Nightmare result for [PM] Gordon Brown as SNP triumph over Labour in Glasgow East
The Times ^ | 7/25/2008 | Philip Webster, Political Editor and Angus Macleod

Posted on 07/24/2008 11:41:19 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

Gordon Brown’s worst nightmare was realised early today as the Scottish National Party triumphed by taking Glasgow East, one of Labour’s safest seats.

The hopes of Labour strategists that their disastrous run of electoral setbacks was about to end were dashed as the SNP’s John Mason achieved the enormous 22 per cent swing required to topple the long-time stronghold.

Mr Mason, a Glasgow councillor, overturned a 13,507 Labour majority at the general election in 2005 to win by 365 votes from Labour’s Margaret Curran. Turnout was just over 42 per cent. Earlier in the day, Labour had requested a recount, which delayed the result being announced by around an hour.

In his victory speech Mr Mason described the result as "not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale. It is an epic win, and the tremors are being felt all the way to Downing Street”.

He added: "We have removed the dead hand of Labour control."

Mrs Curran admitted that the Labour Party had to listen to the voters. “I do believe the Labour Party has to listen and has to hear the message from the people of Glasgow East," she said.

While Mr Brown is not under immediate threat, it was the worst possible result as he prepares for a summer holiday and tries to chart a plan for his own and Labour’s recovery.

The result will intensify doubts among Labour MPs about Mr Brown’s ability to win a general election and could spell trouble at Labour’s conference in the autumn when a weakened Prime Minister will have trouble getting his way on a range of policy issues.

Although given the ideology of Labour vs. SNP, it wouldn’t be like Pelosi being replaced by a Republican, but by Greenie moonbat Cindy Sheehan.

Yeah. I can smell Brown’s stench from clear across the pond. He is nothing but a fascist socialist’s toadie. He was ramming through the EU agenda without the consent of the people.

A comment at The Times to this article:

"Best for Scotland, best for Scotland's people, best all round.

On the basis of this swing the next election would deliver, 50 SNP, 1 Labour MP, 0 Tory and 1 Libdem MP."

Are you sure? I’m not keen on who’s who in that part of the world.

If so, then it’s like an “out of the frying pan and into the fire” kinda thing. You’d figure people in the UK would be fed up with their country’s Christian culture and traditions being erased and replaced with Islamic appeasement and the rapid erosion of their freedom of speech, not to mention loss of sovereignty and rule.

Yep - you got the real situation summed up. this will hasten Scottish Socialist Independence. The SNP are no friends of conservatives, freedom or business.

From the UK: Yep this is frying pan into the fire stuff. The SNP are left of Labour..... and this will hasten the break up of the UK. As we used to say “ A pox on both their houses”

If Scotland becomes independent, it will have a bad government. On the other hand it will be difficult for Labour to win a majority in the British Parliament without its Scottish seats. A net plus IMHO.

Although I’m 1/4th Scot and it’s almost genetic the feeling/yearning for “muh people” to be free from the English, I know full well the only people to benefit from Independence won’t be the Scottish... it’ll be the English. A prime example of “be careful what you wish for... you might get it.”

That's a very good comparison actually, only very recently the SNP helped setup and fund the Scottish Islamic foundation with a £215,000 grant from it's ministers.......

Yes, any blow for Labour is a good one at the moment but trading them in for the SNP is like divorcing Whitney Houston and then marrying Amy Whinehouse when you know deep down you should have married Keira Knightley.

The satisfaction is not that a unilateral nuclear disarming, EUrotopia loving, Scotish separatist won. It is that Labour lost one of its safest seats and must suffer the humiliating press.

The election was about "change" and in this case, they don't even want the stuff left in their pockets...

Concisely put.

I can’t wait for Scotland to become independent. England would become majority Conservative overnight AND would no longer bear the cost of Scottish welfare (Scotland is a net money sink, even if all oil receipts are attributed to Scotland.)

I have been fascinated by reading the Daily Mail and a few other papers. The Readers' Comments finally show an amazing amount of outrage. They are taking out the trash, and if Disney ran Goofy as a candidate over there, he'd win.

Council taxes, Dustbin police, Revenue cameras, The NHS Scandal of The Day, Yobs killing out of boredom, Burglars' Rights, and paralyzed Police, it just never stops.

Of course, I doubt things will get much better replacing Labour with non-Thatcherite Tories. The new London Mayor Boris Johnson is certainly not much of a prize so far. The UK badly needs leadership with real balls... balls enough to start running the Dark Age hordes out of the country before it truly is too late.

I think there is still hope. I spent a lot of time in England and still miss it, and have been reading the papers for years. I have never seen so much fury from the Real People as in the last year or so, or so much abuse from a Government there.

A few more years of this without some kind of correction, and their "leadership" should fear for their very lives.

The Scots have the luxury of full on liberalism right now because they are not in control. If they actually become an independent nation it won't take long to figure out that an actual far-left national government is better in theory than practice.

Really? I understand why we would hope that were true. But what is it about the modern UK that makes you think that would be anywhere remotely the case?

It's not Dickensian Christmas over there anymore than it is here in America. We can't have bibles within 150 feet of a school or a courtroom...why do you think it has been better over there?

And "tired of" secularism doesn't really make sense.

Conservatism -is- tiredness. It is the opposite of activism, such as pointed out by Russell Kirk in "The Conservative Rout."

The least common denominator is the least amount of conflict within a society, and a "Christian culture" with huge airports and immigrant traffic by it's very tolerant nature will dissolve down into non-confrontational PC-isms allowing gay, muslim, secular activists to take the unopposed lead.

Where Great Brtain goes, we will soon be.

Let me say it this way.

Losing conservatism is like losing virginity and youth by degrees.

Once it’s gone, it’s gone, baby!

There can be no “Conservative Revolution” through backlash. That is activism as shown in 1994’s “Contract with America” petering out into same-old-same-old government-centric progressivism and more spending.

They may be fed up with it, but if the Christians DON’T run for office, if they DON’T show up to vote en masse, if they DON’T bloc-vote and support their candidates, if they LET themselves get infiltrated and undermined by liberal socialists, and if they just basically hide their heads in the sand while the country that THEY BUILT is subverted, well, what else do they expect?

Same here in this country. When good men run for office, they need to be supported, fought for, and defended.

Instead we let our people get run out - Tom Delay, John Ashcroft, John Bolton, Rick Santorum, etc.,

And we’re left with Pelosi and Reid...and OComma...

1. The UK is VERY secular, and folks who are openly religious are looked upon as rather "queer."

2. Islam threatens the SECULAR culture of the UK, which has had enough of wars over religion to the point of rejecting religion altogether.
