Adventurer Steve Fossett 'may have faked his own death' Round-the-world flying adventurer Steve Fossett may have faked his own death, investigators have claimed. By Chris Irvine Last Updated: 12:22PM BST 27 Jul 2008 Fossett, a friend of Virgin boss Richard Branson, and the first man to fly non-stop round the earth in a hot air balloon, went missing last September when his final flight in a light plane over the Nevada desert went missing. However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive. She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found. "It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

It wasn't too long ago that they found some lost WWII airmen in the Sierras:

Second Frozen Airman's Body Found On Sierra Glacier
Ktvu ^ | August 21, 2007 | KTVU/AP

FRESNO -- Mountain backpackers have discovered remains believed to be those of a missing World War II airman resting atop a glacier near where an aviation cadet's body was found two years ago, authorities said Monday.

The second set of human remains was found in an alpine region of Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada range on Wednesday, as little as 50 feet from where climbers spotted the ice-entombed body of Leo Mustonen in October 2005, park officials said.

The Big Guy upstairs must have had a hand in it...

Too bad about all the others, I guess... no Big Guy for them...

those are not the only reasons people fake their own deaths.. men will often fake their own deaths to get away from their wife and family because they don’t have the guts to break it off.

"We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

Umm, I'd say that statement suggests that you aren't that good at what you do, if you accidentally found six other planes that you had previously given up looking for when looking for Fosset.

That was exactly what I was thinking. It’s like spilling a deck of cards and someone telling you they’re so good they found ALL the Aces.

You know, seriously, if not for my child, I’d fake my own death if I had the resources.

Did he move assets around in his last days?

With his kind of assets I would think that they would be in constant motion. Like other monied people it would then be easier to skim a little here a little there and palce it in numbered accounts somewhere or in a mattress.

Heck, a guy like Fossett probably has substantial assets put away where nobody could get to them. With his wealth, there’s no way that anyone else knew where everything was.

And if you really were serious about it, and as bright as he was, he might have been planning this for some time.

I am not saying I believe he did it, but I sure wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand.

Consider this, while it’s unlikely that Jim Morrison faked his own death, he did actually have some plans in place to do so, and his motives were neither life insurance or criminal charges.

Some people are just weird.

Finding a crashed aircraft is not as easy as most folks imagine. I was the “Finder” of a crash site just west of San Antonio TX many years back...
A wreck has no resemblance to a real airplane.
What I saw looked like someone took a clothes dryer full of laundry and drug it through a rock field with a 4 wheel drive for a 1/2 mile.
I reported it as “suspicious”, it was later confirmed by a ground search party I directed to the site

What I’d point out to these conspiracy theorists is that they have, in fact, found six other crash sites.

And how long did those sites go undiscovered, hmm?

Sort of proves what Nevadans have been saying about Fossett’s disappearance: they’re reckoning that his crash site will be found years hence, the same way so many other crash sites of light aircraft are found in Nevada.

I used to live and farm near Eureka. Fossett came out to the Eureka County Commissioners a couple years ago to ask about holding his speed trial on the playa north of Diamond Valley. If you look at a map of Nevada (you’ll have to look at more than a road map), look for where Sadler-Brown road forks northeast off NV-278. Go out Sadler-Brown about 10 miles. Go south of the Brown Ranch (which will be on the south side of Sadler-Brown) or look south of the Sadler Ranch on that road. You’ll see a big empty playa. That’s where Fossett wanted to do his speed run.

Here, easier yet:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Eureka,+NV&ie=UTF8&ll=39.963438,-115.988159&spn=0.904144,1.367798&t=h&z=10

OK, see that big white area in the middle of the map? That’s it. All the green circles at the bottom are the farming area of Diamond Valley. Our farm used to be at the southernmost edge of that farming area.

Anyway, the BLM red tape was fouling Fossett up. Eureka County was thrilled to have Fossett’s team come out and we residents of the area were as excited as all get-out to have him come in.

So Fossett went off, looking for other areas. There’s one area in particular where I think he could have been scouting the day he disappeared:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Eureka,+NV&ie=UTF8&ll=39.31491,-117.505646&spn=0.456335,0.683899&t=h&z=11

The problem is, there is no town to speak of nearby for logistics support, lodging, etc. But that playa (last I was over there) was nice and smooth.

Indeed. It is crash sites like the one you mention, and ones in Nevada, that I used to illustrate to people just how difficult it is to spot crash sites in Nevada.

In the east Humboldt Mountains of Nevada, south of Wells (on I-80), there is a crash site of a B-17 that flew into the mountains in December, 1942.

We can all agree that a B-17 is a pretty big chunk of metal to turn into debris and “lose.”

Well, I’ve hunted mountain goats up in that range back in 1998. I’m here to tell people that I knew where the crash site was - the locals in Clover Valley told me *exactly* where it was. The way the mountain’s terrain has formed perfectly hides ALL of the crash debris in a “bowl” at about 7500’ up the side of the mountain. You can see nothing from below. You can see nothing from the side(s). You have to get up on top of the crash site and look down into the bowl, and at the right time of day, to see the wreckage from any distance away.

The USAAF and local ranchers were not able to pull those bodies out of the site until the following July/August.

Unless his wife/heir was in on the plot, how could Fossett gain the $50,000,000?

Huh... how does she survive from a two mile fall in her plane seat? The Big Guy upstairs must have had a hand in it...

Believe it or not, 14 others survived the fall but couldn't get out and died of injuries.

Yeah, even if the Big Guy didn't have a hand in it, I'd still have found Jesus a couple of times over on the way down.

Gee, and how long were those other 6 planes out there before they were found?
