The Democratic Party that existed during my childhood and through early adulthood bore little or no resemblance to what it has become. In earlier times being a Democrat identified one as a proud, God-inspired American with intense traditional values, true love of country, belief in a strong, cohesive family unit, hard work, self-reliance, dedication to constitutional norms, equality and respect for others.
Today, however, the party I once knew seems to say forget religious beliefs, forget the right to defend one's self, forget about hard work, just let working taxpayers provide, and disavow longheld moral decency standards as being irrelevant in today's world.
The sad fact is that the Democratic Party has abandoned so many of us. That courageous, honorable breed of genuine statesman is vanishing within the party of apathetic voters.

A good explanation for my handle.
How old is this guy? 100?
In my 60+ years on this planet, the Democrat Party NEVER identified one as a proud, God-inspired patriotic American with traditional values and appreciation for strong cohesive families. What planet has this guy been living on?
Now that's a very good question.
Many people were “traditional” democrats; they were democrats because everyone in their family, town and county had always been democrats. This applies mainly to rural and working-class (not welfare-class) neighborhoods. They believed this is what their party stood for because this is what their local political figures told them and probably what the US Congressman said he stood for (since, after all, he did want to be elected).
Now, with access to the internet, some independent-minded folks are no longer swallowing the garbage that was once spoon-fed to them. They are thinking on their own, and see the democrat party as home to everything they abhor.
We need more people like that, frankly.
One wears the American pin proudly.
Jumping the Shark - 1972 DNC
Jumping the Shark - 2008 RNC
The sane versions of these parties have left the building.
This guy must be older than dirt. I’m 52 and can’t remember a time when the Democrat Party ever had any redeeming value.
It’s a little tougher for me - “Never a Democrat, never in my life have I voted for a “D”, and I am 65.. my first presidential vote was for Barry Goldwater.
The Democrats have become the party of every deviant group you can name, plus the anti-war crowd.. but I repeat myself.
The Repub’s are becoming difficult to vote for too, so it is getting quite difficult to find candidates one can back. Fortunately I have a great congresswomen (Michele Bachmann). I had to move into her district to get her as my rep, but higher on the ticket is a bit of a quandary.
Well, for now, they convene in different cities, and at different times.
The article is from Belleville, Illinois. Here in Illinois there is little difference. Springfield has a protective dome sponsored by both parties known as "The Combine". It matters not which party you are in, as long as you are "in", nothing will happen. The Illinois GOP is nearly extinct, and certainly NOT conservative.
Well, for now, they convene in different cities, and at different times.
Oh, and they're represented with different colors on maps during election time...
And then there's the difference between the letters "D" and "R". That's a HUGE difference between "D" and "R". Count fer yerself.
Besides, everyone knows the traditional Democrat party just believed in the three R's: Rebellion, Romanism, and Rum.
Marxist = Democrat
Evolutionary Marxist = Republican
That’s about it.
The last great Democrat (President) was Grover Cleveland, IMO. Ever since then the party has been the epitome of socialism and leftism.
I second that. There were always leftist wackos in the party, but forty years ago they were on the fringe. Now they're the mainstream.
I will agree to that. They were the fringe that WE discounted, ignored, and failed to defend against.
Here we are now, today, in the battle for the republic with the ‘fringe.’
“applies mainly to rural and working-class (not welfare-class) neighborhoods”
As a kid, growing up in rural Michigan (on a 200 acre farm), I was surrounded by the people you just described.
They were farmers, factory workers, construction workers, and mechanics.
They were also blue collar democrats, pro union.
We spent Friday night in the local tavern (kids were welcome).
We went to church on Sunday - you went to church on Sunday (not being seen at church was not an option).
We said grace at the dinner table.
Everyone in that town had a flag on their front porch (welfare and unemployment was there as a safety net, but your reputation depended on getting off it as quickly as possible - it was a blow to your pride to be on it).
Some were drafted - many joined - men served their country - there was something wrong with you if you didn’t.
On the fourth of July everyone celebrated.
I talk to my Aunts and Uncles back in that small town today — they are confused, they don’t know what happened to the once proud party.
Today Democrats don’t stand for what they stand for. They don’t support gay’s, they don’t support abortion on demand, they love God and Worship God, they hunt, they fish and most of them still drive American “ONLY” cars, they honestly don’t give a “F” what the French think about them...and they are not embarrassed to say it out loud.
I know your people. Some of my relatives, after much persuasion on my part finally saw the light and voted for Bush - strong on defense rules the day with all of them now.
They want their jobs back - that’s what they want.
