IN THE first six months of this year an increasing number of South Africans considered or decided to migrate to Australia.
As a result, a wide range of businesses is booming.
While few firms can give exact figures, they are all sure of one thing: demand is high. One says most inquiries it gets are from Afrikaners.
Immigration lawyers, airlines, travel agents, removal companies and pet-relocation companies have benefited.
The Australian high commission in Pretoria said that while no figures were available yet on how many South Africans had settled in Australia so far this year, 3996 relocated there last year, with total visitor numbers reaching 149000.
David Randall, marketing manager of Pentravel, said inquiries and bookings of aircraft flights to Australia were up about 30% on last year.
Demand was so high that the travel group secured a special immigration fare from Qantas airline. It is not only the sales of one-way fares that have increased, but tickets for people making exploratory visits to Australia, said Randall.
Our flights between SA and Australia have been operating at very high load factors this year, says Michaela Messner, African manager for Qantas. The airline operates five flights to both Sydney and Perth each week, with plans to add an additional flight to Sydney in December due to demand for more seats.
Robbie Ragless, regional manager for immigration agency Global Visa SA, said there had been a huge rise in the number of inquiries in the first six months of the year from South Africans wanting to relocate.
Most inquiries are from the Afrikaans community and young families looking for a safe environment to bring up their children, said Ragless.

Way back when the Republic of South Africa was the last confessional Christian nation, I taught myself some Afrikaans as a gesture of solidarity. Then, they decided to trade in Jesus for the opportunity to participate in international sports — and today, abortion and sodomy are both “rights,” while the savages fresh out of the bush are cannibalizing the results of centuries of painful effort.
gee, why not go to England?
They are of dutch blood. BAD feelings left over from Boer Wars with the British.
There was nothing Christian about apartheid.
There were 16,000 australian troops in the boer war
Thank you for saying it. I second that.
“There was nothing Christian about apartheid.”
True. But same can be said for abortion, sodomy, and the communists who took over.
Too bad we can’t let more of them into the US. These are some of the most productive and self-reliant folks in the world. And they still believe in having kids, which is where most of our fellow native-born Americans are shirking their duty.
bunches of them came to TX...

Have met a few that cam eout from Zimbabwe a few years back - very nice fellows untl you got onto the subject of race. I can understand their bitternes towards the Zimbabwe Government but seeing their attitudes towards ‘blacks’ I wondered whether they may have gone some way in fostering the hatred brought down upon them.
Mel
They did spend 500 or so years creating one of the only decent places on the continent for someone else to live in, now that was Christian, at least give them that.

Agreed; but there was nothing Christian about the ANC (Communist), necklacing (killing someone by putting a diesel-soaked tire about their neck and setting it alight), property seizures and violent home invasions either.
And it is now a far worse place for everyone than it was under apartheid; it thus follows that while evil, it was not the greatest evil.
They did provide a safe and productive environment in Africa. There are more murders and violence there now - not very Christian.
If it was me, I'd be gettin' the flock off that continent, as well...
My boss is one. I totally agree. He lives in Canada. We don't want educated immigrants coming here!
You meant you would be getting the f**k off the continent.
The Afrikaners had two choices:
1. They could have eliminated the local population like the Australians did.
2. They could have built a just and fair society like the Americans and Canadians.
They did neither and they had 350 years to do so. Let them flee.
To broker the "new South Africa," the British financial interests played the same game they'd played in Europe, of bankrolling the weaker party for century after century. They went over the heads of the largest (predominantly Christian) white tribe, and the largest (predominantly Christian) black tribe, to make the second-largest white and black tribes the main players ins the new regime.
Netherlands disowned the Afrikaners. Remember they were stuck on the dark continent for hundreds of years without contact from their "ancestral homeland".
Interesting comment. It shows that the situation in the “old” South Africa was much more complicated than those of us who have only observed from a distance ever knew.
Another thread here at FR describes the amount of white poverty and homelessness in the “new” South Africa. Many would probably like to get but have no money.
You are assuming the Americans, Canadians, Australians and Afrikaners had identical situations and all the choices were equally possible or attractive.
The choices being made today by the current regimes in Africa seem far worse than those made by the above countries.

