AP's approach: 'Better to get it right even if we couldn't get it first'
WASHINGTON - Reporters don't like being beaten on a major political story, especially by a supermarket tabloid. And being beaten up over not reporting one is even less appealing.
But a sexual affair can have just two people who know the truth. Without witnesses, documents, photographs or some form of irrefutable evidence pointing to the truth, news organizations will not endanger their own integrity.
That made it difficult to prove and to print the rumors that John Edwards had cheated on his seriously ill wife while running for president. Reporters were left to poke around the edges of a potentially career-ending scandal in search of an opening.
"It's not like they didn't know it was there," said Mark Feldstein, a former investigative reporter who teaches journalism at George Washington University.
"Proof is the biggest issue," Feldstein said. "The National Enquirer is not well-regarded as a news source by the news media."....

OMG! LOL ROFL and all the rest...
Did they actually write that with a straight face.
As if they'd never fake documents....
And that’s why the MSM didn’t report those rumors about John McCain either ... oh, wait
If this hadn’t been all over the internet, they never would have said anything.
Yep. like they were so careful with the McCain affair claim in the NYTimes.
But it was really easy for them to try to disprove the story.
One has to be brain dead, i.e. a democrat, to not see the political bias of the media.
this is just playing to their peers and themselves.
self justification. we’re so honest, we have so much integrity.../s
Like proof from Kinkos?
Lets just see if they will do the foot work on the new information NE is following.
The money trail, 3 million digs for the woman and the guy who is claiming to be the father also admitting to receiving large sums of money.
BS, All they have to do is ask the perp in person and film the answer(s).
“Without witnesses, documents, photographs or some form of irrefutable evidence pointing to the truth, news organizations will not endanger their own integrity.”
I’d like to know what ‘news organizations’ this statement is referring to. ABC, CNN, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, NBC, the NYT, the LAT, AP, Reuters, Time, Newsweek, etc. have not endangered their integrity; they prostituted it.
Please..someone make the list of repubs in the last 20 years that have been assaulted by the drive-by media. Some were guilty, some were innocent. ALL were hounded and accused by the msm.
PMSNBC and the MSMs:
“Spin spin spin spin
Spin spin spin spin
Wonderful Spin, Mahvelous Spin...”
Who was feeding this story to the press to start with? Who put the woman up in hotels? John McCain wouldn't consider Edwards for a VP slot - and the "press" refused to look at a rape charge against Clinton - much worse than a one night stand. So who pushed this story? Who whispered rumors and passed out the hints? And why?
With Republicans it’s the seriousness of the charge!
Yeah, sure you turd polishers. Your buddies at the New York Times certainly ran the flimsy McCain affair with Vicki Iseman story.
The MSM of today waits for press releases - that is their idea of investigating a story.
