Shoot First, Ask Later - In Prince George's, a drug bust goes awry.
Washington Post ^ | August 7, 2008 | Masthead Editorial

Posted on 08/07/2008 6:50:55 PM PDT by neverdem

THE DRUG raid by Prince George's County law officers on the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo last week was a Keystone Kops operation from start to finish.

Acting on a tip that a 32-pound package of marijuana had been sent by Federal Express from Arizona to Mr. Calvo's home (addressed to his wife, Trinity Tomsic), Prince George's police swung into action. Which is to say they got on the phone, calling law enforcement agencies to see who might have a SWAT team available to bust the unsuspecting Calvo family. (It seems the police department's own team was tied up.) After being turned down at least once, they finally struck a deal with the Prince George's Sheriff's Office, whose track record with domestic disputes is extensive but whose experience with drug busts is slight. And it showed.

Would we be hearing about this if it weren’t the mayor of some little burg?

This is just another case of some podunk department’s “SWAT” team screwing up - happens all the time...

Perhaps the good mayor needs to have his local prosecutor explore possibilities of charging the keystone cops with trespassing, breaking and entering, unlawful discharge of firearm, unlawful use of firearm during commission of a crime, etc.......

They would likely get off but it would make it very uncomfortable for the knuckleheads and make them think twice before doing it again.

They killed his dogs, what a$$hohles.

Sure...I just want to get as much info out to anyone who will read it so that these jack-booted thugs don’t get away with this kind of stuff.

"To protect and serve? or to be sick, twisted bastards?"

Sick, twisted evil bastards apparently who, if what goes around comes around is true, deserve lots of prison time and long, hot private shower time with well endowed inmates who enjoy breaking in the newbies. Bend over, boys.

I have to go and spoil my dogs with some meat and 'taters treats now and see if I can get this story out of my head so I can have a decent night's sleep.

That wasn’t the point of my mentioning the earlier thread. I just wanted to direct everyone’s attention to the original story and the comments posted there. That’s all. I don’t mind seeing threads reposted when they are hours apart, just for convenience sake.

"a man kills my dog, cop or not...well, prudence dictates I keep my mouth shut on a public forum about what my reaction would be."

I'm with you - there'd be retribution.
Even cops have to sleep some time.

You’re bound to be aware that the search doesn’t turn up what it should quite a lot. Or maybe you get lucky every time.

>Morgana...just noticed in the photo that the dogs have muzzles.<

DC, those are Halti headcollars, AKA Gentle Leaders. People use them to keep their bigger dogs from pulling so much. They’re specifically NOT for use on aggressive dogs.

No problem. I can’t get the title search function to work right either. I just wanted to direct everyone to the other comments on the other thread since I do not want to see these thugs get off for this.

Those are not muzzles.

http://www.cooldogtoys.com/dogleaderharne.php

“The Gentle Leader® Headcollar quickly controls dog jumping, pulling, barking, chewing and begging. It even teaches sit and stay in one easy lesson!

Also better than a harness.

Why and How the Gentle Leader® Headcollar Works
First of all, the Gentle Leader® Headcollar is NOT a muzzle. When fitted properly, Zoomyour dog is free to open his mouth to eat, drink, pant, fetch, bark and even bite - except when you close his mouth by pulling on the leash.”

Not to worry. The cops will not face any disciplinary action. Janet Reno approved this operation.

Those are NOT muzzles.

They are called "Gentle Leaders". They are head collars, like a horse's halter.

I have Labs and have worked with a lot of them, those boys had Gentle Leaders on because they pulled against a regular flat collar. People who don't want to use a choke or prong collar buy them -

Just more evidence that these are gentle people with gentle dogs. Those are English type (show type) Labs and the only quieter dogs I know are show type Goldens. My Labs are the field type which are rowdier and might run to a stranger to jump up and kiss him, but they don't have a mean bone in their bodies. I've known some dog-aggressive Labs but never a people-aggressive one. Such a dog would be a complete anomaly.

If these out-of-control Hollywood wannabes had killed my girls, I would not rest until their badges were in my sock drawer.

is their some unwritten rule here on FR that a relative noob like myself does not know about regarding duplicates? what is the big deal? I understand FReepers pointing out other dupe type threads on the same subject that we can look over for additional comments to read and such, nothing wrong there at all but some make it out to be some grave error of FR etiquette to put up the same story, even days apart. do they think everyone spends 24 hours a day on FR as to not miss a story? I don’t have the time either to scroll back the days stories either. help me out here capt. what is their problem or am I missing something?

Simple solution, the raid commander should lose his LEO credentials.

Wow! Aren't you the vicious one!

If it were up to me people like this would be swinging from trees. These are the folks who arrogate the right to arms for themselves only.

Y'all beat me to it on the Gentle Leaders.

I paused to vent. This makes me MAD! Killing family pets and they didn't even have a no-knock.

Too many police think they are military engaging the enemy. They need to be re-educated with hefty damages, firings, and loss of pensions.

Thank you very much for that info.

Always found black labs to be gentle..so it shocked me to see them with something over their face like that.

I’m a cat person...by default. ;^)
