ICE encourages voluntary deportation

Would illegal immigrants voluntarily surrender to immigration authorities at the federal building in downtown San Diego? It may seem unlikely, but this is what federal immigration officials hope will happen starting Tuesday. That's when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will roll out “Operation Scheduled Departure,” a pilot program created to encourage people who have outstanding deportation orders to turn themselves in.

San Diego and four other U.S. cities will participate in the program, which is set to end Aug. 22. The other locations are Santa Ana; Chicago; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Charlotte, N.C.

...

Mack said the program was born after the agency received feedback from immigration advocates, attorneys and others critical of a recent wave of sweeps in which agents targeted illegal immigrants' homes, arrived early in the morning and often arrested people in front of their families.

Many of the people arrested turned out to be relatives of an illegal immigrant, and sometimes the agents went to an outdated address.

“We heard them ask to please look at alternative ways of dealing with the fugitives, ways of reducing our fugitive list that were more humane,” said Mack, who added that arrests of fugitives will continue.

Why would they bother?

Notify the landlord and electric company, close bank accounts, pack up the truck, and they’re outa here!

Actually, this is kind of interesting. Illegals’ advocates claim that illegals are tax-paying and law-abiding. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I know.) Law-abiding individuals, or those who are mostly law abiding turn themselves in when a warrant is issued and they are aware of it. This is those advocates’ opportunity to prove it.

Any guesses as to the percentage of warrants that are taken care of this way? (I’m thinking “small” or “none”.)

Where I live the illegals don’t bother notifying anyone. They just move out in the middle of the night, leaving everyone else to clean up the mess. I don’t feel sorry for landlords who rent to them, though.

Well, they do tend to be rather direct in their approach.

They decide they want to be somewhere, and they go there, and ask no man’s leave.

These statements are all code saying that when ICE goes looking for a criminal alien they aren't allowed to arrest anybody, but that alien. When they serve a warrant on a known gang member who is an illegal they can't sweep up the illegal parents, siblings, etc. that happen to reside there.

In theory it sounds good. Humane, all that. In practical terms, it’s a nice vacation home courtesy of the US taxpayer. They’ll be back over the border next month. Some of them will stay home, I suppose since work is getting sparse for them.

Nothing surprises me from people in government.

Out here in Arizona several years ago the Phoenix City Councilmen decided to leave bicycles in the park for the homeless to use so they could get around...

...pretty soon no bicycles to be found in the park anymore. Duhhhhh!
