WASHINGTON When three-quarters of House Republicans balked Wednesday at a housing bill certain to become law, they were signaling three things at once: an ideological opposition to government involvement in the markets, a fiscal objection to writing a blank check that could cost taxpayers dearly if the condition of the mortgage finance system turns much worse and a political judgment that this was a moment to demonstrate their independence from President Bush.
Since Mr. Bush had already abandoned his threat to veto the bill, it was clear that their resistance was futile. The measure had overwhelming support in the House, and there was no sign of significant opposition in the Senate, which voted Friday, 80 to 13, to cut off debate, clearing the way for approval of the measure there on Saturday.

I think it’s terrible, goldstategop. It goes well beyond anything authorized in the US Constitution, it rewards people for bad decisions, and it punishes those of us who followed the rules and acted responsibly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we can stop it.
We are so far beyond original principles these days. Shoot, we are well beyond small government Republicanism of the 1980s. The government actually created this mess in the first place by creating the easy credit mess. Now they are using it to justify MORE government.
Where does it stop? That’s what I truly want to know. We already have something like $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities, and the politicians just can’t stop spending more. We all know where this is leading. It’s only a matter of time.
