SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.
The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
"I have said in the past - and I'll repeat again - that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.
Some two dozen members of Congress are co-sponsors of legislation to create a commission that would study reparations - that is, payments and programs to make up for the damage done by slavery.

O-bam has a race strategy,
Itll be a great milestone, says he.
Forget imagination for all reparation,
And white folks payin fo slavery!
I have to stay tight with my base
And make them conscious of race
Libs are guilt-ridden so nothing forbidden
For me to stay ahead of the pace!
Yeah, wait till he gets into office and he’ll be singing a whole different tune.

he could lose some of his base on this one!
Do you have a link to anything saying he was for them?
Thanks
“And if you believe that, we’re gonna get along just fine!” (Steve Earle)
I thought he eluded to his approving of reparations during his speech to Chicago businessmen last week? This guy is not only inexperienced...he’s nuts!
Or is he afraid that the share that his white half will have to pay as reparations is larger than the share his black half will receive?
Incidentally, in reality he'd be a good study case and counterexample. Is he the descendant of slaves, or the descendant of slave-owners?
Cheers!
He just keeps confirming Rev. Wright’s charactization of him as a politician who has to say certain things to be elected, which was exactly the statement that convinced BHO to throw Wright under the bus.
As for good schools and jobs for unemployed, you can provide kajillion dollar schools in the inner cities and it won’t make a lick of difference if the people themselves won’t value education. And there generally is a reason most people are unemployed, namely laziness or criminal records or substance abuse. Handing them jobs won’t do a thing to change them, especially if they can get paid for doing nothing. Just more tripe for his base.
For your perusal ...
he could lose some of his base on this one!
You ain’t joking, and I’m looking forward to watching the loss. :-)
“...you can provide kajillion dollar schools in the inner cities and it wont make a lick of difference if the people themselves wont value education...”
The same can be said for housing. How many ‘low income’ housing units have we seen dynamited last 20 years?
Check any Civil War era cemetery. Those souls are reparations enough.
Obama says.
LMAO In a way, that sounds like marriage, don't it? LOL

"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds," he said.
So Obama says now he is against reparations but what he really means is he is against a cash settlement style of reparations but is all for an increase in government funds sunk into the same Dem-controlled inner cities and school systems that have not only created the problem (along with out-of-wedlock babies) but have perpetuated and maintained a permanent underclass.
So the bottomline is he DOES support reparations in the worst way possible - taxing producers to pay the non-producers to not only not produce but simply take, take, take. That's anything but change.
I thought that the three TRILLION dollars handed out to black welfare moochers (since Lyndon Johnson introduced his Great Society) were REPARATIONS.
Obama has decided that someone needs to be on the right in this campaign and McCain won’t do it so he will.
That’s strategery for you!
bill shut !
With a wink and a nod. The affracan Merricans know what he is up to and will lay low just like Wright..Farrakhan an Shabazz..
Uh huh....
Check, Please (Obama Plans Reparations for Slavery)
Nice try, though, Barry...
No links but last week he hinted his feelings on the subject were that words were fine, but actions would speak louder. He must have caught hell on that.
Yes, there is a thread somewhere on here with Obama’s quote. Something to the extent that reparations should be dealt with by the government “not with words, but with deeds.”
He did not say "no." The writer said he said "no." What he really said was that it would be best to ..., but in the end he will take from those that have to give to his base. He cannot be trusted and anyone with any sense knows it.
I don’t believe anything he says, period. He’s a lying Marxist.
Hell, he would just take money from his ‘white’ pocket and put it in his ‘black’ pocket.
tada..
Na, he’s always been for it. It just depends upon who is audience is as to when he says America needs to pay up.
As well he should. Everyone knows that his grandmother was white. Now how could he impose reparations from his own grandmother. (which has been the whole problem with “reparations” from the get-go...our nation is too blended to find a single race in someone who had ancestors that were American slaves.)
That my FRiend, is one fine retort.
1. I thought welfare, food stamps and racial quotas WERE reparations.
2. Wasn’t the Civil War and the lives of thousands of white and black Americans enough reparation?
3. Didn’t white Americans design and implement the underground railroad?
4. Not ALL states were slave states so why must the United States apologize?
5. Didn’t we bus inner city kids in the 70’s at taxpayer expense? If that isn’t a failed raparation, I don’t know what is.
6. Run away from raparations or this wound will never heal.
7. Didn’t Africans sell their own to English slave traders?
“...Hell, he would just take money from his white pocket and put it in his black pocket...”
HA! Now that is funny! Wish I’d thought of that.
“....Check any Civil War era cemetery. Those souls are reparations enough...

Thanks! I try hard.
AP?
Is that still in effect?
ditto
To my knowledge. I tried to ask this morning since I desired to post this very same article but never heard an answer.
Would you favor elimination of Federal Taxes as a form a "reparation"?
When he finally hands out reparations, since he is only half black, shouldn’t he just get 50 percent of the reparations ? :-)
Here’s another flip-flop. Is anyone keeping count?
Nowhere in this article does Obama say, “I oppose reparations.”
Better keep track on your calendar of Barry's daily position on the issue.
Whatever his intentions, whatever he’s saying now and the words he’s using are subject to change without notice.
Someone will invent for him a more ‘benign’ version of what slavery reparations means in so many words but it will amount to the same thing. That’s what I’m thinking now and like Obama’s intentions, my opinions are subject to change but I would first have to notice a change in Obama’s intentions.
Those are excellent points.
Plus, the taxpayers should not be supporting the harems that black drug dealers set up in several cities at a time, having their “wives” and bastards collecting welfare benefits in excess of $30,000 per annum per “family” unit.
He’s changed his position on drilling, he will change his alleged new position on reparations.
