PROTO NEW-CYCLE SUNSPOT

PROTO NEW-CYCLE SUNSPOT: A sunspot from the next solar cycle could soon appear in the sun's northern hemisphere. SOHO magnetograms show an emerging magnetic dipole with the telltale polarity of Solar Cycle 24:

So far this is merely a proto-sunspot; the magnetic fields have not coalesced to form a truly dark sunspot core. Nevertheless, the little active region is significant. It is a herald of new Solar Cycle 24, and a sign that the solar cycle, while seemingly stuck in endless minimum, is actually progressing normally. The calm won't last forever!

Readers with solar telescopes, keep an eye on the proto-sunspot.

I was hoping for a mini Maunder.

I don’t know if there is a GW list or who would have it. This might be the long-awaited first spot of cycle 24.

I sure as heck don't. Even a Daulton-level minimum could lead to the stavation death of millions. That's too high a price to pay to prove the global warming weenies wrong. The tide is starting turn against them anyway.

Short bussed. Very strange considering how big the Global Warming issue is on the BBS.

There are at least three I know of. Consider them pinged.

If we assume that the temperature records correlate with sunspot intensity, we can in rough terms assume that the 180-year cycle dominated from about 1100 to 1450 and the 220-year cycle dominates from 1650 to 2100. Stuiver-Brazuiunas analysis (ch. 7.4) also indicates this possibility. The previous 1000 years look like a mirror from this. The 2*180 year period seems to begin and end with a warm period and the 2*220 year period seems to begin and end with a cold period. The length of this period is one Gleissberg. The next cold period should begin about 2020. http://personal.inet.fi/tiede/tilmari/sunspot8.html#hyps2289

This might pertain to Rurudyne's Daily Global Cooling Watch too.

I'm sorry to report that there is no GW list.

...oh, GW = 'global warming' not 'grey_whiskers' never mind!

I believe steelyourfaith has a list he pings on such topics, as does ToleranceSucksRocks.

Cheers!

Oh.

Thought this was written in 02 Dec 2007. They said the same thing then. Then, in January 2008, another single spot came up.

Very interesting relationship being proposed now between the gravitational pull (center of gravity) of the 4 Jovian planets vs sunspot nbr/solar intensity/solar magnetic fields, and the Pacific Oscillations (PDO) and North Atlantic Oscillation patterns.

Over the long term (1600 - 2008) these short cycle periods (40 year cycle) solar oscillations track very close to the PDO and North Atlantic changes. Not quite as closely to temperatures directly, but the the changes in currents (El Nino/La Nina) follows the same cycle start-stop times.

I recently attended a lecture by a well informed solar scientist. He said predictions are that we will have several years of cooler weather, then warm up again quite a bit.
