Big Oil Continues to Rake in Record Profits
August 1, 2008
Washington, DCSenate Democrats responded today to a Department of Labor report which indicates that the nation shed another 51,000 jobs in July the seventh straight month of losses as unemployment rose to a four-year high of 5.7 percent and Chevron announced a second-quarter profits of nearly $6 billion. Democrats also called attention to the disproportionately higher unemployment rate among Hispanic American workers.
According to the Department of Labor report, the unemployment rate among Hispanics was 7.4 % last month. The disproportionately higher jobless rate among Latinos underscores the urgent need to strengthen the economy.
This week has made it crystal clear that the only ones doing well in the Bush-McCain economy are oil company executives, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said. As we pay more than ever to fill our tanks and to heat and cool our homes, Exxon, BP, Shell and Chevron all announced billions in new profits including the highest single-quarter take in history. Meanwhile, American jobs continue to disappear, millions have seen their full-time jobs cut to part-time work and unemployment has reached a four-year high. It is disturbing that none of this news seems to concern Bush-McCain Republicans. While employers have cut jobs for seven straight months, Republicans have blocked at least seven of our efforts this year to create good-paying jobs here at home by investing in alternative, renewable energy sources.
Hispanic families are being squeezed by rising expenses. Median Hispanic family income is lower than median family income overall, so rising costs eat up larger share of their family budgets. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 2000 and 2006, Hispanic families saw median family income fall by 0.8 percent, to $41,147, a loss of $334. Since 2000, the average price of gasoline has increased 145 percent to $4.06 per gallon, the average family health insurance premium has jumped 41 percent to $11,765, and the average cost of child care for two children is now $1,041 per month.
With the price of food and fuel skyrocketing, Americans, and Latinos in particular, are being squeezed at the pump and the supermarket as they bear the burden of a struggling economy, Senator Robert Menéndez (D-NJ) said. Once again the Latino unemployment rate is higher than that of the rest of the population, while oil company profits are higher than theyve ever been in history. Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices, break our dependence on oil, stop federal handouts to oil companies and ultimately create jobs. But Republicans are fighting vigorously to aid and protect the oil companies when its the American people and hardworking Latinos who need us to fight for them. Oil companies have had almost eight years of an administration thats held their hand. Its time for a government that holds them accountable.
Reid added: Democrats know America cannot afford for this streak to continue any longer, which is why we will continue working to strengthen our economy in the short-term and address the long-term economic problems hurting Americas middle class. We will propose new legislation to jumpstart our economy and continue our effort to invest in clean energy, both of which will create good-paying jobs here in America. We hope that Bush-McCain Republicans will finally do more than offer the same failed fiscal and foreign policy strategies that got us into this mess in the first place.
The Congressional Joint Economic Committee released a fact sheet today on the economic situation of Hispanic American families. To see the full report click here.

Cut taxes even more...
Cut government even more...
Stop the giveaways...
That unemployment number might not be that accurate...
I do know, as a lot of others, illegals are here and they do skew the numbers...
So according harry ‘latino’s’ pay more for gas than Americans. According to harry oil companies have something to do with ‘latino’s’ not having skills(education, being able to speak English, vocational skills,etc.). Bush does have some blame for ‘latinos’ not having jobs HERE, because millions of them aren’t suppose to be here. What an idiot harry is.
You’re an (no pun intended) “Idiot”. I’m American, I’m Latino, I’m Hispanic, I’m a vet, and I’m not illegal. I’m also a Republican that sometimes wonders why so many ethno-centric wannabees that would have been democrats a hundred years ago are suddenly spewing their krap on this side of the line. Do yourself a favor and take a good look at the KIA in our current war.
Minorities hit Hard: Could be that with all the recent raids, employers are finally doing the right thing and checking documentation. Time to go home Jose!!
Record Unemployment: Could be that the dems included an additional 17 weeks of unemployment in the Troop funding bill. The dems knew sneaking it in was the only way to get President Bush to agree to such garbage.
Reid’s an idiot!!
The article, bro ... not you.
Do you disagree with the reports of many illegals fleeing jobs because some pressure is being put on employers to check them for their status? ... I don't.

Thanx for your service.
Are they losing jobs?
I wonder how unemployment among Hispanics break out in terms of fluent English speakers vs. non-fluent English speakers.
Also, I wonder what the breakout is between legal immigrants and illegal aliens.
A: It's a trick question. There's no such thing.
If this isn’t the politics of envy, what is? It’s class warfare, to the detriment of the public.
It is too bad that in school, college, and law school nobody ever taught Harry how read the US Constitution. Congress has primary responsibility for the US budget, taxes, and regulations; if any part of government should be blamed for the economy it is Congress.

We and the rest of the world have energy based economies. The more energy we have, the better and stronger our economy. The demonrat solution to fix the economy is not increase the domestic oil and gas production, but rather to increase the taxes on the oil companies...which will be passed along to We, the People, who eat, drive, heat and cool our homes, use plastic, etc.
Reagan was right. Government is not the solution to our problems. Government is the problem. Actually, the demonrat government is our enemy. Tar and feather Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the demonrats and run them out of DC so the few responsible adults in government can fix the mess they made.
My local Home Depot parking lot is enough to skew the numbers a percent or two!
BTT
I dunno if I agree with Harry. Illegals seem to be 100% employed. With democrat blessing, of course.
Harry Reid - Moonbat supreme
Did he realize you CAN’T COUNT 10 million PEOPLE in the FIGURE?
7.4% of LEGAL HISPANICS are unemployed.
Big Oil paid $3B in taxes...where is that mentioned?
We need a revolt, and now.
Secure the border, drill and get the UN and Fed out of our lives.
