BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Serbia's Justice Ministry says it has received no formal U.S. request to extradite or prosecute a Serb student wanted on assault charges in New York. U.S. police say 20-year-old Miladin Kovacevic severely beat fellow college student Bryan Steinhauer during a bar fight in May and then fled to Serbia in June to avoid prosecution. Washington reportedly has demanded that Serbia return Kovacevic by Aug. 1.
But Serbian Justice Ministry says in a statement released Wednesday the United States has not made a formal request for Kovacevic's extradition to the U.S. or trial in Serbia. The ministry says «it is of utmost importance that this case be concluded as soon as possible.

I believe the authorities took his passport, and the Serbian government issued him an emergency one then whisked him away back home.
Should read 'alledgedly beat'....but the media has this case tried and convicted already. Yes, he should return to face a jury but I doubt he would recieve a fair trail.

We expect the Serbian government to act on that notice and to fulfill the obligations that were undertaken by their representatives, by the consul and vice consul in New York when he signed the bail document committing to produce Kovačević in court. source

Culturally Serbia has been “west” far longer than “western” Europeans. As part of the Eastern Roman Empire centered on Constantinople Serbia was far more advanced than the brutish Euros living in western europe following the fall of Rome.

Kovacevic should get a real trial, it goes without saying, but the kid who got beaten into a coma weighed 135, and the Serbian goes about 280, as I recall. The Serbian's family has not denied he was in the fight, or alleged that the guy beaten was armed, or that he posed a threat in any other way. Given those uncontested basics, there is nothing the victim could have done to justify what the Serbian did.
My guess is that the Serbians' mistrust of our justice system has less to do with bombs Clinton dropped when Kovacevic was 10 years old, and more to do with the fact that he's probably very guilty of playing Cain to another student's Abel.
It is my understanding that he was issued an emergency passport by an embassy official who has since been disciplined by the Serbian government.
I believe he made his own way out of the country, not whisked away aboard some Serbian government plane.

Senator Schumer is reportedly calling for a suspension of foreign aid to Serbia until they turn over Kovacevic. I don’t think it’s going to happen. The best we can hope for is a trial in Serbia. I don’t see them willfully turning him over anytime soon.
Kovacevic is a dirt bag. A real man knows if you out weigh the other fella by 150 you give him the old outstretched palm on the forehead and watch the guy swing at air. Then you signal the bouncer to get the guy out of their. Even if Kovacevic let his anger get the best of him and did something completely out of character, a real man would face the consequences. Anything else is positively Clintonian.

The fight started between Bryan Steinhauer and the boyfriend(Sanel Softic) of the girl, not Kovacevic.
The boyfriend who is a BOSNIAN MUSLIM along with the third man charged in the beating and was angry with Steinhauer for following them around (him and his girlfriend) and getting too close. Sanel accused him of grabbing her rear end. They started shouting at each other and according to Softic AND the girlfriend, Steinhauer HEAD BUTTED Sanel and gave him a bloody nose. Kovacevic intervened after this and was hit on the side of the head by STEINHAUSER.
EVERYONE HAS CLAIMED THAT Steinhauer was drunk and aggressive, but the police WON’T RELEASE his blood alcohol levels which would prove/disprove this accusation.

Even if we could take the assertions of the accused and the girlfriend at face value, there's the problem of "credible threat." If I start with the claims you attribute to them, I still can't make a credible case for a couple of big guys stomping a guy while he's out on the ground. All I can say is, if a friend and I did that to somebody—unless our opponent had been attacking me with a lethal weapon that he still possessed—I'd rightly be indicted for attempted murder.
Do you have a link that backs up the story of Steinhauer being a danger to society? I've seen accounts that said he danced with the girl; that he groped the girl, or the guys thought he had, but the girl says he hadn't; and so on. The closest to your analysis I can find is on Pravda.ru, which has typical posters saying things like this concerning the story, which I'm presuming you don't endorse:
"The faggot was a jew, you can't touch the gods without the whole jew government come down on you."
The only credible threat is the threat that Kovacevic would get railroaded in court given the fact that the other two who did the beating got only 10,000 bail and he got 100,000. Sounds fishy to me. And given that the yellow scandal mongering press is trying and convicting Kovacevic in print is another reason for his getting the heck out of here.
Who said anything about Stinhauser being a threat to society? Need a pair of reading glasses maybe or just spouting things off the top of your head?

My weird analysis is based on compliance training for law enforcement and peace officers, which is based in turn on case law in New York State. The "threat to society" phrase was not idly chosen: If it's true that Steinhauer had attacked someone, the only basis for continuing action against him once he was down would be that he continued to pose a threat of immediate physical harm to others.
Once a guy is down and doesn't have a deadly weapon which he's in a position to use, and you continue to use potentially deadly force against him, you could be looking at an attempted murder charge.
