Who'll Be McCain's Veep? Who Cares?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 2008-07-25 | Ken Khachigian

John McCain's vice presidential running mate selection should be put in perspective. In a presidential campaign, there are only a handful of occasions when a running mate has news value: the day of the announcement and the few days following; the nominee's convention speech debut; the joint kickoff rally; and the televised debate with the counterpart running mate.

Otherwise, by mid-September John McCain's VP choice will be consigned to secondary media markets in critical electoral states, along with tours through solid red states for fund raising, party-building and local-candidate support. National television and cable networks will include the vice presidential nominee in two or three major stories at best. The print media, after a couple of profiles and front page stories (maybe even a magazine cover) will end up producing five-inch blurbs as companion pieces to the coverage of Sen. McCain's tour. And that's about it.

The reality of presidential campaigns is this: Voters don't select the main course based on the side dish. By the first week of October, the race will be about the two principals.

I care because he’ll 72 on Inaugural Day.

My top three choices for VEEP:

#1. Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska

#2. Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota

#3. Bobby Jindal, Governor or Louisiana

Who Cares?

Under more typical circumstances, few would. However, McCain at age 72 and being the oldest ever party nominee makes the VP choice much more significant.

And at the rate McCain's gaffes are piling up, his mental faculties may come more in to question, especially if he is elected and the gaffes become even worse.

Jindal is 36 years old - barely 1 year over the Constitutional requirement to be president. He’s a greenhorn with convienently dark skin.

He has almost NOTHING of a “record” yet.

He may indeed become a rising start within the party, but don’t you think the party ought to let that star rise and shine with a concrete record of accomplishment before pushing him towards the presidential spot?

Besides, Jindal has already said he doesn’t want the job this time around....

The same can be said with Sarah Palin. She has a family to raise, particularly in light of the very recent birth of a very disabled child.

This IS NOT the time to be choosing candidates because of thier skin color or anatomy down below. We need someone with a proven record who is fully capable of stepping into McCain’s shoes if the need arises.

There is already a “president-in-training” named Obama. Let’s leave that to the democrats, OK?

Yeah, Sarah Palin. I think she would rejuvinate the republican base.

I really, really think he needs to pick a woman or a person of color. If he wants to win.

What I fear will happen, is he will pick ole Joe Lieberman, to make a point....and lose like Mondale.

Your title has really swayed the masses. Maybe it should read as follows:

Who cares that I DON'T CARE?

Jindal said no today. Didn’t I hear that?

Lets push for Sarah!

Kay Baily would be good too.

Too bad J.C. Watts couldn’t be picked. Even my racist father said he would vote J.C. in for President! Wonder what ever happened to that guy?

Normally, I’d agree with the WSJ. This election year has been unlike any others, though, and I think this time it will actually matter who McCain picks (due to his age, problems with the conservative base, etc.).

McCain has said what is most important to him is that the VP hold his views, beliefs and ideology. So, I have accepted that I am probably not going to like them anymore than I do McCain.

In regard to this pick a woman or a person of color rhetoric; That just makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean that is all about having a better chance at winning the election, but it shouldn’t be. To me, it is about nothing more than who is best qualified to lead this country should the worst happen.

It is really quite disturbing to hear people talking about this person being able to bring a certain state or demographic to the table. I just want the best available, and whatever sex or race that person is will work for me.

Well I am afraid that letting the democrats to do that, will be letting the democrats have the keys to the Oval office, and begin their cleaning out of the FBI, CIA, federal judgeships, Federal Prosecutors, and put John Kerry in the cabinet. Perhaps as the Secretary of defense.

Wouldn’t that be special.

McCain do you care to be president. We conservative republicans are doing the best we can to get you elected.

DO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT??

IF SO DOOO SOMETHING.

Americans know Obama is running for president but not you.

So far you have done diddly squat.

Do you have a spine? Are you sitting on your brain?

Politics is disturbing.

If things were right, Mr. Hunter would be on the ticket!

That guy just recently made statements extolling the wonderfulness of Big Ears and leaving many of us in doubt who he would be voting for this year. Kay Bailey, knifed us in the back on the fence. It is now in the Hands of Homeland Security director and who knows who that will be a year from now. Not that the current head is all that great.