I am tired of hearing this “Apartheid was good for the uneducated African savages” crap.
Nobody likes to live under domination. Americans fought against British domination and built the greatest nation on earth.
Everyone accepts that Africa has serious issues, but to suggest that Apartheid was justifiable is patent nonsense. To suggest that colonialism and the rape, pillage, racism and “divide and rule” that came with it is justifiable is also nonsense.
Every human being has the right to be free. What they decide to do with their freedom is another issue. If Africans have decided to squander their freedom, then that does not negate the principle of freedom for all.
Starvation, rape and necklacing is better?
From the way you talk you probably know little about Africa apart from rehashed talking points and stereotypes. Let me educate you, I am African.
First the sum total of our existence in Africa is not starvation, rape and necklacing. For all our faults we don’t cherish the idea of serving our European masters ‘gin and tonic’ - ever again. I am glad that my career choices are not limited to Admin Clerk, Cook, Cleaner, Primary School Teacher, Labourer or Driver.
Since you belong to the “Africa was better under Apartheid, Colonialism and Ian Smith” school of thought - you should take it to its logical conclusion. I take it that you must agree with a certain Mr. Putin that Russia was better under Soviet rule because Krushchev sent Gagarin to space, the literacy rate was higher, the mortality rate was lower, salaries were paid regularly and housing was more comprehensive. You must agree that all American effort towards ending Communism was misplaced because Russia descended into chaos under Yeltsin, the average life expectancy for Russian males dropped drastically, Russia descended into mob violence and crime.
Please follow me.
You must also accept that a Communist Authoritarian China is superior to democratic India because the Chinese GDP per capita is three times higher than that of India and growing. Because Shanghai resembles a scene from blade runner while Mumbai is an open sewer.
You must also accept that the American drive to secure freedom for the Iraqi people was misplaced because the American backed Maliki regime is less competent than the Saddam regime in providing electricity, water and sewage treatment. You must accept that American troops are wasting their time in Iraq because women are less free in Iraq today than they were under Saddams rule, because Iraqi Christians are being massacred on an almost daily basis, because the average Iraqi school child worries about being blown up on the way to school.
The thing that sets America apart from colonial powers like Britain and France this century is America’s commitment towards spreading freedom. Some nations like Germany, Japan and South Korea make good use of that freedom, some others don’t.
The cause for freedom is just and despite the problems that Africa is experiencing, the seeds of freedom will grow and blossom in God’s good time.
Comparing Ian Smith and Mugabe is like comparing Hitler and Stalin. It is pointless.
(I will talk about colonialism in another post).
God bless Africa (Nkosi sikeleli Africa).
It’s a good thing that you are happy with your country. It is rich in resources and has the potential to be great.
According to Wikipedia, however, South Africa ranks as number one for rapes per capita, surpassing all other countries. It ranks number two for murder.
While *your* life may have greatly improved, it appears it has become worse for others. Do you see any end to the violence?
I went to secondary school (you call it High School in the States) with young girls and boys from Southern Africa. I was 11 years old in 1985 and there was this young girl (my classmate) from Southern Africa - her name was Emmy Shikongo.
Emmy was sad because she could not realise her full educational potential in South Africa - she had to go to Nigeria. She was sad because she could not own land, use any restroom or choose the career of her choice if she was back home.
Fast forward to 2005 - I went to St.Charles Illinois for training with Accenture. I met young BLACK and WHITE South Africans - intelligent, ambitous and warm people who loved their country.
Twenty years ago that would not be possible.
Mandela did not struggle in vain. South Africa like Iraq will get over this temporary difficulty and prosper.
Many posters on this forum like to state that Zimbabwe is the future of South Africa. That is untrue. People tend to forget that other African nations like Kenya and Tanzania with significant white settler populations did not chase their white settlers away.
Assume Sub-Saharan Africa was populated by Arabs. If Whites did half of what they did to the Blacks to the Arabs - no white man would set foot on Africa.
We have been extremely forgiving.
Excellent counter-point. Remind me not to get into a debate with you! ;^)

Bunches of them are working in Iraq. Probably in Afghanistan, too.
In that case, there is a difference, however slight, between apartheid as it came to be viewed in the 80s vs. how it was originally set up.
The Apartheid government deported entire populations of blacks and settled them in "Bantustans". They herded the majority population to 14% of the available land. So called Western "Conservatives" would have gone ballistic if Stalin did the same thing, but they were largely silent because the Boers were "nice christian folk just like us".
Any claim that 86% of present day South Africa was inhabited before the Boers came (as claimed by many supporters of apartheid - I hope you don't belong to that category) is patent nonsense.
Boers own 86% of South African land. Can you confirm that 86% of South Africa was previously uninhabited. Apartheid was Jim Crow (I don't know whether you secretly admire Jim Crow and long for a return of Jim Crow to "put us in our place").
It was tragic that when the Republican party led the charge for the abolition of Communism, it was silent on Apartheid. Imagine the moral weight that would have been brought down on Pik Botha and his ilk if Reagan and Thatcher spoke out as strongly against Apartheid as they spoke out against Communism.
Instead they left the job for Ted Kennedy.
This is one reason why the black diaspora does not hold either Reagan or Thatcher in high regard. Apartheid South Africa had nuclear weapons (they were not going to use them against the Russians! They were going to use the against people like me).
Well, I guess I now know why the Reagan and Thatcher supported Apartheid South Africa - "They belong to the same tribe!".
Apartheid IS NOT COMING BACK and LAND STOLEN FROM THE BLACKS WILL BE RETURED TO THEM. The South African Government should be commended for the mature way it is handling this issue. In conclusion, any argument of Apartheid is largely academic, it is over.
