Denver, CO (AHN) - Republican nominee Bob Schaffer and Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) are tied in the race for the seat of retiring Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO), according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
Schaffer and Udall are in a dead heat at 44 percent each. One percent of voters declared their support for other candidates and 11 percent were undecided.
Schaffer has closed a 10-point deficit since last month, when he trailed 38 percent to 48 percent. Pundits are attributing his rise to increased support for offshore oil drilling, which the former Republican congressman supports.
Fifty-nine percent of Colorado voters support drilling in protected offshore areas, while 37 percent oppose the idea and 4 percent are undecided. Less voters, however, were supportive of coastal exploration in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, with 52 percent of voters approving of the idea, 44 percent rejecting and 4 percent unsure.
Quinnipiac University Polling Institute Assistant Director Peter Brown says results in Colorado as well as three other swing states "show increased support for additional drilling."
Schaffer's gain from the growing support for coastal oil exploration promises to make the race, which Congressional Quarterly has rated as "leans Democratic," more competitive. Schaffer currently trails Udall in fund raising, and has been beleaguered by controversies surrounding his reported ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and his support for a widely panned energy plan backed by President George W. Bush.
Here’s your answer
This can’t be. I just heard on MSNBC that Obama is cruising to victory and that the RATs will sweep every single contest this November.
Go Schaeffer...
Every Republican pol should adopt this phrase:
"(My Democrat opponent) won't open new oil fields to end the fuel crisis. I will."
Although I have quit donating to the RNC, I have been donating to the Schaffer campaign.
Does anyone know if Mark Udall of CO any relation to Tom Udall in NM?
Drill here, drill now, drill the tree hugging morons. They are a bunch of cornered rats on this issue and they can’t escape from it. Unless, of course, the Republicans set them free.
Conservatism still sells.
Do you happen to have a link to his site? I’ve been scattering small donations to just this kind of candidate—
Now we need for Sen Sununu to bounce back in NH, Sen Wicker to remain ahead in MS. Looks like Sen Coleman is gaining. If these guys win I will shed no tears if Sens Humphrey or Collins lose, though the latter seems to be ahead. Unfortunately VA is a lost cause, and most analysts say NM cannot be won.
All the Udall's in politics in western states are relatives. They are a big Mormon family. Senator Gordon H. Smith (R - OR) is also related to the Udalls.
Coleman has been consistently ahead I had thought.
Senator Hubert Humphrey or Gordon Humphrey?? I assume you meant Sununu since Gordon Humphrey was from NH. Ha ha.
Oops I was getting the Gordons mixed up! I meant Gordon SMITH of Oregon. We could use Gordon Humphrey back now. The way NH is going down the drain I think Sen Judd Gregg probably will be in trouble next time unless Obama is president and the Dems are in decline. If Sen Sununu manages to eke out a comeback victory this year then maybe it means NH hasn’t completely gone over to the dark side.
Coleman’s lead has been increasing but it was very tight for a while. At least one poll had Franken ahead but that was a while ago. Maybe Coleman was lucky the ran Franken and not a more electable Dem.
Hello!!
Excellent news! Rasmussen Reports also has Schaffer gaining ground.
I have a feeling there will be more nonsense at the DNC shindig in Denver than the good people of Colorado can tolerate. The convention could come back to bite the Democrats in the rear.
Schaffer needs $$ ! Udall is a Boulder moonbat and needs to be fully exposed as such (as should his cousin, the Santa Fe moonbat).
This IS very good news. Udall shouldn’t even be close, but then, neither should Obama!
For Coloradans, this should be a no brainer.
Perhaps a bit early, but do we have anybody warming up in the bullpen to challenge the no-brained moonbat Auggie Ritter in 2010 ?
Funny, Mormon and Dem from the western states just doesn’t add up.
I think Bill Ritter can be beaten in 2010. The list of names mentioned for challenging Ritter is growing. Could be one of three former Senator’s -— Bill Armstrong, Hank Brown or Wayne Allard. Former Congressman Scott McInnis and former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton have also been mentioned. Along with Pete Coors, again.
Good chance Bill Owens may take on Ken Salazar for Colorado’s Senate seat in 2012. I think Owens can win too.
Salazar’s seat is up in 2010, not 2012.
Good news, but NM is firmly for the other Udall.
Bill Armstrong would be great, but the only downside is that he’ll be 73 in 2010 (and not too many individuals begin their Gubernatorial careers past the age of 70). Heaven forbid if Schaffer comes up short this year, he should be the #1 choice.
My problem with McInnis is his bizarre behavior in ‘04, first acting as though he was going to run for the Senate and then opting not only not to run for that, but dropping out of the House race, which allowed both Salazar brothers to waltz to both offices.
Pete Coors will never be ready for office and his recent DUI is more evidence of that.
As for Owens, it’s doubtful I could have a lower opinion of this guy. There’s little question this guy managed to make the decades-dominant state GOP the minority party and paved the way for the lying slimeball Auggie Ritter. It’s amazing at one point I considered him potential Presidential material, but watching his escapades for 8 years disavowed me of that notion. I don’t want to see him run for any office ever again. He shouldn’t be rewarded for his failures any more than that certain ex-Gov from Massachusetts.
Pearce is wealthy, and he needs to unleash his resources against the “other” Udall. The latter has really never faced a tough opponent in his career.
He also had youthful ties to “Fort Worthless” Jim Wright.
