Pelosi's sentiments about drilling are greener than we think
Irish Times.com ^ | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 08/03/2008 5:44:09 PM PDT by Quaker

HOUSE SPEAKER Nancy Pelosi opposes lifting the moratorium on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and on the Outer Continental Shelf.

She won't even allow it to come to a vote. With $4 gas having massively shifted public opinion in favour of domestic production, she wants to protect her Democratic members from having to cast an anti-drilling election-year vote.

Moreover, given the public mood, she might even lose. This cannot be permitted. Why? Because, as she explained to Politico: "I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet." A lovely sentiment. But has Pelosi actually thought through the moratorium's actual effects on the planet? Consider: 25 years ago, nearly 60 per cent of US petroleum was produced domestically. Today it's 25 per cent. From its peak in 1970, US production has declined a staggering 47 per cent.

"In Federalist No. 10, James Madison ("The Father of the U.S. Constitution") said, "[D]emocracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."

The fear of what happens to freedom and liberty under democratic rule is what prompted Madison and the rest of America's founders to labor so hard to create what they did: a constitutional republic.

Under God, it is allegiance to the Constitution that has preserved our liberties, our peace and happiness, our security, and our very way of life. Furthermore, it is the repudiation and rejection of constitutional government that is responsible for the manner in which these very same blessings are currently being lost.

Someone needs to remind Rep. Pelosi that it is not her duty (nor does she have the power) to "save the planet." And by the same token, someone needs to remind Senators Barack Obama and John McCain that they are not campaigning to be President of the World, but President of the United States."

Source...

BTW, a power hungry moron is not a pretty sight.

Pelosi’s district is in San Franciso. Probably 85% of her constituents don’t own cars and use public transportation. Those that do own cars are wealthy enough that the cost of gas isn’t huring them much.

Of course when Muni has to start raising fares and cutting service due to gas prices...

I disagree.

If he’s going to call them back, he should wait at least a week or two before doing it.

Wait until this has really filtered down to the public. Then do it.

IMHO, the FReeper community should support the Speaker as she insures that all America finally realizes the Democrats are:
1. Totally unresponsive to the will of the citizens they putatively represent.
2. Are owned and controlled by the enviro-whacko leadership.
3. Don’t care if America nad Americans are damaged financially.

We should encourage Rep. Pelosi, indeed.

I didn’t think about it that way, Good Point!

Question: Who is going to do the filtering down to the “public”? The MSM is too busy with their Obamagasisms.

There are some excellent points made here, but it will not affect Pelosi one iota. She will not let any discussion come to the floor because she knows Democrats are on the unpopular side of the debate so, for purely political reasons, she's saying: “Screw you, America! I have the gavel...I have the power, and I intend to use it as I, Queen Nancy, see fit.” My Mom taught me not to say anything at all if you can't say something nice, so: Nancy, you are an ego-maniacal, self-serving bitch (...that's as good as it gets, Mom.)

“I’m trying to save the planet; I’m trying to save the planet.”

That shrill statement shows all that is wrong with the US government. One, it’s all about her. She wants to be a heroic figure. Two, Congress is so ensconced in the wealth of stolen funds from the citizenry, that they are oblivious to the needs of the same. They think there is an unlimited supply of money with which to throw at their pet projects that may garner them an everlasting title and/or dedication.

How about saving the United States, Nancy? Or how about merely saving your constituency? Start with something realistic and decent. The reason you’re there is to serve your congressional district, not to save the planet.

If he’s going to call them back, he should wait at least a week or two before doing it.

He should also make sure that those who support the drilling are aware, but avoid any appearance of trying to keep it 'secret'.

BTW, what happens if the President calls a special session and the Speaker refuses to show up? If there's no quorum, does the President have the authority to compel attendance?

The democrat party represents a return to the politics of feudalism. The d+(umbass/emocrat) party expects loyalty to itself, more than to any organizing principles. For this reason, expecting democrats to argue the worth of ideas — even their own — is a waste of time.

She may have as well said “Let them eat cake”

We need to burn them with this till Nov. Every middle class family in the country is hurting with fuel prices the way they are and if we don't get some relief before winter it will only get worse.

She has given us a great big present now if the Republicans are smart enough to take advantage of it.

Its time to play the elitest card and play it hard!

Call them back so Pelosie and the 213 Do Nothing Democrats can promptly ajourn again?

Dumb tactics. Better if we all get off our asses, support the GOP Congresspeople in their revolt tomorrow. Call the Congress non stop tomorrow.

ONLY way Congress is coming back is if Nancy and the Dems are forced to it by the American people.

Yes they do. Tell them you are an US citizen and she is Speaker of the US House, not just her district. Don't let them put you off with that lie. Push them and they will take your call. They are counting on the bulk of people to simply go away if they stone wall. I called her office Friday.

Given her history of life in a mob-involved political family, this business of her believing that her mission is "saving the planet" is perfectly "scary".

People on such missions virtually always end up murdering as many innocent people as they can.

It is possible, but it SHOULD be PROBABLE, if more people used their brains.

I’m going to write an editor’s letter to my local newspaper to explain things. The people who watch tv also read editor’s letters.

Remember we live in a Republic, perhaps concentrating on “Saving the Republic” is better suited to you than “Saving the Planet”. Jesus Christ did that over 2000 years ago, we are all saved by the willing death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, you do not have to do it again.
