilian National Security Force” scares the wits out of me. I already am understanding what he really wants it for. All I am wondering now is what will be the emblem on their red armbands.

Oh, GMAFB!! This guy is a load of hot air, a steaming pile of [whateve!] and just a darn liar.

I read here the visit was canceled because a campaign worker wasn’t allowed to go along. That makes more Obama-sense (new word, can be interchanged with “nonsense”)

As if how the Pentagon feels about it would STOP him?! Like the last few days tossing about in Iraq wasn't campaign theater?!(BS detector going off now.)
But give the guy a little credit: after all, he was "for" visiting the wounded before he was "against" it.

There is no doubt that Obama had his fill of military on this trip. He has got to be totally uncomfortable around the military with his cut and run surrender monkey mentality. The photo ops around the military is too risky with all the faces of soldiers who are unenthusiastic around him.

So when it comes to securing the country he said he will not listen to the Generals because he has a much broader vision and they are just there to get his job done.
Now when he is advised not to make something a campaign stop he suddenly is all obediant to the military.
