WASHINGTON U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn underwent tests Friday for what was described as an irregular heartbeat.
His office told news outlets that the 60-year-old Oklahoma Republican was expected to return to work at the Senate over the weekend.
An aide said Coburn was at a hospital for the tests for "common arrhythmia.'' He was not admitted to the hospital, the aide said.
Coburn's office would not comment further.
A physician, Coburn describes himself as a two-time cancer survivor.
In 2003, just months before deciding to run for the Senate, he confirmed that he had undergone surgery and treatment for colon cancer.
That was a number of years after his first bout with cancer.
In 2007, Coburn had surgery to remove what was described as a benign pituitary tumor.
In recent weeks, the freshman senator has been involved in an unusual legislative battle with leading Democrats over his practice of holding up what they consider noncontroversial bills.
Democrats have put together a package of 30-plus bills that they say have wide support among senators.
Coburn is holding up at least some of the bills to force debate and to have time to offer amendments.
Prayers Up!
Hope it’s nothing more than just some over caffeination.
So sorry he has already had those other health problems, but it’s possible the irregular heartbeat is part of the whole aging process — so many people develop this problem in the fifties/sixties and it is extremely common. Often a beta blocker is prescribed and nothing further is needed. Let’s hope this does not become a bigger issue.
All the best to the good Senator.
Yep...he should lay off the caffeine and energy drinks for a while, and see if it subsides...
Darn. Prayers for Tom!
I think he just fell of the VP list. :-(
Prayers for Doc Coburn’s health.
He may retire in 2010, regardless. I think he’s gotten fed up with the crap there in DC.
