One World? Obama's On A Different Planet (John Bolton: Berlin Speech "Radical And Naive" Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 7/26/2008 | John Bolton

Posted on 07/26/2008 4:24:58 AM PDT by goldstategop

If that is what the senator thought he was doing, he still has a lot to learn about both foreign policy and the views of the American people. Although well received in the Tiergarten, the Obama speech actually reveals an even more naive view of the world than we had previously been treated to in the United States. In addition, although most of the speech was substantively as content-free as his other campaign pronouncements, when substance did slip in, it was truly radical, from an American perspective.

"Radical and naive" is the best shorthand description of Obama's Berlin speech. A good analysis from former UN Ambassador John Bolton!

Sure would love to see this man on the ticket in November. My heart will be in my throat until John McCain makes his choice.

Excellent analysis by a truly intelligent man. This deserves wide distribution, so Rush and Sean need to read this on air Monday.

The only thing I'm sure of about this election is that Bolton will not be the VP pick.

The best part is Bolton's description of Obama's "wall" metaphor. I reproduce it at some length here:

This is a confused, nearly incoherent compilation, to say the least, amalgamating tensions in the Atlantic Alliance with ancient historical conflicts. One hopes even Obama, inexperienced as he is, doesn't see all these "walls" as essentially the same in size and scope. But beyond the incoherence, there is a deeper problem, namely that "walls" exist not simply because of a lack of understanding about who is on the other side but because there are true differences in values and interests that lead to human conflict. The Berlin Wall itself was not built because of a failure of communication but because of the implacable hostility of communism toward freedom. The wall was a reflection of that reality, not an unfortunate mistake.

Tearing down the Berlin Wall was possible because one side -- our side -- defeated the other. Differences in levels of economic development, or the treatment of racial, immigration or religious questions, are not susceptible to the same analysis or solution. Even more basically, challenges to our very civilization, as the Cold War surely was, are not overcome by naively "tearing down walls" with our adversaries.

The point is walls exist not because of misunderstandings or out of fear but as the result of very real differences in values, beliefs, and interests between antagonists. In real life, these are not remediable through the psychobabble garbage taught in college international relations seminars. In short, the assumption if we're nice to our enemies, that conflicts between them and us will just disappear is hogwash. Maybe Obama believes it but its contradicted by all the evidence in the world. America's adversaries won't change their policies just because he's going to be polite to them.

He does not seem to grasp that the beauty of freedom is its respect for differences and creation of conditions, legal and political, that allow them to exist, flourish and provide benefits to all. In fact, politicians with agendas to "unify," who think they know who and what everyone should be, are invariably those who threaten freedom.

The idea we all need to go in the same direction is a totalitarian impulse. I prefer to go where I please, thank you!

One world. Is Obama really proposing we all drop everything to sing kumbaya around in his international campfire? What if we don't want to do it? Will we be accused of being against the "universal brotherhood" of man? Those are all relevant questions. I don't want to be part of one world!

He's not naive. He knows exactly what he is doing.

I believe Star Parker's statement absolutely adds credence to your view, "...politicians with agendas to "unify," who think they know who and what everyone should be, are invariably those who threaten freedom.".

As well as John Bolton's observation.

I very much like Bolton’s complete lack of fear to speak the plain truth.

Getting Bolton on the ticket would just shut him up. McCain is not going to let his VP say anything that might offend Hussein and the Democrats. Unless McC is saving up his more lethal ammo all I see in him is Dole and Bush I, insisting on conducting polite campaigns.

Obama, like the appeasers of the last century, seems to think having a good heart will make the world a better place. He will find himself seeing his country put at a severe disadvantage. His kind of foreign policy is great for a university academic seminar but it has no place in the real world.

Another under reported 'one world' nugget:

Obama's bill S2433 - U.N.'s Millennium Declaration

Obama's bill S2433 would require the U.S. to initially direct .7 percent of our GNP into the United Nations coffers for distribution as they see fit, for "food" to third world nations. Under earlier agreements this would evolve into a national tax on the U.S. with the UN attempting to levy this on all first world nations. The U.N. would have the power to increase this rate of taxation.

The U.S. would be required to surrender some of its sovereignty over foreign aid by putting it under UN control. The bill would force the U.S. to sign onto the U.N.'s Millennium Declaration, which would commit us not only to "banning small arms and light weapons" but also to adhere to the International Criminal Court Treaty and the Kyoto Protocol.

Ya know while I was reading this piece the same thought came over me. Bolton would be an excellent addition to the ticket.

And prior to that was the Atlantic Charter. Even earlier was Wilson's Fourteen Points. Did the "world" learn or just pause?

Is the United States the "policeman" of the world or seeking hegemony over it?

Do we see "history" repeating itself?
