In a magazine interview Obama and his wife Michelle revealed that one of their steadfast house rules is not giving Christmas or birthday presents to Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven.
The couple explained that they spend "hundreds" on birthday slumber parties and want to "teach some limits". Santa Claus is still permitted to deliver seasonal gifts however.
The girls are also given an allowance of just $1 (50p) a week for performing household chores, according to People magazine. Those chores include making their own bed, setting and clearing the dinner table and putting themselves to bed by 8.30pm.
On the campaign trail, Mr Obama has often spoken of the need for Americans to be "better parents" who aren't afraid to "turn off the TV".
He has also exhorted black males to be more responsible fathers.
Though he has been away "98 per cent of the time", Mr Obama told People that before the campaign he did "the house and car repairs, the grocery shopping" and "sometimes the laundry".

Wow.....one of my greatest joys is shopping for my kids birthdays and Christmas. You don’t have to get them a ton of stuff, and before Christmas and birthdays we make sure to go through everything and give stuff away.
And what’s with having your kids put themselves to bed? They seem a little young for that.

I’m really a bit surprised that he told the media this. Its so oddball that its one of those little things that can hurt a candidate because people can’t relate to it and think that its, well...odd.

That’s why he bought a $1.6 million house — And Rezko’s wife had to buy the lot next door ON THE SAME day -— she paid FULL PRICE and Obama got a $300,000 discount on his house.

It sounds like the girls get very expensive parties for their birthdays, rather than gifts. And "Santa" gives presents at Christmas, rather than Mom and Dad. Since he spends "hundreds" on the parties, it doesn't sound like a frugal policy to me.

In many African cultures, the day a child is born is not observed as a special day. Instead, when African children reach a certain age, they are initiated into the community ...this is when they learn the laws, beliefs, customs, songs and dances of their tribes... celebrated for groups of children instead of individual children.

Picking up behind yourself and helping around the house (without compensation) was expected of anyone living under our roof. It’s called being a part of a family. I can’t picture my parents giving 7 kids money for making our beds. Old school parenting rules!

Obama Christmas greeting:
Best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their own religion as well as those who choose not to practice religion at all. Plus, a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of the other cultures whose contributions have helped make our society great, without regard to age, race, creed, color, religion, national origin, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

A bit odd I think. Jehovah Witnesses' don't give birthday and Christmas gifts either...
I think we can rule out them being JW's.
Does anyone know what the practice of birthday/Christmas gifts is with Mooseslimes?
They also don't have a dog - not everyone does - especially mooseslimes that detest dogs as unclean, something not even to be touched.
I'd love to see someone, instead of holding up a baby to be touched by the anointed one - a puppy.

I was just out cutting the grass, its 97 out there and I was seating my arse off.
Some black guy comes riding up on a bicycle and wants to know if I have some change so he can buy potato chips.
He doesn’t ask if I have some work he can do. he just wants to interrupt my work to ask for a hand out.
I told him “Obama has some change”
Perhaps I mislead the lazy sap. ;)

Yeah - that’s so much better than the “thousands” most Americans spend on birthday slumber parties. I don’t think their kids are going to get the message.

I put myself to bed starting at 8 or 9 but that’s not the point. Obama is just another hypocrite, as is his entire party.

Sen. Barack Obama kicks a soccer ball to his 10-year-old daughter Malia and, with a wink to a reporter on the sidelines, confides one of his wife Michelle’s secret talents: “She is the best Hula-Hooper I know. Once she gets the rhythm going, she can drop to her knees!”
PEOPLE: Someone told me today that you don’t do birthday presents.
Michelle: No, because we spend hundreds of dollars on a birthday party and movie tickets and pizza and popcorn ...
Barack: That sleepover is enough. We want to teach some limits to them. And their friends bring over presents.
Michelle: They get so much stuff that it just becomes numbing. Malia believes there is still a Santa Claus even though she’s a little wary because some of her friends are non-believers. But Malia says, “Ma, I know there is a Santa because there’s no way you’d buy me all that stuff.” [Laughing]

"they spend "hundreds" on birthday slumber parties..."Expensed against the campaign funds, I'm sure. Couldn't do that with their gifts. Didn't he just drag one of his daughters to Montana for her birthday? That was all for her, right? Everything is about him, Michelle, and his campaign.
To: Anti-Bubba182
Not buying your kids birthday presents? That is beyond strange. What did he have kids for to be photo ops and do the things his wife didn’t want to do. Being 10 and 7 and in charge of putting themselves to bed? Not at my home when the kids were younger.
No CHRISTMAS presents and he professes to believe in the Church of Christ? Excuse me while I BARF!

Your post reminds me why I love my wife. After the riots downtown in 2001 and the Clintons Mrs Stan Chesley Federal Judge’s resulting total emasculation of the Cincy Police, panhandlers absolutely ruled. Anyway, one night we went to a nice restaurant downtown and because nobody dared to go downtown in that atmosphere, we parked right in front of the place. As we got out of the car a very well fed fellow immediately accosted us for money for “food”. Without missing a beat my wife opened the backdoor of the car and grabbed an opened but large bag of potato chips and presented them to him. He actually became disoriented and mute, and as we entered the restaurant he put the chips in a garbage can.
