Call Congress Back To Vote On Drilling

Leadership: When it comes to giving relief at the pump by drilling for more oil, this is truly a "do-nothing" Democratic Congress. President Bush should give 'em hell like Harry Truman did.

Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution states that the president "may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both houses" of Congress. On more than two dozen occasions in our history, presidents have done just that, forcing the Senate and House of Representatives to meet on extraordinary matters of defense or economic peril.

Sixty years ago this month, President Truman called such a special session to shame into action what he labeled a "do nothing" Republican Congress. He dubbed it the Turnip Day Session, because of the day on which it began. According to folklore in Truman's native Missouri, "On the 25th of July, sow your turnips, wet or dry."

Congress refused to do Truman's bidding in the session, but the bold move saved the president's political skin. He defied the odds that November and was re-elected — largely because the public came to view the 80th Congress as in the grip of a cowardly paralysis.

Today's Democratic-controlled 110th Congress is just as paralyzed, but the stakes are far higher. Our irrational dependence on oil from foreign nations is squeezing American consumers and businesses with sky-high fuel prices. And it makes us vulnerable to blackmail by hostile, oil-rich regimes.

God Bless our President! However neither he nor his father have the "Statesmanship" to stand up against raising taxes "read my lips," or to stand up to support our troops (Haditha marines), or to strongly support the common sense stated by the governor of Alaska when she pointed out the very purpose Alaska was acquired was for its vast natural resources. It is a bit of a disappointment that the current Administration seems to lack the strength of character to stand up for the backbone of this country; people with common sense and ordered minds.

The simple fact that a nobody like Obama can secure the nomination for President is adequate evidence that our once great country has been taken over by leftists who want nothing more than total power over the people so they can exercise their failed polices on endless social experiments until our country is on its knees, not to pray, but to submit to their corrupt authority.

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information on the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

I fail to see where he has the power to convene the Congress, we are not in "extraordinary Occasions" or in a "Case of Disagreement between them" (Congress)

We are not in a recession: not yet at least, and the House and Senate democratic leadership are in agreement to stall on drilling, much to the chagrin of all Americans

Bush would be wise not to attempt this based on our current scenario, it's a weak position that surely would be challenged by the "rat" leadership, left up to a SCOTUS where half the Judges can't even read the second amendment clearly enough to understand it's a immutable right !

It could set a dangerous precedent for future POTUS (like Obama) to harass Congress to do his bidding by abusing this clause

Let the unwashed masses (political illiterate) get mad enough and vote some of his assclowns out of office

W. should call both houses back in regards to setting an energy policy. In my view you are approaching a national emergency when a significant number of Americans will not be capable of paying $5 a gallon for heating oil to heat their homes. This would force the false messiah and all of his cohorts with their windmill fantasies to defend themselves on the floors of Congress. McCain could destroy Obama on this issue.

I'm confused.

I thought the Democrats in Congress had decided, earlier this year, to avoid going into recess, in order to prevent Bush from making any recess appointments.

Recess appointments at this point would only last till January.
