WASHINGTON (July 25, 2008) A new analysis by the Center for Immigration Studies of monthly data collected by the Census Bureau shows that the illegal-immigrant population has declined significantly between last summer and May of this year. The study is the first to find quantitative evidence that illegal-immigrants are leaving the country. It also examines the extent to which stepped-up enforcement and the downturn in the economy account for this trend.....
The Center will formally release the report at a press conference on Wednesday, July 30th at 2:30 pm in room 1309 of the Longworth House Office Building. The reports lead author, Dr. Steven Camarota will be joined by Representatives John Barrow (D-GA), Lamar Smith (R-TX), Tom Feeney (R-FL) and Heath Shuler (D-NC) to discuss the implications of the study.

Decline? Maybe... Enough? No, not even. No way in cowboy hell enough. When I can see no groups of illegals outside the Home Depot, Quick Trip, Racetrac, et al, then it will be enough, maybe....
Excuse me?
We do not even know how many illegals are here.
We are given figures between 12 million and 20 million.
So if we do not know how m,any are here how can we tell that the number is declining?
Don’t worry. They’ll be back when McCain is president.
They’re probably all here already.
The Powers That Be in Phoenix and Arizona are doing their best to hike the numbers back up. They are cutting Sheriff Arpaio’s funds and filling the local media with charges of racism. The ACLU is filing suit.
“It also examines the extent to which stepped-up enforcement and the downturn in the economy account for this trend.....”
Stepped up enforcement is not effective in a nation that refuses to secure its border since those deported are likely to just return.
As far as the downturn in the economy accounting for this trend......IOW, we have to wait until the U.S. sucks as much as Mexico does before we no longer have an illegal alien problem I guess.
Seems like the economy of Mexico should be doing great. They have, after all, tons of cheap labor. This is what we keep getting told we need so much more of. That it’s the ticket to making our country even richer. Heck, Mexico is a beautiful country with all those beaches and beautiful deserts. It has a ton of natural resources including oil. All of that in addition to the unlimited supply of cheap labor....heck they should be the richest country on the planet.
My son lives off of Pleasantdale. I was at the Quick Trip there about 3 weeks ago and I thought I had been transported to Mexico. They were standing around everywhere, at least 80 of them. They haven’t left Georgia yet no matter what they say.
Blue Dog RATS are still RATS! They enable Obama and the rest of the herd of commies.
Decline?
You mean there are only 40 million now instead of 45 million?
It is going to be very hard to trace the demographic movement of illegals, because there are all sorts of possibilities for them.
To start with, the illegal flow into the US is to a great extent media as well as word of mouth driven. When the word South of the border is “don’t bother”, most illegals won’t try.
Those who have just been here a short time are inclined to return, but most mixed families, with legal and illegal members, won’t. They already have too much at stake, and do not want their Americanized children to suffer by going to the “foreign country” of Mexico. Nothing there to attract them for a better life.
Their alternatives are either to stay underground and work in cash only jobs, or have the legal members of the family support the illegal ones (several techniques for doing this.) Crime will appeal to many, mostly drug dealing and prostitution.
While trying to root them out and force them to go to Mexico may be emotionally gratifying, it will do little other than to force many otherwise honest people underground, and make them more susceptible to criminals seeking to exploit them.
Again, in mixed families, the illegal members will not ask the legal members to go to Mexico with them, but will work very hard to come back to the US to rejoin their families. Short of going through the decades long legal immigration process, which is not a serious means to enter the US from Mexico.
Oh, you mean like when our current leaders and politicians publicly encourage people to illegally enter this country?
Not around here. And every single Latina over 16 I see has a baby—inside or out. Every one.
In Central Jersey, I don't see the numbers going down in large numbers, but I don't see them increasing either like I did from 1994-2000 or 2002-2004.
It works both ways, and is also heavily influenced by the Mexican newspapers.
A lot of the surge of illegals North happened because of the Plan Puebla Panama. Their idea was to turn southern Mexico into a major travel and transport hub. But to do this, they had to kick out the people living there.
So they told them to head North and take jobs in the factories just South of the border, or better, go to the US for a new life.
But that was then. Today, the odds favor illegals heading back to Mexico and not being replaced. But US law is only due partial credit.
The Mexican birthrate has plummeted to about 2.3 children per family. And this means that the illegal problem is to a great extent going to cure itself.
There will be a strong decline in illegal entries, just because there will be fewer extra Mexicans.
Illegal populations have not declined.
Instead, illegals are just getting better at hiding, or getting better fake ID, because they realize that society no longer accepts them carte blanche.
I'm in Heath Shuler's district and I see no decrease in illegal aliens here. They are still crawling all over this place, 24/7.
Try a drive through Smyrna. There is a place, Belmont Shopping Center...the strip behind the mall looks like Tijuana. The illegals are everywhere there. The only thing rooting them out is that the older housing was getting bought up for Yuppie renovations extending from ‘Vinings’. Smyrna is a city overwhelmed with a new high tax base and a very high illegal population. I am hoping they get pushed off somewhere else (BTM - back to Mexico).
You have actually made part of my underlying point.
A little background, first.
I did not post the press release because I endorse its conclusion, that immigrants are leaving.
I posted it because Center For Immigration Studies is the leading Conservative think tank on immigration issues, and they wrote it.
The full study has not been released, and I suspect the number of immigrants who have left is quite modest.
The point CIS is trying to make is that even halfhearted enforcement of existing laws will force immigrants to “deport themselves.”
My main point was that Heath Shuler, a Democrat, had aligned himself with a Conservative think tank on the immigration issue.
If you listen to McCain or the Wall Street Journal or the Chamber of Commerce, strict immigration enforcement is a LOSING issue for Republicans.
In fact, every Democrat who runs in a Conservative district has adopted the Conservative position on immigration.
By the way, I used to pack Booty Brand apples outside of Hendersonville in the early 70’s, and half the workforce was Mexican way back then.
Is the current immigration issue based on agricultural workers who have overstayed their visas, or is something else going on that part of North Carolina?
bump
Not in my town in NC. I was at the Lowe’s Foods yesterday. as were 2 buss loads of Mexican men. Usually they are there on Sat, I was surprised to see them on Fri.
A good many of them still are ag workers, but I have no idea if they overstayed their visas or never had any. My guess is, many never had any. It is no problem getting phony ID showing you are anybody you want. They could even get NC driver's licenses just by taking a rent receipt showing "residency" and applying at the DMV.
I have lived here 10 years and their numbers only seem to increase and they get bolder - in your face, even, as they feel increasingly entitled to living, working and collecting all kinds of benefits and medical care here. Their involvement in drug rings and gangs is on the increase as well. Some sport prison tats and are also likely hard core gang members.
This isn't quite the place you remember fondly from the '70s. It's more edgy than it was even when we moved here. I suppose it's like that everywhere except places like Oklahoma where they have decided to do something about the problem.
This article is lying.
Go to any public place here and you’ll see so many of these people you’d swear you’re in Tijauna. And the women have 4-6 kids in tow - almost always!
