Bears besiege Russian mine after killing guards
London Times ^ | June 24,2008 | Tony Halpin

Posted on 07/24/2008 9:16:36 PM PDT by gusopol3

Terrified workers at a mining compound in one of Russia's most isolated regions are refusing to go to work after a pack of giant bears attacked and ate two of their colleagues.

At least 30 of the hungry animals have been seen prowling close to the mines in northern Kamchatka in search of food, where the mangled remains of the two workers, both guards, were found last week.

The co-workers at the compound in the Olyotorsky district are trapped and frightened: the gruesome discovery has left them too scared to venture out. A team of snipers, with orders to shoot the bears, is now being dispatched to confront the invasion after government officials authorised an off-season hunt.

A woman in Caliente CA was attacked this morning or yesterday by a bear while walking her dogs. She made it to her car and made it to some paramedics, leaving the dogs to distract the bear while she slipped away.

(Did Karl Rove forget and leave the seismic/weather machine in ‘Bear Mode’ last night? It’s that little switch down by the headlights...)

These were just displaced Polar Bears trying to find food because all the ice has melted at the North Pole. Don’t blame the bears, it is all due to global warming.

Kamchatka Brown Bears can grow to over ten feet tall and weigh in excess of fifteen hundred pounds. They make the black bears in my neck of the woods look tiny in comparison.

This sounds like something out of Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago”, and it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that those Russian slave labor camps are still operating.

The article, for instance, speaks of “guards”; without indicating any possibility that any “miners” might be armed.

they used to be cute, you’d see them at trash cans in the Smokies, stuff like that. They seem a whole lot meaner now, I guess because there’s a lot less casual contact since the rangers cleaned up the trash, and the way they make the news is invariably tragic

Taking a revolver against a bear is ... not prudent, I say. This rifle, made for hunters, could be more practical:

(link).

To own a gun in Russia you need to hold a hunter's license, and that is a trivial thing to get (involves mostly safety and rules.) Many people in Siberia own and use guns, and this thread clearly shows why. Siberia is a very large place.

PIUTE-CA, at approximately 10 a.m. , on Tuesday July 22, a local resident out walking her 2 dogs was attacked by a bear. Unfortunately one of the dogs was killed; the other was able to escape. The woman received severe lacerations to her head and face in the attack. However, she was able to walk back to her car and drive 3 to 4 miles to the local Kern county Fire Station, Station 78 in Piute.

The fire crew provided medical care to the woman for her injuries. A Medi-Vac helicopter was used to transport the victim to UCLA hospital in Los Angeles.

Kern County Sheriff Deputies and Animal Control Officers arrived on scene to try and identify the exact location of the attack.

I am reminded of a story told to me be a vendor friend of ours some years back. She was a cute thing in her late thirties early 40s at the time. She lived on a 100 acre plot in the White Mountains there in New Mexico. To get to the place took a four hour trek from the trail head to the cabin. Rugged to say the least.

Anyway, she tells us one spring that during the winter, a bear had come through her front door and began coming into the bedroom where she was under the covers at the time. She awoke with the noise of the bear and grabbed a bedside rifle and shot the creature almost point blank.

She said she tried to contact Fish and game or park rangers or who-ever to come and get the carcass, but after three days of no one coming out to her place, she took matters into her own hands and ended up with a bear rug.

I believed the story, she was an Annie Oakley type, but definetly not as homely. There was a guy who fancied himself a Mountain Man and took up with her, but only last a short while because four hours from the trailhead and then a two hour trip to the liqour store after that was too much to be that far from ciggies and booze...

She would tell us how she had to use pack mules to get anything to her cabin...what a gal, wonder what happened to her...

The old forest ranger told me if you're going to use a pistol against a grizzly, you better file down the front sight and the trigger guard.

...... it will make it less painful when the bear takes that gun from you and shoves it up your backside!

Experts argue that a mass slaughter is unnecessary and that the snipers should concentrate on isolating the two or three bears whose tracks were found close to the mutilated bodies of the guards.

How are they supposed to accomplish this feet? (pun intended)
