Readers may recall that I'm a bit down on the prospect of John McCain finding a running mate who will do him more good than harm. However, one person who might fit this description is John Kasich. He was a popular nine-term Congressman from Ohio, a state Republicans desperately need to carry. And he's originally from western Pennsylvania, another key area.
Kasich seems to possess a blue collar appeal that his party desperately needs. To be sure, he was never a Senator or a Governor, but he held a leadership position in the House, serving as Chairman of the Budget Committee. He was also a key figure in passing welfare reform. Thus, Kasich would seem to possess credibility when it comes to economic issues.
Kasich has his own show, "Heartland," on Fox News. He's good on television and his performances reinforce my belief that, more than anyone else being mentioned on the Republican side, he projects an authenticity that will appeal to what we used to call "the common man."

JK is my former congressman. He was a hawk on the budget while he was in the Ohio House and Congress. That is probably his most noteworthy accomplishment.
The connection is Condit and Kasich were best of buddies.

The connection cited by the link to another post on another thread on FR was to the Chandra Levy investigation, and that somehow that was related to his leaving Congress, even though he decided to leave Congress more than two years before Ms. Levy disappeared.
As for them being, “the best of buddies,” that's because Mr. Condit often sided with Republicans on issues, thus giving Mr. Kasich (who was in the Republican House leadership at the time) a token Democrat to make the case that Republican policies were bipartisan.
To link Mr. Kasich to Ms. Levy, or to Mr. Condit’s more sordid doings, without any evidence whatsoever, is what I'd expect from DUers.

Don’t be so hard on the posters. Kasich and Joe Scarborough have LONG been associated with the Levy/Condit business. All were very much spared some tough questions when 9/11 took the matter off the front pages.
The big question: Can Kasich operate the wishbone? We know that J.C. Watts can.
I agree with that characterization.
That means he would be exactly what McCain is looking for.

I don’t know if O.J. Simpson is a Republican or Democrat, but if Al Cowlings ever runs for office, I wouldn’t vote for him.

Mr. Kasich and Mr. Condit worked closely together in Congress, and socialized together (many in the media reported that they went to a rock concert together - hardly adds up to participating in kinky sex and murder). It's easy to understand why Mr. Kasich cultivated Mr. Condit’s friendship, as Mr. Condit often voted with Republicans. In fact, in the 1990s, Mr. Condit, then-congressman from California, endorsed the REPUBLICAN candidate for Secretary of State of California.
Gee, do ya think that might have had something to do with the relationship? That Mr. Condit was endorsing REPUBLICANS for office in his own state?
Why in the world would Mr. Kasich, a House Republican whip at the time, NOT cultivate a friendship with Mr. Condit?
How does that tie in with Chandra Levy (hint: it doesn't)?
How does it justify the bald-faced lie of innuendo that Mr. Kasich left Congress because of the Levy investigation, when he decided to leave Congress YEARS before she disappeared, and then, to go hide out from anyone, he RAN FOR PRESIDENT??

Yes, he did pal around with Condit. Kasich’s exit from Congress always seemed a bit mysterious to me. [emphasis added] I would imagine the MSM would be dredging this up if Kasich would get selected to be on the ticket, which is why I bet he won't be selected.

How in the WORLD could Mr. Kasich's exit from Congress be MYSTERIOUS, at least as connected with Mr. Condit or Ms. Levy??
He left Congress to RUN FOR PRESIDENT!
WOW!! THAT was a great way to avoid folks asking him about the future disappearance of Ms. Levy, or his associations with Mr. Condit.
This is a smear job, plain and simple.
It is no wonder that so many good and decent conservatives have no interest in running for public office, with so many jackals willing to smear them with the most unsupported innuendo.

You do realize that Mr. Cowlings helped Mr. Simpson to actually flee from the police.

Also, were you opposed to the candidacy of Duncan Hunter this year?

I like both FDT and Hunter. I’d vote for either of them. They were the true conservatives in the race.
Two different bills. The Brady Bill was background checks, originally with a waiting period possible but only for handguns, transitioning to the instant check and including all firearms. (I bought a 1911A1 just after the bill passed and before it went into effect, then bought a Maverick 12 ga with 18.5 inch barrel right before the "instant check" went into effect. (Would have bought something like an AR-15, but couldn't afford it just then, got what I could).
The Assault Weapons ban (which Kasich did indeed vote for) was part of Bill's Crime, aka "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994" (H.R.3355 103rd Congress), complete with funding for 10,000 cops, which never appeared, and for Midnight Basketball for inner city Yutes. The Brady bill (H.R.1025 103rd Congress) passed first. Kasich voted *against* the Brady bill).

Anyone who has seen this F'n RINO when he subs for O'Reilly (which I promptly turn off, much like I do with WhoreAldo) would quickly realize we don't nee both a Presidential Candidate AND a VP Candidate who are both flaming liberals.

Me, too. In fact, I donated a lot of money (for me, at least), to Mr. Thompson.
But I can't understand why in the world you'd vote for Mr. Hunter.
After all, one of Mr. Hunter's “good friends” was Duke Cunningham, who was later pleaded guilty to his role in a bribery scandal and went to prison! In fact, I believe that Mr. Hunter took campaign contributions from some of the folks caught up in the Cunningham scandal.
How could you possibly vote for a man so close to such a scoundrel?
It was absolutely despicable that during the campaign some folks tried this angle against Mr. Hunter, to make hay of this association with Mr. Cunningham. Although we didn't agree on much, I agreed strongly with pissant when he'd point out that this was unworthy garbage.
I don't know why you'd vote for Mr. Hunter but not for Mr. Kasich, in that they're both associated with folks with less than savory records. The only difference is that Mr. Hunter's friend actually was adjudicated “guilty” in a court of law, and Mr. Kasich’s friend was not.
I'll repeat - whether the target is John Kasich or Duncan Hunter, this kind of smear is unworthy of conservatives.
