Zuma 'shocked by white poverty' (in South Africa)

The head of South Africa's governing African National Congress, Jacob Zuma, has said he is shocked and embarrassed about white poverty in the country.

Mr Zuma was speaking after visiting the Bethlehem township near the capital, Pretoria, where white families live without running water or electricity.

He said the high level of black poverty did not mean whites did not suffer too.

South Africa's Helping Hand says the number of homeless white people has increased by 58% since 2002.

A new report by the charity, which helps poor white communities, says more than 130,000 white people in South Africa are homeless.

'Not about politics'

Speaking in Bethlehem, Mr Zuma said: "I am shocked and surprised by what I have seen here.

"The vast number of black poverty does not mean that we must ignore white poverty, which is increasingly becoming an embarrassment to talk about."

He said he had seen the same problems facing white residents of the township as he had seen in black squatter camps.

"This is not about politics, it's about people who are poor, who are in need and want to be helped by government," he said, quoted by the AFP news agency.

The trade union Solidarity, whose membership is mainly white, said it welcomed Mr Zuma's visit as an acknowledgement that poverty did not only affect the majority black population.

"For a long time whites have been seen as rich and and blacks poor," Solidarity secretary general Flip Buys told the AFP.

"Talking about white poverty has been seen as politically incorrect. The emergence of this scourge has left everyone looking for answers."

Analysts say Mr Zuma is keen to reach out to the white community at the same time as the main opposition party - which is predominantly white - seeks to increase its appeal to the black community, ahead of next year's election.

as usual whites held to higher standards, expectations and blame

it's so weird when post colonial blacks do this...

I remember back in my Jamaica days when blacks there were so proud of their white aristocrats they still had 20 years after independence. They would come up to my blonde blue eyed Jamaican girlfriend when she would speak patois and just gaggle

"look see mon, da missu frem town done come avisit mon..she a real queen mon, family been ahere since dem Spanairds mon..(not true French refugees from Saint-Domingue running from slave machetes 1800).coodeh! rass!." it was amazing...like wow....we have rich whites folks too...who can even speak our language they were treated like royalty...in safe areas.

Marxism, the equal opportunity impoverisher.

Now one of the most abject marxist politicians in American history wants the reigns of power here.

It's not surprising. The black man is acting worse than his traditional white oppressors but is insulated from blame by the left.

I'm a conservative. Ignore what the candidates say. Look at their actions only and then tell me which one of this year's two major candidates isn't a socialist (even a closet one)?

You'll get no arguement from me on McCain's failings as a conservative on many critical positions.

But Obama is an order of magnitude worse with no redeeming value, and is beyond socialism and wholly caught up in abject marxism IMHO.

McCain at least holds some important positions that we can hold ground with and buy time. Mind you, I am not saying that even in those areas he is anything like my optimum, but on the prosecution of the foreign war, on abortion, on some sanity in spending, on the 2nd amendment, on taxes, and on nuclear power and drilling for oil...at least there thyou can see pronounced difference between the two and have at least something to hold on to in this disgusting election cycle.

ANd, OBTW, McCain in his youth did serve and go in harm's way when he certainly could have gotten out of it if he had wanted to.

Excellent post mimics my feeling and many others here precisely about McCain and issues that concern those of us with a little experience mileage around here.

Maybe Obama needs to do his next informercial tour in South Africa - it might be educational for him.

The media whitewashes any reporting about the precipitous decline in South Africa and dscrimination to whites, crime corruption etc

It has taken them 30 years and nearly all whites being driven from Rhodesia for them to admit that black rule is problematic ..lol...to say the least.

Most still would never report Amin was a cannibal or that other Central African despots have enjoyed the other white meat as well...or any other story....look at Rwanda, they turned the story of tribal warfare between savages where over a million men, women and childen were murdered with machetes, knives, axes and stones into a crusade of how whites let this happen and it’s the fault of colonialism....tribal black excess is treated like a pet who always pees on the sofa and the master ignores it and makes excuses and sprays 409 on it (money)

we do them no favor ignoring their malfeasance

Guilty white media or the now disproportionate number of blacks in the US national media have no intention of shedding a glaring light on the abject failure of their historical kinsmen in Africa....it’s a lie, a racist lie.

Jeff: Thank you for your thoughtful reasoned response. I wish I were half as optimistic as you. Even if McCain wins, conservatives lose and lose BIG. The reason we study history, we study the past, is to know what will happen in future. This is applicable to world history, to financial history and to personal history. So, even if MacCain wins, based on his history of governance these last thirty years, I foresee him "effing" over conservatism and conservatism and in a huge way.

(My apologize to folks if my language seems harsh and crude, but only the harshest term can describe what I foresee, based on his previous history, McCain doing to conservatives and conservatism.)

Moreover, since the only good reason to vote for MacCain is fear of Obama and since Barry Hussein still doesn't leave me quaking in my boots, I still do not see myself pulling the lever for McCain come November.

I will vote against Obama because of the principles I outlined in my last post and in the hopes of retaining and holding some ground at a time when there is the very real prospect with Obama of retreating and losing heavily in all areas at a time when we have abject foreign and domestic enemies who are hell bent on absolutely destroying us, our liberty, and our way of life.

I am not afraid of Obama or the forces aligned with him, for I trust in my God and in the good moral judgement of tens of millions of honest, committed Americans. But, for the sake of my grandchildren I would rather avoid the complete train wreck if possible while not rendering the great sacrifices in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in the fight against abortion in vain...and Obama could well represent that.

God's speed my FRiend as you fight the same enemy and ideologies (for I know that is what we both are about) as you best see fit.

He and his fans refer to him as ‘The 100% Zulu Boy,’ Why, I don’t really know but I find that really amusing for a guy in his 60s.
