John McCain ad irritates many in Hollywood (as if the Drama Queens in Hollywood matter)
LA Times ^ | 7/31/2008 | staff

TO HOLLYWOOD it smacked of desperation.

That's why the reaction to a new John McCain ad attempting to portray Barack Obama as a kind of mindless celebrity -- likening him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- drew collective yawns and shrugs of irritation from politically active members of the entertainment industry.

"I didn't think McCain could look silly," mused Norman Lear. "But that ad diminishes him and makes him look silly."

Just for a start, industry types say the ad is wrong: In the Hollywood lexicon, Obama is not a celebrity. He's a rock star. (Note to McCain strategists: That's the difference between Jessica Simpson and Bono.)

Well, I’m under the impression they’ve both had sex with men.

The ad has worked to its intent. The MSM was ignoring McCain and ignoring Obama’s positions on issues but fawning all over the empty-suit Obama. This ad was designed for scrutiny but it was also designed to get the discussion rolling. Obama will have to explain how he's against expanded drilling with gas at $4 a gallon and 72% of Americans wanting it.

That is true, but I interpreted the hollywood argument as being about actors versus performers, not specifically that Obama was a specific type of music performer.

Frankly, Obama isn’t a rock star. Rock stars actually have a talent.

In the Hollywood lexicon, Obama is not a celebrity. He's a rock star.

And that's where Hollywood is ignorant of how the rest of the world views them.

To the rest of the world, there is no difference between a Simpson or a Bono, an artist or an artiste, a Streisand or a Lewinsky.

They are all attention-whoring carnies.

I wouldn't mind seeing this image used in some McCain ads:

Drives home the "Overconfidence" theme pretty nicely I think.

From the article...
"Anyone who knows and listens to Barack Obama doesn't think he's empty-headed," said Bragman, who has known more than his share of vacant skulls. "All this feels very Roveian to me."

And Bragman wonders to this day why he hears an echo every time that he speaks.

Like many in Hollywood, Bragman thinks this is the bottom line: "McCain is trying to use Obama's popularity against him, but guess what? Obama is popular."

Bragman is living in a bubble. Obama is overwhelmingly popular in his circle. Obama does not break 50% in the general population.

Does this mean that Norman Lear is no longer going to support John McCain?

The commercial was a home run for McCain and judging from the yelping of Barry and the ‘rats it was a bullseye. Obama is the most airheaded nitwit ever to run for President and I can’t see why you are buying into his hype.

That ad was great!

For all the irritation it's brought to tinsel town, it's worth it to lose the Hilton parents vote (if McCain ever really had their vote anyway).

So they each gave $2300 to McCain. Big deal. The article doesn't say, but I bet they've given more to dims anyway.

“Obama is the most airheaded nitwit ever to run for President and I can’t see why you are buying into his hype.”

I think as partisans it is difficult to be objective about the intelligence of the opposition. The dems are still convinced that Bush is an idiot. We shouldn’t “misunderestimate” Obama, just because we think he’s out to ruin the country.

He taught at the University of Chicago law school for twelve years. There are lots of bright students in those classes challenging the teachers every day. He knows how to handle himself.

I watched Obama on Meet the Press last week. Whatever else could be said about him, he didn’t come across as vacuous. Hard to see how that commercial will fly.

er...um....ah.....er....how...er...could you stand to...ah, ah....listen to him...um, ah...speak and then post this...er...um...comment?

BTW, welcome to FR.

Norman Lear is still trying to figure out why the audience for ALL IN THE FAMILY wound up liking Archie Bunker more than Meathead.

LOLOL! Never a truer word (words) spoken!! America adored Archie and STILL nobody likes the Meathead!
