Pelosi: GOP’s Oil Drilling Plan Is A ‘Hoax’

A Republican plan to open more public land to oil exploration and drilling is “unworthy of serious debate,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Monday.

Under pressure from Republicans to call Congress back into session, Pelosi on Monday issued a statement saying that Democrats have already offered a “real solution” to the nation’s high energy prices.

Democrats want to force President Bush to “free our oil” from the nation’s emergency stockpile. Diverting oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve “would bring immediate relief within 10 days,” Pelosi insisted.

She said a Republican plan to “give away public lands to Big Oil” will not immediately reduce prices at the pump -- and it would save Americans “only 2 cents ten years from now.”

“This Republican hoax is unworthy of the serious debate we must have to reduce the price at the pump and promote energy independence,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi accused Republicans of promoting the interests of “Big Oil” and the Bush administration, something that has resulted in $4-a-gallon gasoline, she said.

Republicans favor an “all-of-the-above” approach to the energy crunch. They want expanded domestic oil drilling, expanded nuclear power, conservation, and the development of alternative sources of energy.

Pelosi, however, refuses to even allow a vote on expanded domestic oil drilling. She and other Democrats say oil companies should drill on the 68 million acres they already control -- an argument dismissed by the oil companies, who say they already stand to forfeit any leases they fail to develop within a set period of time.

House Democrats also are pressing for new investments in renewable energy, increasing vehicle fuel efficiency standards, making mass transit more affordable, cracking down on price gouging, and releasing oil from the government's stockpile.

1.    You can't drill for oil anywhere.

 

2.    You can't build a refinery anywhere.

 

3.    You can't build a nuclear power plant anywhere.

 

4.    You can't burn coal for electricity.

 

5.    You can't allow the oil companies to reinvest their profits into exploration.

 

6.    But you can drive up the price of food by subsidizing an ethanol industry that takes land out of food production while using more energy than it creates.

 

7.    You must continue to tax every gallon of gas that we put in our tanks.

 

8.    You must threaten all energy users with additional 'carbon taxes'.

 

9.    And just in case some entrepreneur out there somewhere may have an idea for an alternative energy concept that just might work, you must raise the capital gains tax so that investors have less capital and less incentive to invest in his/her project.

 

Count your blessings.  With the coming change in administration, it will be a wonder if the price of gasoline doesn't get to $10 per gallon.

Two lies in one sentence. Sorry, LJ, but this one won't pass muster. Corn ethanol has a positive energy balance (not a huge one---but it "is" positive, of around 1.4 to 1). And thus far I haven't been able to find any evidence of any signficant decrease in availablity for sale of any commercial grain crop--CERTAINLY not corn. The crop surplus last year was gigantic--far more than needed to supply the US with all the corn-derived foods it ever did, fulfill the needs of the ethanol plants, and still have stuff left over to export.

Unlike the vast reserves in off shore (and other domestic) oil fields, the strategic reserves are much more limited, and would only increase supply for a relatively short period.

Courtesy of penelopesire. In 1905,the Glenn Pool Oil discovery in Oklahoma went from discovery in a remote wilderness to full production in just 2 years. That means wells drilled,infrastructure built, storage tanks built,(they use to flow the oil into earthen pits before they got the tanks built btw), and pipelines spanning some 450 miles were completed by late 1907.

And remember folks...most of the area had no rail lines, so the equipment was brought to the area on MULES!!

Nancy is claiming it will take ten years to do what they did in 2 with mules. Either she's stupid or she thinks we are.

A link that states oil was hit in 1905 and 2 years later "pipelines had been laid up from the Texaco and Gulf refineries on the Gulf Coast and down from the Standard Oil refinery in Kansas to access the high-quality crude."

Cite this the next time a Dem tells you our technology can't do what they did with mules in 1905.

I watched a segment on CBN a couple of weeks back on the Bakken project in the northern plains states. They interviewed on of the geologists, he says 3 to 5 years.

First, offshore leases are not 'given away' - they are leased competitively for up to $40,000 per acre (which is about 100 times more than many onshore leases). The proceeds go to the federal treasury).

Second, it won't take "ten years." Many oil fields (including one possibly pushing a billion barrels) were discovered, decades ago, off the coast of California ( http://www.mms.gov/omm/pacific/offshore/... ). They have never been developed, due to opposition from the Democrat party. Because no leasing or exploration is required, several of those fields could be producing oil in less than a year, using existing floating facilities - IF the Democrat party, at the federal State and local levels, would not oppose such action.

Here, in Canada, our government auctions leases to drill (for enormous sums, these days) -- the surface rights to most of the land aren't transferred. If oil is discovered, the government then collects healthy royalties on every barrel of oil pumped. Why haven't you guys thought of that?

The fallacy of the democrat argument to drill what big oil already has leased is this: not all leases are created equal.(1) ANWR and offshore are class A prospects (larger and less risky); what is already leased comprises class C,D and F prospects in comparison (smaller and more risky); (2) big oil already paid for the right to develop the leases and either is in the process of evaluating via seismic and drilling or may have already condemned these prospects by risking huge sums and drilling dry holes, therefore why should big oil be required to risk good money after bad because the democrat congress knows better than they where to drill?;(3) better to spend new risk capital on bigger prospects with less risk to more rapidly increase supply.

The US Federal land (& offshore)leasing system works much in the same way as Canada’s. Surface ownership rights are not conveyed; only subsurface mineral rights are leased and the government receives the bonus consideration from an open bid and keeps a royalty. The lessee does get the right to necessary use of the surface (like an easement)to explore and drill but only for the term of the lease and so long thereafter as production is maintained.
