I feel the same way about mute and moot. Please, there is no such thing as a mute point. I used to think that too. Earlier this summer I was standing behind a mute in line at a cash register. He was trying to return a music CD he had purchased earlier, but the seal on the case had been broken. The cashier would not honor his request. The mute pulled out his receipt and pointed at it frantically. Then he wrote down his excuse, which I could read from where I was standing. It said, "the seal on the case was open when I bought it!" If he was telling the truth, you have to admit that was a pretty good mute point. (true story)

I just found it in 19 dictionaries. Eisenhower used it in a speech, and was greatly criticized for it. But, it became so often used that it’s become acceptable.

This retired English teacher agrees with you. As a department head, I had frequent arguments with the biology, history, social studies, etc, teachers who would not correct for grammar. “Content is more important”, is the refrain I heard way too often.
While content is important, it is also necessary to be able to communicate that content with proper grammar and spelling. Colleagues, employers, and friends will judge ones intelligence and education by proper usage of the English language.
That said, I don’t want any poster to quit posting because of a lack of communicative skills. It is more important that we benefit from your thoughts. I’ve been married to a
“hillbilly” for 47 years. His grammar is, and always will be, atrocious. (he is a product of his environment) Even with his Masters’ Degree in Business, he needs me (or his wonderful secretary) to correct his communications. We do so gladly.
Bottom line? Mastery of grammar and spelling are most helpful, but not totally necessay if you have someone to help you.
